Application filed July 9, 1885. Serial No. 171,112. (No model.)
Be it known that I, JAMES F. WVALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 00- lumbus, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gearing, and the object of my invention is to provide a series of gearing adapted to change a continuous rotary motion into an alternating revolving or oscillating motion, the gearing being particularly adapted for washingmachines, or churns, or for other purposes wherein it is desirable to impart to a revolving shaft an intermittent motion in opposite directions.
My invention consists in the constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is avertical sectional elevation view of my gearing shown applied to a washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the pawl'andratchet mechanism, one of the pawls being shown in dotted lines to show the relative position of the pawls when in operation. Fig. 3 is an elevation view of one of the driving-gears, showing the alternating clutch mechanism.

A represents awashingmachine; B, the dash or agitator, and U the crank by which motion is imparted. The crank G is secured on the end of a horizontal shaft, a, supported in suitable bearings, b b. J ournaled loosely on the shaft a, are two beveled driving-gears, c 0, adapted to engage on opposite sides of a beveled pinion, d, which is secured on the upper end of a vertical shaft, d. The shaft d carries the dash or agitator B. The drivingbacks thereof with ratchets e 0, preferably cast solid therewith.
Secured rigidly to theshaft a, on the outside of the respective driving-gears 0 c, are pawlcases f f, adapted to extend over and inclose the ratchets e e. on the respective gears. These pawl-cases are respectively provided with pawls h h, adapted to alternately engage the respective ratchets, the said pawls being placed diametrically opposite each other in the respective cases. The pawls h h are provided with curved extensions k h which are adapted to come into contact with circular tracks or ways Z Z on the respective bearings b b. When either of the curved extensions if h is in contact with its track Z Z, the pawl is held away from the ratchet. When the curved extension has passed the said track, the pawl is thrown into engagement with its ratchet by a spring, a. The tracks Z Z are made sufficiently long to hold the respective pawls away from their ratchets for about one half a revolution of the shaft 0.. The pawls being placed diametrically opposite each other, said pawls are alternately disengaged from the ratchets during about one-half of a revolution, one pawl being engaged while the other is disengaged, so that during one half a revolution the driving-gear c is engaged and turns with the shaft while the other driving-gear is loose on the shaft, and during the other half of the revolution the driving-gear c is engaged, the other driving-gear, 0, being loose. One of the gears thus drives the pinion (1 during a portion of the revolution, and the other gear during the other portion. of the revolution. The respective gears engaging the pinion on opposite sides thereof will revolve the said pinion in opposite directions.
Each revolution of the shaft a will thus revolve the pinion, first in one direction and then in the other, so that a continuous rotary motion of the crank 0 imparts an alternating revolving or oscillating motion of the dash or agitator B.
I have described the gearing as applied to a washing-machine or churn; but it is obvious that it may be applied to other purposes, and admits of various modifications without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a driving-shaft, of two driving-gears journaled loosely thereon, the said gears being respectively adapted, by a forward motion thereof, to revolve a driven shaft in opposite directions, and clutch mechanism for alternately connecting and disconnecting the said gears by a continuous revolution of the driving-shaft, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a revolving shaft, of two beveled driving-gears journaled loosely thereon and adapted to engage on opposite sides'iof Ialbeveledfpinion, a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism for each of said driving-gears adapted, when engaged, to connectIEthe said gears to the revolving shaft, and means for alternately withdrawing the said pawls, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the revolving shaft, of two beveled driving-gears journaled loosely thereon and adapted to engage on opposite sides of a beveled pinion, each of said gears being provided on the back with a ratchet, a pawl case for each of said gears secured rigidly to the shaft and provided with a pawl adapted to engage with the ratchet on the driving-gear, and tracks or ways adapted to alternately withdraw said pawls, substan- In testimony whereof I have hereunto-set 25 my hand this 20th day of June, A.
