SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,054, dated October 2 7, 1885. Application filed January 21,1885. Serial No. 153,569. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH KRAUSE, of Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchants Registering-Tags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in merchants registering-tags. V

The desirability of ascertaining from time to time the number of yards of cloth sold and remaining unsold without expending the time and labor required in unrolling the cloth and measuring has created a demand for some device bywhich the required knowledge may be obtained with the least possible outlay of labor or waste of time.

The object of my present invention is to provide a tag which shall show in a plain and concise form the information desired,and which will furnish an easy and rapid means of recording the number of yards sold in several sales from the same piece; and with these ends in view my invention consists in a tag containing a series of blanks indexed Style, Case No., Yds. in Piece, Yds. Sold, Yds. Remg, respectively, and further containing a schedule of figures representing whole and fractional numbers for indicating the number of yards sold by the successive sales of a part of a roll.

My invention further consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

The accompanying drawing represents one form of the tag suitable for ordinary purposes.

A represents a rectangular piece of cardboard about three inches long and two inches wide. The shape and size of the card are not necessarily limited to any particular form or dimensions, but are mentioned as showing a convenient form and size for ordinary use. Near the upper left-hand corner of the tag are the words and letters Style and Case No., to the right hand of which are blank lines left for the record of the particular style a sufficient number of the figures to represent,

when their values are taken collectively, a number of yards equal to'or greater than the number which a piece of cloth contains.

WVhenever any given number of yards is sold, the salesman cancels, either with a pen, pencil, or some suitable punch, as may be found most desirable, the figures and fractions representing the number of yards sold. This number,when deducted from the number of yards in the piece as represented on the tag, will ofcourse give the number of yards remaining unsold, which may be placed in its appropriate position. This process repeated as often as any portion of the piece is sold will present to the eye the required information, whenever such information is desired, without the trouble of unrolling and measuring.

It is important that the figures and fractions on the card should be plainly printed, as this will enable the deductions to be more quickly and correctly made; but it is not absolutely necessary that they should be arranged in the form shown in the drawings, as other arrangements might be resorted to without materially injuring its effectiveness, and other symbols representing numbers might be used in the place of the figures shown; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the form and arrangement of parts shown and described, but reserve the privilege of making such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, a merchants registering-tag consisting of a strip or sheet of paper or paper-board having spaces indicated thereon for recording the number of yards sold and number of yards remaining in the piece, and figures and fractions thereof adapted to be canceled or otherwise checked 5 to indicate the number of yards sold at one or more sales, substantially as set forth.
