J. L. KIRBY.
CLOTHES WRINGBR.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO JAMES LEONARD KIRBY, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE COLBY WRINGER COMPANY OF HIGHLANDVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,051, dated October 27, 1885.
Application tiled July 7, 1884. Serial No. 137,001.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LEONARD KIRBY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes- Wringers; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a transverse and'median seclion, of a wringer containing my invention, the nature of which is dened in the claim hereinafter presented. Fig. 4 is an end view of the actuator. Fig. 5 is an inner side elevation of one of the jawed levers. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the wringer, taken through the axes of its squeeze-rollers.
My invention relates to the class of clotheswringers of which that shown and described in the United States Patent No. 158,369, dated January 5, 1875, is a representation.
In my present wringer I have each of the two end portions A of the frame provided with a stationary extension or jaw, a, projecting down from it, as represented, and in rear of such jaw I have within and fulcrumed to the said portion A a jawed lever, B, the fulcrum being a cylindrical pivot or stud, b, extending from the part A.
Between the two end portions Ais the pivoted actuator C, which is an arched shelf having projecting from each end of it a journal, c, that goes through and 'takes a bearing in a cylindrical hole, d, in the portion A. The journal extends a short distance beyond the portion A, a pin, e, going diametrically through the extension, and serving with the actuator to aid in holding lin connection the portions A A. On each of the journals c is a cam, f, to bear against the upper arm of the next adjacent jawed lever B. To keep the said lever in place on its fulcrum, there projects downward from the actuator a lip, 45 g, and also upward from such actuator another lip, h, from which it will be seen that the actuator is furnished at each end of it with two such lips, g and h. Vere it not for the said lips the lever would be liable to 5o drop off its fulcrum during the movements of (No model.)
the actuator. The lips keep the lever in place and save the necessity of any other device for suchpurpose.
The two squeeze-rollers of the wringer are shown at D and E. the shaft t' of the lower one, 55 E, being journaled in the frame portions A, and provided with a crank, F.
The journals k of the upper squeeze-roller turn in movable boxes Z, placed underneath two cylindrical rubber springs, m, arranged in niches n, in the said end portions, A. From each box l a spindle, o, projects upward through the spring and into the tubular shank of a screw, n', that goes through the crown of the niche and screws into and through a connection-bar, G, and against a washer, p, on the top of the spring. The screws and bar serve to connect the two portions A, the screws answering also to contract the springs in order to force the upper down toward the lower of 7o the squeeze-rollers.
On turning the actuator from an upright down into a horizontal position its cams will so operate the jawed levers as to force their jaws toward the stationary jaws of the two portions A.
From the above it will be seen that on the wringer being placed in the usual way upon a tub, with the upper part of such tub extending between the stationary and theV movable 8o jaws, such wringer may be clamped to the tub by turning the actuator down into a horizontal vposition or thereabout. When the actuator is in such position, the clothes as they pass from the rollers will be received 8 5 upon it, and by it will be prevented from falling into the tub.
I do not claim the combination of an actuator, two sets of jawed levers, two springs, and roller-supporting levers, all arranged on a piv- 9o otal shaft and appliedto two squeeze-rollers, substantially as specified and represented in the aforesaid United States Patent No. 158,369, as I have in the wringer hereinbefore described but one set of jawed levers, and with them have to the actuator certain lips to hold them in place on their fulcrums; therefore The combination of the actuator having lips extending both upward and downward from roo it at its ends, and also having a cam to each jawed levers having their upper arms against of its journals, as described, with the end porthe-periphery of the cams, and allbeng subtions of the frame provided with stationary stantially and to operate as set forth.
jaws and fulora, as represented, and with JAMES LEONARD KIRBY. 5 jawed levers supported on such fulcra and Witnesses:
arranged in rear of the stationary jaws and VR, H. EDDY,
between the said end portions and lips, such E. B. PRATT.
