SPESIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,033, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed April 3, 1885. Serial No. 161 143. (No model.)
-To all whom it may concern:
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the machine described in United States Patent N 0. 304,517, heretofore granted to us, and
especially as to the construction and mode of operation of the dogs which engage the corners and other parts of the vamp or upper being crimped. Herein we have provided de-' vices for positively actuating the said dogs at the proper time to thus insure their greater efficiency; and we have also improved the construction of the corner guide, whereby, instead of operating it by hand, it is actuated automatically.
Our invention 'consists, essentially, in a form-plate provided with slides or blocks, and an auxiliary jaw provided with cam-slots and arms to support the said jaw, the said auxiliary jaw having co-operating with it a main j aw provided with levers, the said levers actuating the leg and foot dogs to grasp the upper or vamp between the dogs and the said blocks or slides, to operate substantially as will be described; also, in a form-plate cut away and provided with a slide or block having a pivoted catch to hold the slide or block in place, substantially as will be described; also, in a form-plate provided with a block or slide, two arms, two auxiliary jaws pivoted thereon and provided each with a cam-slot, and two main jaws having attached levers and slides moved thereby, having mounted upon them corner-engaging dogs, to operate substantially as will be described; also, in auxiliary jaws provided with notches or projections and with hooks, and the main jaw provided with pivoted catches, combined with form-plates and pins or projections to release the said catches, and by pressure against them insure the descent of the main jaw within the auxiliary jaw, Substantially as will be described.
inafter pointed out, and specifically designated inthe claims at the end of this Specification.
Figure 1 in front elevation represents a machine embodying our present improvements. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical central section of Fig. l in the line 00 0c, the arm carrying the crimping-jaw at the front of the machine being in section in the line or w, the main and auxiliary jaw atfthe front of the machine being left in elevation, the parts outside the front jaw being also in elevation. Fig. 3 is a partial elevation of the right-hanol end of Fig. 1; Fig. 4., two views of the clamping-plate removed; .Fig. 5, a partial cross-section of Fig. l in the lines 00' x 00 :0 one jaw and its cal rying-arm being in section and the other in plan View; Fig. 6, an inner side View of the.
auxiliary jaw; Fig. 7, an inner side view the rear jaw placedin working position against the auxiliary jaw, the said figure showing thc dogs to engage the corners and the foot and leg of the vamp or upper, and the clampingplate, the main jaw by full and dot-ted lines being shown in two positions, the full-line position being that when the jaws, having 'engaged the upper on the form-plate, commence to crimp the boot or shoe. Fig. 8 is an inner side view of the main jaw alone; Fig. 9, a left-' hand end view of Fig. 8; Fig. 10, a vletail of the leg-engagingdog; Fig. 11, the corner-engaging dog detached; Fig. 12, a detail showing the latch which holds the main jaw in its full-line or normal position, Fig. 7; Fig. 13, a detail on a larger scale of one of the slideblocks and part of the form-plate.
The main frame-work A,in usual or suitable boxes, (not shown,) sustains the main shaft A and the shaft A with chain-wheels A A, over which are passed the chains A A The chains A A have single and double links, and the holders A for the form-plates A are secured to the single links by screws or bolts, as at 2.
The form-plates, preferably of sheet-stee1, shaped substantially as shown, are attached at their ends to the form-holders A, and each form-plate is provided with three recesses, in
These shafts are provided which are placed loosely the slides or blocks 7 a a a composed each of two pieces (see Fig. 13) united by screws a each of the said slides Other features of our invention will be hereor blocks having pivoted upon it near one edge a suitable weighted or other pawl, a, which engages teeth out into the edge of the formplate next to I each slide or block, the said catches retaining the slides or blocks from moving back toward the instep part 30f the form-plate until after the latter has descended below the jaws, to be described, the said slides or blocks, aside from the catches, being substantially the same as shown in'the patent referred to. The form-plates are provided each with two actuating pins or projections, a a one at each end of the form-plate, and proj ecting from each side of'the same, the said pins or projections in'the movement of the formplates striking the catches of, pivoted upon the main jaws B, as shown in Figs. 1,2, 7,8, and 9, the hooked ends of the said catches (see Fig.
"7, full lines) normally engaging notches a (shown by full lines, Fig. 6) in the auxiliary jaw Bwhen the main jaw B is in its normal or elevated position, as' in full lines,'Fig. 7. Each auxiliary jaw B is bolted by bolts b upon an arm, G, pivoted at O, the said arms at their outer ends,at each'side of the frame A,receiving through them bolts 0 about which, after passing through the said arms, are placed springs 0 the nuts 0" being thereafter applied, the springs permitting the arms and their attached j aws to separate to adapt themselves to the thickness of the leather on the form-plates.
The screws 19 are extended loosely through holes made in the arms 0 and through bosses located at the middle of the length of the said ner-dog,is provided with aprojectiomcflwhich,
arms, (see Fig. 5,) where the outer arm, 0,-is shown in plan, theinner ends of the said screws 1) b entering the auxiliary jaws B, thus supporting them so that they may rock as on vertical pivots, as in other machines shown in patents granted to J. W. D. Fifield.
Each auxiliary jaw, one of whichis shown separately in Fig. 6, has ears'b bat its lower end, to support the main jaw B in its lowest position, as in dotted lines, Fig. 7, and also cam-slots b b bf and bridges b 12 between openings made into the said auxiliary jaw,
foam-pits 12 b and the projection 12 cast integ'ral with the said jaw, has forming part of it a tubular guide, I).
The upper end of the auxiliary jaw 'B is grooved to receive the lower serrated member of the corner-guide c,and' at its rear side each auxiliary jaw has bolted to it by like bolts, 6,
'(seeFig. 5,) hooks 11 11 the latter extending outward about the rear sides of the catches a when the hooked ends of the latter are in engagem'ent with the notches a of the auxiliary jaws, as in Fig. 7, the catches being normally descent, by acting upon the short arms of the catches, compel the main jaws B to descend in unison with the form-plates; but as soon as the upper ends of the said catches pass below the lower ends of the hooks b I) the catches turn on their pivot-pins and the pins or projections a a pass below the catches, leaving the main jaw at rest.
Each main jaw B has pivoted upon it at 8 an elbow-lever, d, at 9 an elbow-lever, d, and at 10 an elbow-lever, 01*, each lever at its lower end having a roller or other stud, the roller stud of lever d entering the cam-slot 12 that of leverd the cam-slot b, and that oflever al the cam-slot b.
The leverd at one end engages a notch in a slide, 6, placed in a groove in the back of the main jaw B,' and provided at its upper end with the corrugated or serrated corner-dog e, the said slide 0 being moved longitudinally by the elbow-lever d as the main jaw is caused to descend, the dog 6 during such movement being in contact with the material of the upper or vamp at its corner'12. (See Fig. 1, where the said corner is, however, shown as having passed below the jaws.) The inner side of the corner 12, while the corner-dog e is in engagement with it, is supported by the block a, and as the form-plate descends the block a slides in it in the direction of the arrow thereon, Fig. 1, the said block and corner-dog grasping the leather at the corner 12, stretching the said corner.
The slide 0 at its rear side, opposite the corwhen the jaw B is elevated, as in full lines,
Fig. 7, enters the notch 14, and as the jaw B l is depressed, as stated, the projection e rides up out of the said depression upon the cambridge I), and travels and rests on the said bridge so long as it is desired to stretch the.
said" corners, or while the other dogs to be described act, after which the said projection drops from the bridge into the depression 15. The lever d has pivoted upon it at d a legstretching dog, d which enters a hole, d in the clamping-plate f. (Shown separately in i Fig. 4 and in planin Fig. 7.) The leverd has pivoted upon it in like manner a foot-stretching dog, d, extended through a notch, d, in the said clamping-plate.
The leg and foot of the upper at its edge each side of the corner and at each side of the form-plate is supported opposite the leg and foot stretching dogs d (i referred. to, by the slides or blocks a a respectively, and as the be moved diagonally away from the corner 12,
the said dogs co-operating with the blocks or slides a a from the instep part of the form and in the direction of the movement of the said blocks or slides in the said form-plate.
The dogs (2" d at their rear sides have each a like projection, 20, atits side next the auxiliary jaw 13, the said projection, when the main jaw is elevated, enteringrecesses l6, and as the jaw B descends the said projections pass out from the said recesses and ride upon the bridges b, where they remain as long as it is desired to stretch the upper orvamp, the projections 20 thereafter dropping into the recesses 17 17 The clamping-plate f, onein each main jaw, has feet 18, (see Fig. 4,) that rest upon a portion of the main jaw and between it and the auxiliary jaw, as shown in Fig. 2, and at their rear sides, near their upper ends, each clamping-plate f has twolugs, 19, provided each with a roller, 22, each roller entering a pit, I)", (see Fig. 6,) in the auxiliary jaw, the said pits at their ends being inclined or camshaped.
While the main jaw is elevated, as in full lines, Figs. 2 and 7, the rolls 22 act on the inner face of the auxiliary jaw just above the pits I)", thus keeping the face of each clampingplate flush with the inner face of the main jaw; but as the main jaw is forced down, as described, the said rolls enter the pits I), thus permitting the clamping-plates to relieve the leather from pressure, while the dogs referred to and slides or blocks act to stretch the leather; but just before the mainv jaw reaches its lowest position the rolls 22 ride out of the pit b and the clamping-plates are again returned to their flush position.
The slot b receives through it the pin or stud 23, screwed into the back of the main jaw, and provided at its outer end at the back of the auxiliary jaw with a roll, 24, which latter rests on a lever, 25, pivoted at 26, and connected at its outer end (see Fig. 1) by a strap, 27, with a weight, 28, the strap being extended over a pulley, 29, there being one such lever for each jaw.
As the main jaws are depressed as described, the roll 24, acting on the lever 25, depresses it and lifts the weight, and as the form-plate and the vamp or upper thereon pass from between the lower end of the jaws the said lever 25, acted upon by the weight, rises and lifts the main jaw into its full-line or normal position.
The movable parts 0 of the corner-guides, serrated at their under sides to co-operate with the serrated portions 0, attached to the auxiliary jaw, have shanks 0 extended down through the guide-tubes 0 the lower ends of the said shanks being joined by a collar and pins 0* with a lever, 0 secured to a rockshaft, 0", weighted at c, the said lever having a socket-piece slotted at its side walls for the reception of the pins 0.
The rock-shaft '0 has an arm, 0 connected with it and extended downward, the said arm having a roller or other stud, 28, which is acted upon by the cam projections 29 30 of a disk, It, secured to the shaft A, the said cams in their rotation acting in succession on the roll 28, and moving the lever 0 the rockshaft, and the lever 0 so that the latter raises the separate.
shanks of the movable members 0' of the corner-guides, thus lifting them to permit the operator to place the vamp or upper in position at the top of the jaws preparatory to the descent of the form-plate upon the upper, the said cams 29 30, as they pass the roll28, permitting the movable member 0 of the corner guides to drop and hold the upper while the form-plate acts upon and forces the same through between the jaws, the form-plate gradually drawing the upper from between the corner-guides. 1
Each shank c'flnear its lower end, has a roller or other stud, 32, which stands in a somewhat spiral slot, 33, the said stud and slot effecting a partial rotation of the shank and its attached part c as the shank is raised, thus turning the part c aside, as in dotted lines, Fig. 5, thus uncovering the grooved parts a, to enable the operator to apply the upper.
The arms 0 O are permitted by the springs C on the bolts 0 to separate to accommodate thejaws to the thickness of the upper as the form-plate enters between the opposite jaws,
.and thereafter it is frequently desirable to lock the bolts 0", so that the jaws cannot further To do this we have slotted each bolt 0 and the arm (3, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and have placed in the said slots a lockingbar, h, provided at each end with a wedge, the said bar having connected with it a handlever, h pivoted at h, the said lever being moved whenever it is desired to lock the said bolts and the arms and jaws in position.
