A. F. BUCHANAN.
BRACKET FOR HAND GRENADBS.
Patented Oct. 20, 1885.
INVENTOR flzexaflier WITNESSES:
dzfmh/ z ATTORNEYS N. PETERS. Pho
UNITED STATES ATENI tries,
ALEXANDER F. BUCHANAN, OF MONTROSE, NEWV YORK.
BRACKET FOR HAN D-G RENADES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,874, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed May 14, 1885. Serial No. 165,518. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER F. BU- OHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mont-rose, in the county of Westchester and of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Hand-Grenades, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for supporting hand-grenades; and it consists in the combinationbf a bracket, two arms attached thereto for clasping and supporting the bottle, and a hammer pivotally connected with the bracket for breaking the bottle, and also in the combination of a bracket, bifurcated arms attached thereto for supporting the bottle, a hammerhinged to the bracket for breaking the bottle, a stop on the bracket, and a cord for holding the hammer in its raised position, all of which is more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved bracket for supporting hand-grenades. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters indicate correspon ding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the bracket, which can be secured in any suitable place in a building for instance, to the walls or fioor-beams-by screws or other common means, and to this bracket are attached, at a a, two bifurcated arms, B B, which are adapted to receive and retain the interposed hand grenade or bottle 0, .containing the fireextinguishing fluid, said arms being made of a material possessing some elasticity, so that the bottle when introduced between the arms will be securely held.
In order to facilitate the removal of the bottle when so desired, I allow some space between the bottom of the bottle and the bracket, so that the bottle can be raised subsequent to its removal, which bringsa smaller radius within the sweep of the ends of the bifurcated portion of the arms? To accomplish the breaking of the bottle in case of fire breaking out in proximity to the same, I hinge a hammer, D, to the bracket at b, and in the example shown in the drawings it is hinged in such a position that when it falls it will strike the neck 0 of the bottle and break the same; but the hammer can be so located or its arm d can be shortened so that it will impinge upon the bottle at some point on the body of the latter-for instance, between the bifurcated portion of the arm 13- and shatter the bottle, whereby its contents will escape at once; but when the neck only is broken off the contents will gradually flow out and probably prove more effectual 1n extinguishing the fiames.
To hold the hammer in its raised positlon, Fig. 1, I employ some such means as a cord, E, which is attached to. the upper portion of the arm of the hammer, holding the hammer against a suitable stop, F, on the bracket, which latter prevents the hammer from falling backward from its raised position, as such an occurrence would entirely incapacitate the device. The cord E is made of the usual material from which cords are made, and is therefore easily consumed or parted by the flames. When the latter occurs, the hammer will be released and violently strike the bottle, as before described, and its contents will will be liberated.
The object of my invention is to prevent the occurrence of serious conflagrations, es pecially at night, or in unfrequented roomssuch as drying-rooms and the likeby subduing the flames before they can spread to any great extent, and this is accomplished by distributing in various parts of the building a number of these brackets with handgrenades or other bottles containing a' chemical fire-extinguishing fluid suspended therefrom, as described, the hammer of each bracket being held in a raised position by a cord of some material which will be readily consumed, so that the contents of the bottle will be liberated in case of fire.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of a bracket, A, two arms arranged opposite to each other on the bracket to clasp and support a bottle between. them,
and a bottle-breaking hammer pivotally. con- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set nected with the bracket. my hand and seal in the presence of two sub- IO 2. The combination of the bracket A, the scribing Witnesses. bifurcated arms attached thereto for support Y T 5 ing the bottle, the hammer pivoted to the ALEXANDER BUCI-IMM' SJ bracket, the stop on the bracket, and the cord Witnesses: for holding the hammer, substantially as and THEODORE NEWELL, for the purpose set forth. W. HAUFF.
