DOVETAIL FURNITURE Filed oct. 13, 1964 United States Patent O 3,287,078 DOVETAIL FURNITURE William Lew, 27 Pine Drive N., Roslyn, N.Y. 'Filed Oct. 13, 1964, Ser. No. 403,536 2 Claims. (Cl. 312-263) This invention relates to novel construction in the eld of dovetail furniture.
It is an object of this invention to provide improved dovetail furniture.
It is another object to provide dovetail furniture wherein the dovetail construction is not apparent to the eye.
These and other objects of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following descriptive disclosure of an embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a two drawer cabinet,
FIG. 2 is a front View of one of two frame pieces used to hold the sliding drawers,
FIG. 3 is an inside view of one of the two side walls of the cabinet showing the channeled dovetail construction and showing the horizontally disposed dovetail channels terminating short of the front edge of the side panels,
FIG. 4 is a section View taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1 and showing the manner of securing the top wall, and
FIG. 5 is a top view of the cabinet with the top wall removed and taken on line 5 5 of FIG. 1.
Turning to the drawing, the cabinet is prepared from two specially grooved substantialy identical side panels (FIG. 3) and 10X (FIG. 4), having a front edge 11, a back edge 12, a top edge 13 and a bottom edge 14.
A pair of parallel disposed dovetail channels 15 and 16 are disposed vertically in the inside surface wall from top edge 13 to bottom edge 14.
A pair of horizontally disposed dovetailed channels 17 and 18 both terminate in the front dovetail channel 15 and inboth panels 10 and 10X.
A bottom wall 20 (FIG. 4) is provided on its opposed side edges with dovetail rails 21 of length equal to dovetail channels 18 so that a length of dovetail rail equal to length 22 between front edge 11 and channel 15 is deleted to make rails 21.
Thus front edge 24 of the bottom wall 20 is smooth faced and disposed between panels 10 and 10X without any sign of dovetail construction.
The bottom surface of the bottom wall 20 is provided with conventional legs 25 secured by conventional means such as screws, etc.
A pair of identical side support bars (FIG. 5) of suitable length are provided on one longitudinal edge with a dovetail rail 31 and are each slid into the dovetail channels 17 of a respective side wall 10 and 10X suitably between `channels 15 and 16.
A pair of `front and back frames 50 (FIG. 2) of identical construction are prepared from vertically disposed edge members 51 each having a dovetail rail 52 at the outer edge and three horizontally disposed cross members 53, 54 and 55 secured to the edge members 51, by conventional means such as dowels, nails, special fasteners, and the like.
The horizontal length of the frame 50 is such that the rails 52 slide into the channels 16 of the opposing side walls 10 and 10X with the bottom edge of member 53 engaging the top surface of the bottom wall 20 and the top edge of member 53 engaging the top wall 56.
Brace pieces 57 are secured by conventional means such as nails intermediate the edge members 53, 54 and 55. The cross members 53 support a lower drawer 58 of conventional rectangular box construction and the cross members 54 supports a like drawer 59.
Preferably the front panels of the drawers (FIG. 5) are ice made ush with the edge 11 of the side panels 10 and 10X.
Also the top wall 56 preferably overlaps the side walls 10 and 10X (FIG. 4) and even the front edges 11, if desired.
The back of cabinet is preferably provided with a backing plate (not shown) if desired and secured by conventional means to the back frame 50.
In assembling the cabinet of this invention, the bottom wall 20 with the legs 25 attached is pushed into the side walls 10 and 10X with rails 21 engaging channels 18.
Next, the support members 30 are slid into place, then the two frames 50 are slid downwardly with their rails 52 sliding into the respective grooves 15 and 16 of the side walls.
Then the cross bars 57 are secured in place between the frames 50 and the top wall 56 is then secured in place by a plurality of suitably located screws 60 disposed through supports 30.
Lastly the prepared boX drawers are slid onto the frame pieces 53 and 54.
Preferably, the drawers 58 and 59 are provided with front panels 59X which are provided with a pair of dovetail channels so as to terminate short of the top exposed edge of the front panel. Also the side walls 59Y of the drawers are provided with shortened rails 59Z to mate into said short channels of the panels.
This invention has been described by means of an illustration and thus is not to be limited to this illustration.
I claim:
1. A substantially rectangular cabinet of dovetail construction comprising a pair of identical side walls of face to face relationship, each having an edge to edge pair of vertical parallel disposed dovetail channels suitably adjacent the front and suitably adjacent the back edge of said wall and further each having a pair of horizontal parallel disposed ldovetail channels suitably adjacent the top and suitably adjacent to the bottom edges of said wall, said horizontal channels each running from the back edge of the wall and terminating in the front dovetail channel, thereby forming a continuous square intercommunicating system of dovetail channels engaging the top, back and bottom edges at two points adapted to slidably receive structural members; a bottom wall structural rectangular member having a pair of opposed dovetail rails disposed in the dovetail channels of said face to face side walls; a pair of front and back rectangular drawer-apertured drawer supporting planar frame members having opposed vertically disposed dovetail rails, each frame member respectively lockingly disposed in the vertical dovetail front and rear channels of said walls; a pair of suitably long support bars each having a single longitudinal dovetail rail disposed in a respective top dovetail channel of a side wall intermediate said front and back frame members, a top wall `disposed on the top edges of said side walls, said frames and said support bars, and means for securing said top wall to said support bars.
2. The cabinet of claim 1 wherein the front frame is suitably removed from the front edges of said side walls thereby permitting the front panels of said drawers to be disposed in planar relationship to the front edges of said bottom and said side walls.

Claims (1)

1. A SUBSTANTIALLY RECTANGULAR CABINET OF DOVETIAL CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING A PAIR OF IDENTICAL SIDE WALLS OF FACE TO FACE RELATIONSHIP, EACH HAVING AN EDGE TO EDGE PAIR OF VERTICAL PARALLEL DISPOSED DOVETAIL CHANNELS SUITABLE ADJACENT THE FRONT AND SUITABLY ADJACENT THE BACK EDGE OF SAID WALL AND FURTHER EACH HAVING A PAIR OF HORIZONTAL PARALLEL DISPOSED DOVETAIL CHANNELS SUITABLY ADJACENT THE TOP AND SUITABLY ADJACENT TO THE BOTTOM EDGES OF SAID WALL, SAID HORIZONTAL CHANNELS EACH RUNNING FROM THE BACK EDGE OF THE WALL AND TERMINATING IN THE FRONT DOVETAIL CHANNEL, THEREBY FORMING A CONTINUOUS SQUARE INTERCOMMUNICATING SYSTEM OF DOVETAIL CHANNELS ENGAGING THE TOP, BACK AND BOTTOM EDGES AT TWO POINTS ADAPTED TO SLIDABLY RECEIVE STRUCTURAL MEMBERS; A BOTTOM WALL STRUCTURAL RECTANGULAR MEMBER HAVING A PAIR OF OPPOSED DOVETAIL RAILS DISPOSED IN THE DOVETAIL CHANNELS OF SAID FACE TO FACE SIDE WALLS; A PAIR OF FRONT AND BACK RECTANGULAR DRAWER-APERTURED DRAWER SUPPORTING POLANAR FRAME MEMBERS HAVING OPPOSED VERTICALLY DISPOSED DOVETAIL RAILS, EACH FRAME MEMBER RESPECTIVERLY LOCKINGLY DISPOSED IN THE VERTICAL DOVETAIL FRONT AND REAR CHANNELS OF SAID WALLS; A PAIR OF SUITABLY LONG SUPPORT BARS EACH HAVING A SINGLE LONGITUDINAL DOVETAIL RAIL DISPOSED IN RESPECTIVE TOP DOVETAIL CHANNEL OF A SIDE WALL INTERMEDIATE SAID FRONT AND BACK FRAME MEMBERS, A TOP WALL DISPOSED ON THE TOP EDGES OF SAID SIDE WALLS, SAID FRAMES AND SAID SUPPORT BARS, AND MEANS FOR SECURING SAID TOP WALL TO SAID SUPPORT BARS.
