INVENTOR. JOJEPH T. yfllM/VOV/ifl M/KM United States Patent 3,286,828 CLOTH-BOARD REEL I Joseph T. Yovanovich, Rosemont, Pa., assignor to National Tube and Reel Corporation, Belleville, N.J., a corporation of New Jersey Filed Oct. 8, 1965, Ser. No. 494,071 8 Claims. (Cl. 206-50) This invention relates generally to reels, and is especially concerned with improvements in cloth-board reels, as for carrying cloth wound thereabout.
As is well known to those versed in the art, cloth has for years been conventionally wound on reels fabricated of wood. Relatively sturdy, heavy and expensive wooden reels were necessary to withstand the torsional and buckling stresses imparted during machine-winding of cloth on the reels. It has been proposed to fabricate cloth-board reels of less expensive construction and materials, as of paper stock and the like, but such attempts have not been entirely satisfactory. For example, prior cloth-board reels fabricated of paper stock in a manner to compete economically have not proved reliably staunch and sturdy under all conditions of use.
Accordingly, it is an important object of the present invention to provide a cloth-board reel adapted to be inexpensively fabricated of paper stock, or other suitable material, which is extremely staunch, durable and reliable under all conditions of use, to resist torsional and buckling stresses applied during machine-winding of cloth on the reels.
Other objects of the present invention will become apparent upon reading the following specification and referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a material part of this disclosure.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter-described, andof which the scope will 'be indicated by the appended claims.
In the drawings: 7 v
FIGURE 1 is a plan view showing a cloth-board reel constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention, and partly broken away for clarity of illustration;
FIGURE 2 is a transverse sectional view taken generally along the line 22 of FIGURE 1; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective end view showing a clothboard reel of the present invention in operative association with a coil of cloth.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, and specifically to FIGURE 3 thereof, a cloth board is there generally designated 10, and is of generally flat, substantially rectangular configuration, having wound thereabout a coil of fabric 11.
The cloth board is illustrated in greater detail in FIGURES 1 and 2, and may be substantially entirely fabricated of paper stock, such as thin cardboard or the like, including a generally rectangular, substantially flat intermediate panel or sheet 13 which may'have its opposite faces coated with adhesive, as at 14. Arranged in congruent overlying relation with the intermediate or central panel 13 is an upper stiffener sheet 15. The upper stiffener sheet 15 is of generally rectangular-outline configuration, generally equal in size to that of the intermediate sheet 13 and superposed on the upper face thereof. Formed in the upper stiffener sheet 15 are a series of parallel corrugations 16 extending diagonally entirely across the sheet. Specifically, the corrugations 16 extend obliquely approximately 45 degrees to the longitudinal direction of the stiffener sheet 15. As best seen in FIG- URE 2, the corrugations 16 of stifiener sheet 15 are of generally rectangular cross-sectional configuration, each 3,286,828 Patented Nov. 22, 1966 ice having a generally flat outer portion or crest 17 of generally rectangular configuration, and a generally fiat inner portion or trough 18, also of generally rectangular configuration. The crests 17 and troughs 18 are connected together by generally parallel side walls 19 extending between and generally normal to the crests and troughs.
It will therefore be apparent that the troughs or inner portions 18 of corrugations 16 have generally rectangular lower surfaces or areas in facing, adhesively secured engagement with the upper surface of intermediate sheet 13, as "by the upper adhesive layer 14.
A lower or under stiffener sheet 20 is of generally rectangular outline configuration, substantially congruent and arranged in facing relation with the underside of intermediate panel 13. The lower stiffener sheet 20 may also be of flexible paper stock or other suitable material, and is formed with parallel corrugations 21 extending diagonally across the sheet. The corrugations 21 extend obliquely approximately 45 degrees to the longitudinal direction of the stiffener sheet 20, and approximately degrees to the corrugations 16 of the upper stifiener sheet. In both the upper stiffener sheet 15 and lower stiffener sheet 20, the respective corrugations thereof occupy substantially the entire sheet. Further, the corrugations 21 of the 'lower stiffener sheet 20 are configured to be of generally rectangular cross section, thereby defining generally flat outer portions or crests spaced from the intermediate sheet 13, and generally flat inner portions or troughs 23 in adjacent facing relation with the intersecured in surface engagement with the underface of intermediate sheet 13 by the lower adhesive layer 14.
Circumposed about the adhesively secured assemblage 'of intermediate sheet 13 and upper and lower stiffener sheets 15 and 20, is a wrapper sheet 26. The wrapper sheet 26 may be of generally rectangular-outline configuration and circumposed about the intermediate and stiff- -ener sheets 13, Hand 20, having portions lying in facing engagement with the generally rectangular areas of crests 17 and 22. Further, the inner surface of wrapper sheet 26 may be coated with adhesive 27 serving to firmly secure the wrapper sheet to the rectangular surface areas of the corrugation crests 17 and 22. The wrapper sheet may be coextensive with the intermediate and stiffener sheets 13 and 15, longitudinally thereof, and may have overlapping edge portions 28 and 29 adhesively secured together to define a seam extending longitudinally between opposite ends of the assembly.
As thus far described, the cloth-board reel 10 has its intermediate sheet 13 and stiffener sheets 15 and 20 exposed at the ends. To cover and further stiffen the assembly, an ovaloid endpiece 30 is engaged in covering.
relation across each exposed end of the assembled sheets. The endpiece 30 may include a pair of flaps 31, each swingable into overlying facing engagement with the adjacent portion of wrapper sheet 26 and adhesively secured thereto. Each ovaloid endpiece 30 and its adjacent fiaps may be integrally fabricated, say of cardboard, or the like, the flaps being hingedly connected to the endpiece, as by score lines. This end construction adds staunchness to the entire assembly, as well as serving to resist local damage at the end regions.
For unity of structure and identification, a paper label may be extended across each endpiece 30, and wrapped about the adjacent flaps 31 and portion of wrapper sheet 26, being adhesively secured in its wrapped condition.
It will now be appreciated that the rectangular crosssectional configuration of corrugations 16 and 21 provides rectangular crest and trough surfaces of substantial area for firm, reliable adhesive securement to the wrapper and intermediate sheets 26 and 13.- This unitary structure .is further rigidified by'the oblique directions of corrugations 16 and 21, as well as securement of endpieces 30 and .flaps 31. In addition, strength is further enhanced by employing paper stock having grain extending in the longitudinal direction of the reel. Thus, the grain of the intermediate sheet 13, stifiener sheets 15 and 20, and
