UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES GOSLING, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
BANGLE FOR JEWELRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,583, dated October 20, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GOSLING, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bangles for Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
WVhat is known as a bangle in jewelers business is a flat ornament, usually a round disk with a suspending-eye by which it is attached to a bracelet, a finger-ring, or other article. Usually these bangles are of gold or silver, and ornamented with devices engraved or stamped upon the surface. These bangles cannot be diversified in appearence to any considerable extent, and they have a more or less common appearance that unfits them for the best class ofjewelry.
My presentinvention is a new article of manufacturenamely, a bangle composed of a thin stoneinlaid with ornaments in precious metal, such as gold, silver, or platina, and having a suspending device. Usually that suspending device is a metallic band of twisted wire surrounding the thin flat stone, and having an eye at the upper side of such band. This bangle is very ornamental and handsome, and is an entirely new article ofjewelry; and it is to be distinguished from an ear-ring or a breastpin, which is complete in itself, as the said bangle becomes a part of the article of jewelry to which it is affixed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the bangle and part of the bracelet from which it is suspended, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same and section of the bracelet. These figures are in enlarged size.
The bangle a is made of a thin fiat stone, usually about half an inch in width, and preferably of dark color, and into the same is inlaid initials, letters, or other ornaments in precious metal, and this bangle is adapted to be suspended by links, or a short chain from the bracelet b or other article of jewelry such as a finger-ring-and, usually, the band of metal a, with the loop or eye d, will be applied around the stone bangle to strengthen and suspend the same.
I claim as my invention- 1. The thin stone bangle inlaid with ornaments in gold or precious metal and having a suspending device, as a new article of manufacture.
2. The thin stone bangle inlaid with ornaments in precious metal and surrounded with a metal band having a suspending eye, as a new article of manufacture.
Signed by me this 14th day of June A. D. 1884.
, CHARLES GOSLING.
