Description

AUivrrnn sfrnrns PATENT onrion.
LEVI A. BEARDSLEY, OF SOUTH EDMESTON, NBDV YORK.
PULLEY-BLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,856, dated July 23, 1861.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI A. BEARDSLEY, of South Edmeston, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Pulley-Blocks; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows a longitudinal section through the center of a compound block: Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same: Fig. 3 is a side view of the same: Figs. A, 5 and 6 show views respectively the same as those of Figs. l, 2 and 3, of a block carrying a single sheave. Figs. 7 and 8 are transverse sections taken respectively at the lines A. B. and C. D. Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference denote the same part in the several figures.
My improvements relate to the frames or blocks of -metallic pulleys and to their bails, having for their object the protection and more perfect guiding of the rope or cord used in the block, also the strengthening of the edges of the frame, having for a further object a strong and light fixed bail.
To these ends my invention consists in extending the sides of the wheel frame or block beyond the face or edge of the wheel, and in turning out the edges of the frame into rounded lip shaped ribs, substantially in the manner, and for the purposes hereinafter set forth; and my said invention also consists in combining with a wheel frame or block of cast metal, a bail or suspending strap of wrought iron, when the said bail is permanently xed to the Wheel frame substantially in the manner hereinafter' described.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, l will proceed to a description thereof, referring in the immediatelyI following description to Figs. 4:, 5, 6, 7 and 8, which show a block carrying a single wheel or sheave a, the arbor Z) of which is sustained in a cast metal frame or casing c. The sides of this frame spread out so as to extend beyond the edges of the sheave up to about its center, while the edges or faces of the frame are cut away so as to be much lower than the sides, and turning outward are rounded over, forming lip shaped beads or ribs c on the outside of the frame or casing at the places where the faces terminate. The edges of the sides of the frame are also turned outward and rounded over forming lip shaped beads or ribs f, which following the contour of the edges of the sides are joined to the beads e; and thus there is formed a continuous rib or flange which strengthens the edges of all parts of the frame or casing, and this rib being rounded as described forms a smooth surface against which a rope or cord may rub without being injured by fraying. rlhe sides of the casing or frame c, extending beyond the edges of the sheave a, effecutally guide the rope or cord which runs on the said sheave, and the faces of the casing, being cut away as described, permit the rope to enter and leave the block at a considerable angle. g is the bail by which the block is suspended. This is made of a strip of wrought iron, which is bent into the proper form and is secured to the block by the ends of the arbor, which project through the ends of this strip are then riveted down onto it. A pin or rivet z' prevents the bail from turning relatively to the block.
The construction and form of the compound Vpulley block which is illustrated by Figs. l, 2 and 3, is similar in all respects to that of the single block herein above described, except that a center piece or plate n, similar in its contour to that of the sides, is provided between the sheaves. The bail of the compound pulley extends entirely around the block forming loops above and below it, and is fastened as before described.
Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. Extending the sides of the cast wheel frame beyond the edges ofthe sheave as described in combination with rib f, and lip e, the whole constructed to operate substan tially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination, with the cast wheel frame, having its edges extended beyond the sheave as described, a fixed bail of wrought iron; the whole arranged to operate as hereinbefore set forth.
L. A. BEARDSLEY.
