NITE TATES PATENT QFFICE,
APPARATUS FOR TESTING FLOUR.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,494, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed February 10, 1885. Serial No. 155,474. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL WILHELM KUNIs, of Reudnitz, Leipsic, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Testing Flour, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an apparatus for ascertaining the rising qualities of flour. It consists in the combination of parts hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a crosssection on line 2 2, Fi 1.
The letter A represents a cylindrical casing open on top and supporting a vessel, B, suspended therein. Beneath the vessel B there is sufficient room for a lamp, F.
Vithin the vessel B there is placed a cylinder, 0, supported by a flanged top upon the upper edge of vessel B. The cylinder 0 contains a smaller cylinder, 1 t This cylinder is composed of three parts, a, b, and a, connected by bayonet-joints. The upper part, a, is open on top and bottom, and supported by a flanged upper edge upon the top of cylinder 0. The part 1) consists of two sections hinged together, (Fig. 3,) and adapted to open and close. The part c is an ordinary cap-piece. Vithin the part a there is placed a loose upright graduated plunger, d which is supported at its base upon the flour to be tested.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The vessel B is filled with a metal bath, and the cylinder D being first withdrawn, the bath is melted by lamp F until the cylinder 0 rises. The lamp is then withdrawn. Meanwhile the cylinder D has been taken apart, filled with a mixture of the flour to be tested and Water, and inserted in the cylinder 0. The heated bath will cause the flour to expand, and in so doing it will force the plunger (1 upward. The expansion of the flour may be read off at the upper edge of cylinder D.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of casing A with vessel B, cylinders O D, and plunger (2, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of vessel B with cylinder 0, sectional cylinder D, and plunger (Z, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of vessel B with cylinder 0, cylinder D, composed of open section a, hinged section b, and cap-piece c, and with graduated plunger d, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
KARL WILHELM KUNIS.
