ATToRNE/Ys WITN ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM TYSON, OF MANSON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO H. B. STAFFORD, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,441, dated October 13. 1885.
Application filed February 7, 1885. Serial No. 155,227. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM TYsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manson, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a vertical sectional view of my device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the false bottom, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to pumping washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and novel. arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates an ordinary wash-boiler, and B a grated platform which is placed therein. This platform or false bottom is supported by the under flange, O,which extends downward from the plate around the same circumferentially, and surrounds the chamber D below the grate E. The end of the plate is provided with the valve-seat G, which is covered with a cone shaped felting, F, said felting extending through the valve-opening a, and being held in position below the margin of said opening by a ring, b,which is secured in the felting, and which, being larger than the valve-Seat opening, serves to hold the felting around the opening in a secure manner. The valve-seat is usually of inverted cone shape,or depressed, and is formed in the rising portion or neck c of the platform, which affords abearing for the pump-cylinder H. A ball-valve, d, rests on the valve-seat upon the felt covering thereof. The opening of the valve-seat communicates with the'chamber D below the grate.
The pump-cylinder H is adapted to be connected to'the neck of the platform, which is located at one end of said platform or false bottom, so that it will be near the end wall of'l the boiler, which is designed to serve as a support to said cylinder, thelatter being provided with arms e e, which extend outward and downward over the margin of the boiler when the pump is in position.
The plunger K of the pump is connected to the lever L by the connecting-rod g, from which branches or arms h extend to the sides of the plunger. The plunger-body is usually made of wood or tin, and is formed with a depressed or inverted cone-shaped seat, k, which is covered with felting m, the felting being extended through the valve-opening l, and provided with a holding-ring similar to that hereinbefore described with reference to the valve-seat of the grate platform. A ball-valve, s, is located on the seat-valve upon the felting.
The felt coverings of the valve-seats are designed to prevent noise, and as they extend over the outer edges of the parts to which they are applied they serve as packings, which are cleanly aswell as effective. 4When necessary, these felt covers can be readily taken out and replaced with new ones.
.The operation is as follows: The clothes being placed upon the grated false bottom in the boiler and the water being poured therein to a height above the clothes and below the spout V of the pump, the latter is put in action by means of the lever drawing the water from the chamber D below the grate platformand throwing it upon the top of the water and the clothes above said platform. In this operation it is designed to create a suction under the grating, drawing the water in currents through the clothes and through said grating downward, the water being supplied above by the pump as it is drawn out below.
In some cases, as when the device is to be used in a wash-tub, the grating is made in the upper portion of aflat box, the bottom of which is 'closed to form a chamber into which the water descends through the grating, and from which it is driven by the pump.
I am aware that it is not new to employ pumps in washing -machines, and I do not broadly claim such devices.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The grate platform having at one end the valveseat, and the pump-cylinder connected to said valve-seat and provided with arms adapted to engage the margin of the washboiler, substantially as'specied.
2. The combination, With the Wash-boiler and pump-cylinder,of the grate platform having a neck adapted to engage the pump-cylinder and surrounding the valve-seat, and an under circumferential lange inelosing a chambei' below the grate platform, Which communicates throughthevalve-seat with the pumpeylinder, substantially as specified.
