Schluchter, Geneva, Switzerland, assignor to Intercontinental Technical Services Limited, London, England, a corporation of Great Britain Filed Feb. 25, 1965, Ser. No. 435,244 Claims priority, application Switzerland, Feb. 27, 1964, 2,558/ 64 2 Claims. (Cl. 225-65) This invention relates to devices enabling pieces to be cut from rolls of self-adhesive tape.
Tapes or strips of self-adhesive or self-sticking materials are being used more and more in oflices, by draughtsmen, for example, and in various occupations, in particular by coach or body builders in their paintshops, and even by handymen. The tapes are cut as required. To facilitate cutting, they are frequently on dispensers, made of plastic materials for example, equipped with cutters which, after cutting keep a length of tape detached from the roll. In this way, the difficulty of having to look for the free end of the tape and to detach it every time it is desired to cut off a piece is avoided. Unfortunately, these dispensers are bulky and, consequently, impractical if it is desired to put the roll in ones pocket in order to have it readily to hand.
The device according to the present invention remedies this drawback and it is characterised by the fact that it is formed by a spring bearing resiliently by at least one of its portions on the inner cylindrical surface of the roll, and by a cutter applied against the outer cylindrical surface of the roll by the spring, the blade thereof being located at a predetermined distance from this surface, the whole in such manner that it is possible, on the one hand, to cause the device to slide along the roll accordingly as it is used, and on the other hand, to keep it in the places where the tape must be cut.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example, two embodiments of the invention, and in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a roll equipped with the first form of embodiment;
FIGURES 2 and 3 are similar views showing the two parts of the device when removed.
FIGURE 4 is an elevational view of the second form of embodiment;
FIGURE 5 is a plan view thereof.
The device shown in FIGURES 1 to 3 is mounted on a roll A of self-adhesive tape. It is constituted by two parts; a steel wire spring and a cutter 11 formed by a stamped metal plate. The spring 10 has two limbs 10a and 10b which may be spaced from one another elastically by twisting portion 100 connecting them. These limbs terminate in transverse portions 10d and 10:2. The width of the portions 10c, 10a, 10a corresponds to that of the tape. The portion 102 comprises two sections bent back one on to the other in such manner as to form a passage into which central portion 11a of the cutter 11 can be introduced. When the latter is placed in position in this way on the spring and the latter is mounted on the roll A in the manner indicated in FIGURE 1, the portions 10c and 10d of the spring bear on the inner cylindrical face of the roll and the portion 110 of the cutter 11 bears on the outer cylindrical face of the roll A. The blade 11b of the cutter is then located at a predetermined distance from the outer surface of the roll. The limbs 10a and 10b and bent end 10 of the spring prevent any lateral displacement of the device.
On the other hand, the device can be moved by sliding it around the roll in the direction of the arrow F, thus enabling the cutter to be brought to the desired place for cutting the tape. This movement having been effected, the device is held with the thumb and the forefinger of the hand holding the roll to press the portion on the outer cylindrical surface of the roll A so that the blade 11b is spaced from such surface and the required length of tape is detached with the other hand, after which the tape is cut by turning it back on to the blade. The cutting having been effected, a tongue B, detached from the remainder of the roll, and adhering to the blade is left and this can be gripped without any difiiculty when it is desired to cut off a fresh piece of tape.
The device sshown in FIGURES 4 and 5 differs from the device just described in the form of the cutter 11 and of the spring 10. The spring 10 has the form of a U, the limbs 10a and 10b of which have a tendency to spread. 10c and 10d represent the ends of these limbs and are bent parallel to the web or centre portion 10s and termi nate in a tongue 10 The cutter 11 is constituted by a small shoe of injection moulded plastics material having a groove 11g in which the web or centre portion like of the spring is housed. Two impressions 11h cause the web to be imprisoned in the groove.
The two sections 10c and 10d of the spring bearing resiliently against the inside of the roll apply the shoe 11 against its outer surface.
This device is used like that previously described. Its advantage over the latter is that it has a better symmetry which increases its stability. Moreover, the seating of the shoe 11 is particularly good and the sliding of the device can be facilitated thereby. Finally, the cost of the injection moulded shoe is very low. It is quite obvious that the invention is not limited to the embodiments shown in the drawing. In particular, the spring and the blade could form only one single piece.
