SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,279, dated October 13, 1835. Application filed July 8, 1885. Serial No. 171,000. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. BONNER, J r. a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Awnings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of an awning embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof in line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a trans verse section thereof in line y 3 Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent transverse sections of various forms.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

My invention consists-0f an awning having a slide whereby a portion of the awning may be opened to admit light below the awning, said slide being so guided as to be easily operated and prevented from being raised by Wind.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the top or roof of an awning, which is properly supported, and B represents a slide which is fitted thereto for covering and uncovering an opening, 0, in the top A, said opening, when uncovered, being adapted to admit light to the windows or pavement below.

Attached to the slide B are arms D, which project laterally from the slide and beyond the same, and carry at their outer ends pulleys or rollers E, which rest and ride on Ways F, the latter being attached to the top A at the sides of the opening 0. I

It will be seen that the slide may be moved in opening and closing directions. guided by the rollers E, on the ways F, so that it is operated with ease and but little friction, owing to the weight of the slide being transmitted to the rollers.

In order to prevent the lifting of the slide by the wind, there are attached to the top A, at

thesides of the opening 0, guards G, which overhang the side edges of the slide B, as in Fig. 6, or are elevated, as in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and hang over the rollers E. In Figs. 4. and 5 the inner edges of the ways F form lips which overhang the side edges of the slide, and in all cases the guards serve to prevent elevation of the slide in the case of wind striking the same from below and also assist in guiding the slide.

The top and slide are shown as made of corrugated sheet iron, to which material, however, I do not limit myself; and the rollers, and consequently the ways, may be of various forms, examples of which are shown in the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as -new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An awing having a top provided with an opening, a slide for covering and uncovering said opening, rollers mounted on said slide, and ways attached to the top, the rollers resting on said ways, substantially as described.

2. An awning having a top provided with an opening, a slide for covering and uncovering saidopening, ways attached to the top at the sides of the opening, laterally-projecting arms connected with the slide and extending beyond the sides of said slide, and rollers mounted on said arms resting on said ways, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. An awning having a top provided with an opening, a slide for covering and uncovering the said opening, ways attached to the top, rollers connected with the slide, and guards G, attached to the top and overhanging the slide for preventing lifting of the latter, substantially as described.
