RUSSELL CAPTIVE CLOSURE CAP Filed Dec. 9, 1954 United States Patent 3,282,478 CAPTIVE CLOSURE CAP John Keith Russell, 42 Valecrest Drive, Islington, Ontario, Canada Filed Dec. 9, 1964, Ser. No. 417,059 1 Claim. (Cl. 222542) This invention relates to closures and more particularly to closures for containers adapted to contain, paste, glue, mucilage and other fluid materials which congeal and set to hardness on contact with air.
Captive cap closures, i.e., those closures constituted by a nozzle communicating with the interior of the container, a cap to close off the opening of the nozzle, and a strap connecting the cap to the nozzle, are now well known. However, these existing captive cap closures are generally not suitable for use on containers adapted to contain paste, glue, etc., since they generally could not effectively exclude air from the nozzle opening. In general, then some of the paste, glue, etc., would set in the nozzle opening when the cap was in place, and thus make further use of the glue difficult since the set glue would have to be removed first.
A prime feature of the present invention is the provision of a captive cap closure wherein there is enhanced sealing of the opening in the nozzle by the cap.
By a broad aspect of the present invention, there is provided a captive cap closure comprising a nozzle including an aperture therein, a cover to close said aperture, and a strap integral with said nozzle and with said cover and interconnecting the two; said nozzle being of frustoconical shape and having a frusto-conical interior surface adjacent said aperture; and said cover being provided with an interior upstanding centrally located frusto-conical projection, adapted to enter said aperture to provide sealing contact between the exterior frusto-conical face of said projection and the interior frusto-conical face of said aperture. Preferably, there is provided an integral onepiece captive cap closure formed of deformable, resilient material comprising a nozzle including an aperture therein, a cover to close said aperture, and a strap integral with said nozzle and with said cover and interconnecting the two; said nozzle being of frusto-conical shape and having a frusto-conical interior surface adjacent said aperture, the exterior surface of said nozzle being provided with an annular rib near said aperture; and said cover being provided with an interior upstanding centrally located frusto-conical projection, adapted to enter said aperture to provide primary sealing contact between the exterior frusto-conical face of said projection and the interior frusto-conical face of said aperture, the interior surface of said cover being provided with an annular rib, adapted to be moved beyond the annular rib on said frusto-conical nozzle and thereby to provide a secondary sealing contact between said nozzle and said cover.

The cap consists generally of three parts, namely a nozzle 10, a cover 11 and a connecting strap 12.
The nozzle comprises a lower hollow cylindrical 3,282,478 Patented Nov. 1, 1966 portion 13 which is adapted to be inserted into the neck of a container (not shown). Enhanced fitting between the cylindrical portion 13 and the neck of the container is provided by an annular rib 14. Since the cap is made of a resilient non-rigid plastic material, for example, polyethylene or nylon, the rib 14 is deformed and presses against the interior surface of the neck of the container. Limit of movement of the cylindrical portion 13 into the neck of the container is provided by an outwardly pro jecting ring 15.
Extending upwardly from the ring 15 is a hollow frustoconical nozzle portion 16 terminating in an aperture 17. The interior surface of the nozzle portion 16 is also frusto-conical in shape. The nozzle portion 16 is provided with an annular rib 18 near the aperture 17, whose purpose will be described hereinafter.
The cover 11 is provided in inverted frusto-conical shape, and includes a flat integral lid portion 19. A solid integral frusto-conical extension 20 is provided upstanding from the interior of the lid portion 19 at the center thereof. In addition, an internal annular rib 21 is provided on the interior of the cover 11 near the opening 24 thereof. The purpose of the rib 21 and the extension 20 will be described hereinafter.
A pair of spaced apart annular ribs 22 is provided on the exterior of the cover 11, to provide finger gripping means to assist in removing the cover from the nozzle. In addition, the cover is provided with an integral ring 23, which is integral with the connecting strap 12. The con necting strap 12 is also integral with the ring 15.
In operation, when it is desired to close the nozzle, the cover 11 is rotated in a clock-wise direction (enabled by the bending of strap 12) until the opening 24 is in registry with the aperture 17. The frusto-conical extension 20 enters the aperture 17 and primary sealing contact is provided between the exterior frusto-conical walls of extension 20 and the interior frusto-conical walls of the nozzle 16. Secondary sealing is provided when the annular rib 21 deforms annular rib 18 and extends downwardly beyond such rib 18, as shown in FIG. 3.
I claim:
An integral one-piece captive cap closureformed of polyethylene and adapted to yieldably engage a dispensing aperture of a container comprising a nozzle including an outlet aperture therein, a cover to close said aperture, and a strap integral with said nozzle and with said cover and interconnecting the two; said nozzle having a major portion of hollow frusto-conical shape and of uniform thin walls providing a frusto-conical interior surface terminating in said outlet aperture, the exterior surface of said nozzle being provided with an annular rib near said outlet aperture and having a minor portion of generally cylindrical shape and of uniformly thin walls providing a cylindrical interior surface which terminates in an inlet aperture; said cover being of generally truncated conical shape and being provided with an interior upstanding centrally located frusto-conical projection, adapted to enter said outlet aperture of said nozzle to provide primary sealing contact between the exterior frusto-conical face of said projection and the interior frusto-conical face of said outlet aperture, the interior surface of said cover being provided with an inner annular rib spaced from the base thereof adapted to be moved beyond the annular rib on said frusto-conical nozzle and thereby to provide secondary sealing contact between said nozzle and said cover; and said strap extending from the base of said cover to the area of union between the frustoconical and cylindrical portions of said nozzle.
