SCHAMU M. MOSCHCOWITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED PATTERN AND FABRIC.
ESPECIFICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,961, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed August 11, 1883. Serial No. 103,502. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SCHAMU M. Moscnoo- WITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Patterns and Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in printing, stamping, or otherwise indicating upon a web of paper, patterns of any article of wearingapparel, and rolling said paper upon a web of the fabric from which the articles are to be manufactured, the two being attached at intervals in any suitable manner, so that the paper may be easily removed from the material when required.
The purpose of my invention is to avoid printing upon the fabric itself, certain materials, such as silks, serges, &c., being ill adapted for that purpose; to effect an economy of the material by the judicious arrangement of the patterns; to enable the articles to be out according to the grain or thread of the fabric, and to provide an extremely cheap pattern-web which is attached to and sold with the goods, and by which the latter are kept clean.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of the paper web with patterns printed, indented, or otherwise indicated thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the pattern web rolled upon the fabric.
A in said drawings represents a web of paper having delineated thereon in any suitable manner patterns of various articles of apparel. The outer or heavier lines, a, indicate the margin of each pattern where the same are to be cut, and the inner and lighter dotted lines show where the seam is to be made, and one or both of these lines may be traced or transferred from the pattern web to the material by means of a tracing-wheel before cutting.
In the drawings I have shown one method only of delineating the pattern upon the paper web, but it is evident that this may be done in avariety of ways without affecting my invention. For example, the outlines may be perforated or indented, or those portions of the web surrounding the several patterns may be shaded, leaving the body of each other words, unshaded.
B indicates the fabric upon which the pattern-web is laid, the two being rolled up together. The pattern-web A may be fastened at intervals to the fabric B in any suitable manner, so that when the goods are sold the pattern-web and the fabric are out from the entire roll together.
The pattern-web is printed from a cylinder which, at each revolution, repeats the same series of patterns, the arrangement of the several patterns being such as to give the greatest possible economy of material, and at the same time to permit the c.oth to be out according to its grain or thread, which is a matter of importance.
Myinvention is particularly adapted to the manufacture of shirts, the patterns of the several partsbeing delineated upon the paper web and rolled up with the material in the manner described.
I am aware that it is not new to print patterns upon lining fabrics basted to the material and sold with it; but in such cases the purchaser must buy the lining as well as the goods, and in the many cases in which linings are not used, or in which the purchaser is already provided therewith, it is evident that such a pattern-web gnot available. By my invention, however, i ffirnish an inexpensive pattern, by which economy of material is secured, the fabric is out according to the grain, and the goods are protected from soiling. The pattern may be reproduced upon the material by a tracing-wheel before cutting, or the line of the same may be so traced and the pattern then cut with the goods, after which the former may be easily detached and thrown.
awa
I m aware that it is old to make a roll of shirting with patterns of the several parts of a shirt; also, that it has been proposed to perforate the pattern of several part-s of a garment through a sheet of material and use the pattern by laying the same upon the cloth to be cut, and then applying a powder or liquid to the surface of the pattern, so that it will pass through the perforations to the cloth, the
pattern beingthen removed for future use, and said fabric, the two webs being attached at so that the cloth can be out according to the intervals and rolled up together, substantially marking thus applied. My invention differs as and for the purposes described. therefrom in the particulars hereinbefore fully In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 5 described and specified in the following claim. my hand in the presence of two subscribing I 5 Having thus described my invention, what witnesses.
I claim is SOHAMU M. MOSOHOOWITZ.
As an article of manufacture, a web of fabric \Vitnesses: and a'paper web having represented thereon OTTO BAUMANN, '10 patterns of articles of apparel to be made from O. J SoLYoM.
