UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM B. FRY, OF POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOOP-COILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,935, dated October 6, 1885.
Application filed May 11, 1885. Serial No. 165,042. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM B. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoop-Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front view of a hoopmachine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section thereof in line m as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a rear view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a hoop-machine provided with a rotary drum on which ahoop is wound, and a clamp for holding the hoop during the fastening operation, and other features are presented, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rotary drum of conical form, whose hub is mounted on a horizontal bolt or axis, B, the latter being tightly secured to the frame 0 of the machine, and the former having connected with it a suitable crank-handle.
In the standard D of the frame is a vertical slot, E, in which is fitted a rising and falling head, F, to which is connected aconical roller, G, which, as will be seen, projects from said head horizontally above the drum A.
Attached to the head F, by means of a rod, H, is a treadle, J, whereby said head may be depressed or lowered, its return or elevation being effected by a suitably-applied spring, K.
The drum A is hollow, and the peripheral rim thereof is split or divided, as at L, through which the end of the hoop material is inserted, said material being bent or wound around the drum and properly lapped over said end, after which the treadle J is depressed, so that the roller is brought into contact with the hoop as shaped, and caused to hold the same firmly on the drum during the riveting or fastening of the hoop. When the aforesaid operations are completed, the treadle J is released and the roller G rises, thus releasing the hold on the hoop, and the latter may then be removed from the drum, so that another length of hoop material may be applied thereto and the other operations proceeded with.
The drum is hollow and adapted to contain a coil or bundle of hoop-iron or material, which may be run off, as desired, through the throat or division L. For flat wooden hoops, where the hoops are thicker at one edge than the other, I employ a cylindrical roller, G, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2, the same and the drum A conforming to the shape of such hoops.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A frame having a vertical slot-,in combination with arotary drum mounted on said frame, a rising and falling head fitted in said slot, a roller mounted on said head, and a treadle connected with said head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A frame having a vertical slot, a rotary drum mounted on said frame, a rising and falling head fitted in said slot, a roller connected with said head, and a rod, spring, and treadle for operating said head, combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A frame having a vertical slot, a rotary drum mounted on said frame, a rising and falling head fitted in said slot, and a roller mounted on said head, the drum being hollow and having a throat in its peripheral rim, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A frame having a verticalslot, in combibination with a rotary drum mounted on said frame, a rising and falling head fitted in said slot, a roller mounted on said head, and an operating treadle connected with said head, the drum being hollow and having a throat in its peripheral rim, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ABRAHAM B. FRY.
