SPECIFCATIGN forming part of Letters ?a`tent No. 3271761, dated @oteber 6, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may conceive:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs M. Binner, of Newton, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Calculating Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying` drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation oi" a part of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation ofthe same, taken through the line x x, Fig. l.
rlhe object of this invention is to provide a convenient and reliable means. for instantly reducing the number of pounds in loads oi' grain and other substances to bushels.
The invention consists in a grain-calculating device constructed with a plate having ianges provided with a series of pivoted rollers and cross-strips above the rollers, the said strips and rollers being provided with tables, prepared in the manner hereinafter fully described, for instantly finding the number of bushels in a given number of pounds, as hereinafter set forth.
A represents a plate of any desired or convenient length and width, to which, at or near its side edges, are attached side piecesV or flanges, B.
To the iianges B are journaled one or more rollers, C, according as the owner deals in one or more kinds of grain or other substances having a different number of pounds to a bushel. To a journal of each roller C is attached a knob or hand-wheel, D, for convenience in` turning the said rollers.
To the flanges B, above each roller C, is attached a cross-strip, E, the edge of which, adjacent to a roller, is beveled upon the inner side, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the edges oi' the strip will come close to the said roller.
Upon the upper part of the strips E is printed or otherwise formed the name or names of the substance or substances to which the rollers next below the'said strips are propriated, and which have the same number of pounds to a bushel. The number of pounds to the bushel of the said substances can also be printed upon the strips E, if desired; but this is not essential, especially in the case of substances whose weight per bushel is well known.
rlhe lower part of each strip E is divided into eleven spaces. ln the iirst or lcftvhand space are printed the letters lbs.;77 in the second space is a zero, and in the other spaces are the numbers l0, 20, ne., up to and including 90..
The face ol." each of the rollers C is divided into eleven annular spaces by lines in line with the lines between the numbers on the corresponding strips E, and into longitudinal spaces by lines parallel with the lower edge oi' the said strip E. In the annular space below the letters lbs.77 are the numbers 100, 260, and so on all around the roller. The remaining spaces are illed by numbers representing the quoticnts and remainders found by dividing the numbers of hundreds at the beginning of the horizontal spaces plus the number of pounds on the strip in line with the annular spaces by the number of pounds in a bushel ot' the grain or substance denoted on the strip E immediately above.
For example, in using the rst roller, suppose the number of pounds of ear-corn to be reduced to bushels is three hundred and eighty. The roller is turned to bring the 30077 to the edge -of the strip above the said roller, and in the space at the edge of the said strip, under the number 80,77 is the large ligure 5 77 and the small figures 30,7 showing that the given number of pounds contained five bushels and thirty pounds, the number of bushels being ascertained without any calculating and in an instant.
Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire te secure by Letters Patent- A calculating device constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting el' the plate A, having flanges B, provided with series oi' pivoted rollers, C, and crossstrips E above the rollers, the said strips bearing the name or names oi' the substance or substances to which the corresponding roller is appropriated, and a row of eleven spaces containing theletters lbs. ,77 the zero, and the nine tens in consecutive order, and the said IOC rollers bearing eleven annular spaces divided by the number of pounds in a bushel of the by longitudinal lines intoaseries of horizontal said substance or substances, as set forth.
spaces, the first annular row of spaces contain- CHARLES M. BRADT. ing hundreds, and each of the other spaces Witnesses: 5 containing the quotient and remainder found H. N. HUBBARD, by dividing the hundreds at the left of the JOHN W. ORR, said space plus the tens above the said space J. WESLEY OBR.
