- FIGURE 8 is a plan view similar to FIGURE 2 with the knob completely removed and parts broken away to show the clamping lever in the groove on the writing implement side of the quadrilateral body plate;
- FIGURE '9 is an exploded view showing the quadrilateral main plate with the extension on which the writing implement is to be mounted and showing the two-part clamping lever with the parts separated and showing the parking lever with its retaining spring and also showing the tail bar to illustrate the details on an enlarged scale.
- the present invention includes a lever system for releasably securing a writing implement on the scriber and such means includes a pair of levers pivotally mounted closely adjacent the opening for receiving the writing implement with a spring to urge the levers in a direction to press the levers into tight contact with the writing implement while providing for ready releasability with the draftsman retaining the scriber in the usual drafting position.
- a parking lever having a finger engaging handle at one end and an arcuate-shaped leg on the other end is pivotally mounted adjacent the handle end so the leg passes beyond the plane defined by the points of the writing implement, the tail pin and the template guided stylus whereby the writing implement is held out of contact with the paper when the leg is projected and suitable means are provided to retain the parking lever in its operative and its inoperative positions.
- the invention also includes a novel structure of a scriber chassis which includes a generally trapezoidalshaped plate with an extension on one side extending away from the short face to provide for supporting the writing implement while the tail pin is mounted on a vertically extending plate-like bar which serves as the mounting member for the parking lever while the template guided stylus is mounted for adjustment about a pivot point to vary the angularity of the characters being drawn by the writing implement.
- a handle is provided to cover the major portion of the parking lever and shaped to facilitate manipulation of the scriber, including the clamping levers and the parking levers.
- the scriber comprises a chassis having a generally quadrilateral plate 10 having substantially equal angles between a short edge with an extension 11 along one of the sides extending away from the short edge with said extension being provided with a writing implement receiving aperture 12 for accommodating a writing implement such as a tubular reservoir pen 13.
- a relatively flat tail bar 14 substantially bisects the angles formed by the sides adjacent the short edge and is mounted substantially perpendicular to the plate 10 by means of mounting screws 15 freely received in counterbored apertures 16, 16 in the base plate 10 and threadedly received in threaded bores 17, 17 formed in the front notched portion of the tail bar 14 thereby providing a rigid chassis.
- a tail pin 18 includes a threaded stud 19 having a hexagonal head 20 which is screw threaded into an enlargement 21 at the rear of the tail bar 14 so the pin 18 may be guided in the longitudinal groove of a t mplate.
- a character tracing stylus 22 is mounted on an arcuately adjustable arm 23 pivoted on a pin 24 and clamped in adjusted position by a knurled nut 25 cooperating with a threaded bolt 26 in the usual manner to retain the stylus 22 in the desired position relative to the writing implement 13 and the tail pin 18 to obtain the desired effect.
- the one side of the .plate 10 and the extension 11 are provided with a lever receiving groove 27 which receives the webs 28, 28A of the clamping levers which also have upwardly and downwardly extending flanges 29 and 29A, respectively, and such clamping levers are pivotally mounted in the groove 27 by a tight-fitting pin 30 passing through aligned pin receiving openings 31, 31A and 313 in the levers and in the extension 11, and the tail ends of such levers are urged outwardly from the plate by means of a compression spring 32 loosely received in an aperture 33 whereby the tail ends of the levers are urged outwardly and the ends of the levers forwardly of the pivot pin are urged inwardly so that notches 34, 34A in the levers embrace and contact the cylindrical portion of the writing implement 13 to effectively retain the writing implement in position.
- the materials of the levers are resilient and that each lever effectively contacts the writing implement, since the compression spring 32 is sutficiently strong to partially bend the levers within their elastic limit to produce the resilient individual gripping action of the levers against the writing implement thereby elfectiuely retaining the writing implement in position while permitting release of the writing implement by movement of the tail ends of the levers toward the plate 10.
- a parking lever 35 having an arcuate leg 36 at one end, an angular handle 37 at the other end with the connecting portions including a base section 38 and an angularly extending section 39 is pivotally mounted by means of a pin 40 passing through an aperture 41 adjacent the handle 37 and extending into a pin receiving aperture 41 in the tail bar 14 whereby the leg 36 passes through the parking leg receiving aperture 42 in the plate 10 whereby the foot of the parking leg 36 extends beyond the plane defined by the points of the Writing implement 13, the tail pin 18 and the tracing scriber 22 for supporting the scriber with the writing implement out of contact with the drawing with the lever shown in parking position in FIGURES 4 and 6 with the dotted outline of FIGURE 6 showing the inoperative position of the parking lever when the 'scriber is used in drawing characters.
- a Z-shaped spring including a mounting bar 43, a stem 44 and a rubbing bar 45 is mounted by its bar 43 on the reduced forward projecting end of the tail bar by means of a screw 46 passing through an aperture in the bar 43 of the Z-shaperd spring and threaded into a threaded aperture 47 with the stem 44 extending over the reduced end of the bar 14 and projecting beyond so that the stem 44 engages the upper edge of the lever section 39 when the parking lever is in its operative position while the bar 45 of the Z-shaped spring engages the side of the lever to frictionally retain the parking lever in its raised position thereby assuring a semi-positive action on the parking lever thereby avoiding any [danger of the leg 36 being withdrawn unitentionally.
- Notohes 48, 48A are provided in the clamping levers to clear the parking leg 36 in all positions thereof.
- Threaded apertures 49 and 50 are provided to receive the threaded spacer screw 51 to obtain the desired spacing of the Writing nib of the writing implement, particularly when the writing implement is a pen, to avoid excessive force between the writing point and the paper and suitable clearance openings 52, 52A and 53, 53A are provided in the webs of the clamping levers to provide the proper clearance for the spacer adjusting screw 51 regardless of which threaded aperture is used.
- a handle or manipulating knob 54 is provided with a recess 55 in which the parking lever 35 operates and such opening 55 includes a rearwardly extending rectangular passage 56 of a width substantially equal to the thickness of the bar 14 and the parking lever, the walls of such passage 56 serving to retain the pin 40 and the lever 35 in operative position and effectively guiding the lever and reinforcing the lever to take the lateral thrust of the Z-shaped spring 43, 44, 45 and the handle 37 of the lever extends nearwardly and can be manipulated by one of the fingers of the draftsman.
- the manipulating knob 54 is secured to the base plate 10 by means of screws passing through apertures 57, 57A and 57B.
