BUTTER-WORKER.

Specification of Letters latent No. 82,717, dated July 2, 1861.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Gnonon M. Rirokons, of Hamilton, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Implements or Dovices for lVorking Butter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. :2 represents the car and compressor invented. Fig. 3 is an end view of the compressor, the same being shown in connection with the car Figs. '1 and 2.

My improvement has reference to the particular manner in which 1 construct, and the particular form given to the compressor A.

It also consists in the relative arrangement and combination of the several parts comprising the car and tray, and their adaptation to the working of butter, all of which will be presently described.

lit also consists in a new and useful mode of connecting and disconnecting the car and tray.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct compressor A, which is represented in Figs. 1 and 2, of four square scantling, varying in size from three to four inches or thereabout, and of a length in proportion to the width of the tray. On the outer surface of said scantling, l place four thin ribs, marked B, F 1, 2 and 3. Said compressor is also provided with ends C, and supported upon bearings in the usual manner.

I am well aware that form alone is not patcntable, except in cases where new and useful results, or important advantages are conferred upon a particular machine, art or manufacture.

The advantages resulting from the par ticular form of the compressor a, above de scribed, are: first, cheapness of construction; second, presenting alternately, a series of broad based or obtuse angles, which prevent in an efficient manner, the butter from adhering to said compressor, also giving greater pressure to a larger amount of butter than any other form.

1 construct the tray M, in any well known form, and of any desired size. I place upon the side of said tray a track or ways marked E, said ways are connected to the tray about one fourth of an inch below the upper edge thereof, one of them is not shown in the drawings.

To connect the compressor A, and its auxiliaries in a convenient manner to the tray, I make the ways hereinbefore described, in two parts; the part marked F, Fig. 1, may be moved downward, or one end thereof, forming an opening as represented at N.

0, 0, 0, represents a car, Fig. 1, said car is also shown in Fig. 2.

H, H, represent two friction rollers in' combination with metallic plates 1', 2". Said rollers are so arranged as to run directly in under ways E, thereby preventing an upward movement of the shaft during its operation.

At a point about the center of car 0, and shown at 7', 7', Fig. 2, I pivot two friction rollers, said rollers during the operation of the car above referrml to, prevent in a measure, the friction that would be caused by its rapid movements over the tray.

K, represents a pin passing through the bearing, av precisely similar arrangement is used at the opposite end of the shaft, for the purpose of retaining the car in proper relative relation to the tray.

My improved butter worker, is so constructed as to be readily attached to a c0111- mon table, and by a slight movement may be changed from a level to an inclined plane sidewise, and in the line of its length so as to allow the liquid expressed from the butter, to be removed from the tray.

I derive important advantages over butter workers which are provided with movable bottoms, such machines require a large amount of power to move the bottom, which must at all times carry the butter with it.

My improved mode of operating the car, and combining it with the tray, in contradistinction to the use of gears has many adanta 'e-s, the most prominent of which is, that as the car passes back and forth over the tray, i am enabled to revolve the compressor A, in either direction, and at any desired velocity, so as not only to work the butter in the most perfect manner but in stantly to collect the same into a roll.

Having thus fully described the several parts of my improved butter Worker, and pointed out the manner in Which it may be made available, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

5 l. The particular form of compressor A,

made by four narrow angular strips, attached to a square shaft, as set forth.

2. The combination of the car 0, With the compressor A. and tray M, by means of the 10 track E, and upper and lower friction rollers H H and j, j, arranged substantially as herein set forth.

3. The mode of connecting and disconnecting the car and tray, by means of a movable portion of the track or Way, as set forth. 15
