Mmm/EY United States Patent O 3,270,993 GARBAGE CAN LID MOUNTING Ernest R. Montague, Moses Lake, Wash., assignor of one-half to Fred C. Bindel, Moses Lake, Wash. Filed Feb. 2, 1965, Ser. No. 429,821 8 Claims. (Cl. 248-147) This invention relates to la mounting for garbage can lids so as to `support such lids and position them for convenient application to and removal from associated garbage cans.
A principal object of the invention is'to provide such a garbage can lid mounting which will support a garbage can lid effectively and conveniently for movement between an open position in which access to the garbage can is afforded and a closed position in which the garbage can is covered and which mounting when the cover is in its position closing the garbage can will anchor the can so as to prevent it from being tipped over inadvertently and |will prevent the cover from being blown off by wind.
Another object is to provide such a garbage can lid mounting which will support the garbage can lid so that it can be moved between the raised lcan-open position and the lowered can-closing position with one hand and without requiring the person manipulating the cover to ltwist or stoop. In such operation it is an object to permit only limited swinging of the lid, if any, relative to the lid support.
In addition, it is an object of the invention to provide garbage can lid-supporting mechanism which will be latched securely both in its raised can-open position and in its lowered can-closed position and which mechanism preferably will be self-latching in each of such positions.
Another object is to provide such a garbage can lid mounting which can be assembled `and installed easily and quickly. Such construction is of rugged character, requires a minimum of maintenance and yet is inexpensive to construct, being composed of few parts, some of which are duplicates, and which parts can be fabricated from stock material which can be formed by simple die operations Iand can be secured together by spot welding.
'In general the garbage can lid mounting can be attached to a post, a pipe or a iwall to which a pivot mounting attachment is secured. To such pivot mounting is attached by a pivot the pivoted end of la swinging arm having a garbage can lid-mounting yoke carried by its swingingend. Swinging of the arm and lid carried thereby is effected by a handle on the end of a rod extendling lengthwise of the swinging arm by lengthwise movement of which latch mechanism oan be engaged and disengaged for holding the lid-carrying arm either in upright position or in generally horizontal position. A helical spring is engaged with the reciprocable rod t urge it toward latched position.
FIGURE 1 is a top perspective of the garbage can lid mounting `and 'a garbage can lid carried thereby, parts being broken away.
FIGURE 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the garbage can lid mounting with the mounting and lid in raised position and FIGURE 3 is a transverse section through the mounting taken on line 3 3 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a detail top perspective of the swinging end portion of the mounting on an enlarged scale with parts broken away.
The garbage can lid 1 and the garbage can 2 on which it fits may be of any conventional type and size, but customarily such garbage cans are made of galvanized iron. A handle 3 is provided on the center of the lid by which it can be handled. Such handle is not used when the lid is attached to the garbage can lid mount- "ice ing of the present invention, but the conventional handle does not interfere with the attachment of the lid t0 the mounting and need not be removed. It is desirable, however, for the lid to be supported at its center and for this purpose the central portion of a U-shaped yoke 4 can be secured to the lcentral portion of the garbage can lid by bolt 5. Use of such attaching means wvill enable the lid .to be removed from the mounting whenever it may be desired.
The mounting itself can be secured to a wooden post 6 or to a wall by anchoring lan attachment 7 with lag screws 8 at a height corresponding to the height of the particular garbage can used. If desired, bolts can be substituted for such lag screws. The attachment can be secured to a pipe post by a U-bolt clamp embracing the pipe and having threaded ends extending through the holes in the attachment strap 24 at opposite sides of the pipe.
The attachment 7 includes a U-shaped yoke 9 which may be of the same size and material as the yoke 4 for purposes of economy and this yoke serves as the mounting for a pivot, bolt or rivet 10 which also extends through the pivoted end portion of the swinging arm 11. This arm is preferably made of channel-shaped cross section which may either be cut yto length from a rolled channel section or bent into channel shape from heavy sheet metal by the use of a die. The yoke 4 secured to the garbage can lid 1 is connected to the swinging end portion of the arm 11 by a bolt or rivet connector 12, which may engage the arm sufiiciently tightly to hold the garbage can lid against swinging relative to the Iarm, if desired. To enable the lid to be removed from the arm quickly, the connector 12 is preferably of the toggle pin type as shown. An additional hole or holes spaced lengthwise of arm 11 may be provided to receive connector 12 at a location to lalter the spacing between the attachment 7 and the lid handle 3.
As seen .in FIGURES 1, 3 and 4, the ends of the yokes 4 and 9 are spread suiciently so that such yokes embrace the arm 11. The end of such arm adjacent to the attachment 7 stops short of such attachment While the swinging end portion of the arm projects beyond the yoke 4. The length of such arm between the bolts 10 and 12 should exceed appreciably the radius of the garbage can lid so that, when the lid is in place on the garbage can 2, such can will be spaced a substantial distance from the post 6 or other support. Also by having the distance between the bolts 10 and 12 substantially greater than the radius of the garbage can lid, upward swinging of the swinging end of such arm will lift the lid bodily oif the garbage can as the arm is swung upward.
The opposite ends of 4the arm 11 as closed by angle plates 13, one leg of which in each instance is of a size substantially equal `to the internal cross section of the arm channel and the other leg of which is located contiguous to the inner side of the Channel web and is secured to its respective end portion of such web by spotwelds 14. Holes in the central portions of such end closures receive and guide for reciprocation a rod 15 extending completely through the arm. The end of such rod adjacent to the swinging end of arm 11 is bent at an angle to the portion of the rod extending through the arm 11 to form a handle 16. The opposite end of the rod is of a length to t into a socket shown in the form of the latch hole 17 in the vertical portion of the attachment 7 when the arm 11 is in horizontal position and to t into a socket shown in the form of the notch 18 in the projecting shelf of the attachment when the arm 11 is swung into the upright position of FIGURE 2 in which the garbage can lid 1 is lifted from the can 2.
Within the end of swinging arm 11 remote from the pivot bolt a helical spring 21 which encircles the latch rod so that one end of such spring bears against the inner side of the arms swinging end closure 13. The other end of such spring bears against a washer 22, the movement of which along the latch rod away from the swinging end of the arm is limited by a drive pin 22 extending through the rod and beyond its opposite sides at an angle of about 45 degrees. Such pin projects into the corner of the arm so as to limit rotation of the latch rod and handle. Outside the arm end plate 13 the handle 16 is bent sharply so as to engage such end plate and serve as a stop to ylimit the extent of movement of the latch rod toward the attachment 7.
The oppositely extending ends of strap 24 4form ears through which extend the lag screws 8 or bolts anchoring the attachment to the post. Both the yoke central portion and the strap 24 are spot-Welded to the attachment. As shown in FIGURE 2, it is preferred that the angle between the projecting ledge 19 of the attachment 7 and its upright portion be somewhat greater than a right angle. Also, in order to enable the arm to be swung freely relative to the backing post Without interference between the latching end of rod 15 and the attachment 7, the junction between the ledge 19 and the upright portion is gradually curved.
When the garbage can lid 1 'has been attached to the yoke 4 by the bolt 5 and the ears of the attachment strap 24 have been secured to a suitable support such as the post 6 by bolts or the lag screws 8, the mounting will be ready for use. To afford access to the garbage can the latch rod 15 is pulled away from the attachment 7 by grasping the handle 16 and such handle is then raised to swing the arm 11 upward from the position of FIGURE 1 toward the position of FIGURE 2. If the pull handle 16 is relieved, the compression spring 21 reacting between the arm closure 13 and the washer 22 on the latch rod will force such rod toward the pivoted end of the arm so that the end of such rod will bear against the projection 19. As the arm is swung into the upright position of FIGURE 2, the spring will maintain pressure on the rod to force its projecting end into the latching socket notch 18 in projection 19. Engagement of the bend in handle 16 on rod 15 with the closure 13 at the swinging end of the arm will limit the distance that the latch rod projects into the socket formed by the latch hole 17 or beyond projection 19 when in notch 18.
With the projecting end of the latch rod 15 engaged in the socket notch 18, the arm 11 and garbage can lid 1 will be maintained in the upright position shown in 4 FIGURE 2 until it is desired to close the garbage can.
At such time the handle 16 Will be pulled from the solid line position of FIGURE 2 into the broken line position which will withdraw `the projecting end of the latch rod 15 from the notch 18 of the attachment projection, The arm 11 can then ybe swung about pivot 10 downward so that the lid will be lowered onto the can 2, which should be located at a distance from post 6 corresponding to the spacing of lid 1 from Such post. As the projecting end of the latch rod passes around the bend of the attachment 7, the pull on handle 16 can be relieved so that such latch rod end will engage the attachment plate below the latch socket or hole 17. Further lowering of the arm 11 to place the lid on the can will bring the latch rod 15 into alignment with the socket hole so that the spring 21 may press the projecting end of the rod into its socket. The arm 11 will thus be latched in its lowered position with the lid held firmly on the garbage can and the garbage can thus, in turn, held firmly against being upset or displaced.
