The primary object of the invention is the provision of a stand, for supporting a paint can or a paint tray at a conveniently reached level above a painter's platform, whereby onerous bending to reach the paint container is eliminated, the stand being readily and removably connected to a conventional painters trestle, and being readily adjustable to different positions along the trestle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a stand of the character indicated above, which eliminates the use of bolts, screws, or clamps or other complicated or difficultly handled means for the mounting of the stand on a trestle, by the provision on the stand of opposed cross members, which receive the platform therebetween, and which, when the stand is tilted, relative to the trestle, grip the top and the bottom of the trestle and hold the stand securely in the desired location on the trestle.

Referring in detail to the drawings, T generally designates a conventional form of extensible painters platform, on which a stand S, in accordance with the present invention, is installed.
Ohio 44038 The stand S, which is constructed of angle-iron componcnts. comprises an upwardly tapering V-shaped frame 10, composed of straight side members 12, which have longitudinally disposed flanges l4 and transversely disposed flanges 16. The transversely disposed flanges 16 are similarly tapered, at their upper ends, as indicated at 18. and abutted, and are secured together, in any suitable manner, as by welding.
A fixed lower cross member 20 extends between the lower ends of the frame side members 12, has a vertical flange 22 fixed in suitable manner, to the outer side of the transverse flanges 16 of the side'members, and a horizontal flange 24, suitably fixed to the lower ends of the longitudinal flanges 14 of the side members.
' has bolts 28 extended through the ends of its vertical flange 30, which are adapted to extend through two or more vertically spaced adjustment holes 32, provided in the transverse flanges 16 of the frame side members. The member 26 has a lower horizontal flange 33 extending in the same direction as the longitudinal flanges 14 of the frame side members 12. As indicated in FIGURE 3, the spacing of the upper and lower cross members is somewhat greater than the thickness of the plat-form T, so that when the platform is engaged between these members, the stand S can be tilted to produce holding and supporting engagement of these cross members with the top and bottom, respectively, of the platform T, as shown in FIGURE 2-. The upper cross member 26 is made adjustable to accommodate for trestles of different thickness.
In its operative position on the platform T, the stand S is tilted in the direction of the extension of the longitudinal flanges 14 of its frame side members 12, or to one side of the stand.
At this one side of the stand S, the frame side member flanges 14 are formed, adjacent to their upper ends, with downwardly angled notches 34, which define downwardly directed hooks 36, which are adapted to receive the side wall 38 and the bead 40 of a paint tray 42, so that the tray is supported in a horizontal, accessible position, above the platform T.
For supporting a paint can 44, having a bail handle 46, a shelf 48 is provided, on the said one side of the stand S, on a level spaced downwardly from the notches 34. The shelf 48 has a flat bottom wall 50, preferably having a tapered outer end portion 52, and a side wall 54, which extends around all edges of the bottom wall 50,-
except for the inner edge 56 thereof.
The shelf side wall 54 has extensions 58 reaching beyond the bottom wall edge 56 and engaged with'the outer sides of the longitudinal flanges 14 of the frame side members 12, and are secured thereto, by means of bolts 60. A brace bar 62 is centrally and longitudinally disposed, relative to the shelf 48, is secured, at its upper end, to the underside of the shelf bottom wall 50, at the outer end thereof, as by means of a bolt 63. The lower end of the brace bar is secured to theadjacent side of the vertical flange 64 of the transverse horizontal brace member 66, as by-means of a bolt 68. The member 66 is secured to the adjacent sides of the flanges 14 of the frame side mem bers 12, by bolts 69 through its vertical flange 64. The shelf 48 is angled upwardly and outwardly, relative to the stand S, so that in the tilted position of the stand, the shelf 48 is horizontal.
When the paint can 44 rests upon the shelf 48, its bail handle 46 is brought up over the upper end of the frame 10, and for security, is then engaged beneath a retaining knob 70, which is fixed to and extends laterally from the upper end of the frame. The knob 70 can take the form of a nut.72, fixed to the frame 10, and a bolt 74 threaded into the nut. 1
From the foregoing it will be seen that, when not in use, the stand S can be readily removed from the trestle T, and laid upon the trestle for compact storage, and that either or both are readily portable.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a normally horizontal painters platform having first and second ends, of an upstanding stand, said stand comprising an upwardly-tapered frame having a relatively narrow upper end and a lower end wider than the platform. said frame comprising side members joined together at their upper ends, a lower cross-member extending between and fixed to the lower ends of the side members, an upper cross-member extending between and fixed at the side members, said upper cross-member being located near to and spaced upwardly from the lower cross-member at a distance greater than the thickness of the platform, the platform being engaged between said upper and lower cross-members, the stand being tilted toward the first end of the platform with the cross-members supportably and retainably-engaged with related surfaces of the platform, and pain containersupporting means on the stand frame at a location above the upper cross-member, said supporting means comprising a paint can shelf extending toward said first end of the platform.
2. The combination of claim 1, wherein said shelf has a side wall terminating in extensions secured to the frame side members.

Claims (1)

1. THE COMBINATION WITH A NORMALLY HORIZONTAL PAINTER''S PLATOFRM HAVING FIRST AND SECOND ENDS, OF AN UPSTANDING STAND, SAID STAND COMPRISING AN UPWARDLY-TAPERED FRAME HAVING A RELATIVELY NARROW UPPER END AND A LOWER END WIDER THAN THE PLATFORM, SAID FRAME COMPRISING SIDE MEMBERS JOINED TOGETHER AT THEIR UPPER END AND A LOWER CROSS-MEMBER EXTENDING BETWEEN AND FIXED TO THE LOWER ENDS OF THE SIDE MEMBERS, AN UPPER CROSS-MEMBER EXTENDING BETWEEN AND FIXED AT THE SIDE MEMBERS, SAID UPPER CROSS-MEMBER BEING LOCATED NEAR TO AND SPACED UPWARDLY FROM TH LOWER CROSS-MEMBER AT A DISTANCE GREATER THAN THE THICKNESS OF THE PLATFORM, THE PLATFORM BEING ENGAGED BETWEEN SAID UPPER AND LOWER CROSS-MEMBERS, THE STAND BEING TILTED TOWARD THE FIRT END OF THE PLATFORM WITH THE CROSS-MEMBER SUPPORTABLY AND RETAINABLY-ENGAGED
