(Cl. 229-28) This invention relates in general to new and useful improvements in the container art, and more particularly to a novel carton for use with fruits, vegetables and like articles having generally a spherical shape.

This invention is primarily directed to a carton suitable for the packing of a dozen oranges. However, the spirit of the invention is not so limited in that the carton could be used equally as well for packaging other fruits, including pears, apples, etc., as well as vegetables, including tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, onions, etc., and nonedible articles including balls of string, yarn, Christmas tree balls, etc.

A primary object of this invention is to provide a novel carton which is formed in two identical sections with the sections being connected together by a handle-like portion in the form of a connecting strap, the connecting strap being readily severable whereby the two sections of the carton may be separated, and one-half of the carton may be sold independently of the other half.

Another object of this invention is to provide a novel, readily handleable carton for use in packaging fruits, vegetables and like articles, wherein the carton is divided into two halves disposed in side-by-side relation and being connected together by means of a connecting strap with the sections being disposed in depending relation from the connecting strap, and the connecting strap being provided with suitable holes so as to facilitate the carrying of the filled carton utilizing the connecting strap.

Another object of this invention is to provide a novel and simple one-piece carton for carrying a plurality of articles, the cart-on being formed in sections, 'with each of the sections being shaped to define individual compartments for articles, and the two sections being readily releasably connected together by means of a readily dividable handle whereby the contents of the carton may be sold as a unit, or the carton divided into halves so that one-half of the packaged quantity of the articles may be sold as a unit, as desired.

A further object of this invention is to provide a onepiece carton for the packagingof oranges and other fruit, vegetables and like articles, the carton being divided into two sections disposed in back-to-back relation and having a pair of connecting straps extending therebetween, each section including a face panel having disposed along the side edges thereof side panels, partial bottom panels being connected to the side panels, and a partition panel being connected to each of the bottom panels, the partitions panels being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate the side panels and serving to longitudinally divide the respective section, and there being end panels connected to the face panel and interlocked with the partition panels to complete each section.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a novel carton in which a predescribed number of articles may be packaged, for example, one dozen, and the carton is divided into two sections which are disposed in side-by side relation and connected together in depending relation with respect to connecting tabs which serve as handles, the connecting tabs being readily severable, whereby one half of the desired number of the products may be dispensed at a time.

Yet another object of this invention is to provide a novel one-piece blank for forming a carton, the blank being provided with fold lines and cut lines of an arrangement to permit the folding thereof into a carton having two sections connected together by connecting straps, and the blank being symmetrical about both longitudinal and transverse center lines.

Another object of this invention is to provide a novel blank for the formation of a one-piece double section carton wherein the sections of the carton are connected together by connecting straps, the blank being of a simple construction and having a rectangular outline, the blank being divided into two individual sections connected together by the connecting straps, and the two sections being identical.

With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the nature of the invention will be more clearly understood by reference to the following detailed description, the appended claims and the several views illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that there is illustrated in FIGURE 1 a carton formed in accordance with this invention, the carton being generally referred to by the numeral 10. The carton 10 is formed from a one-piece blank, generally referred to by the numeral 11, the blank 11 being shown in FIGURE 6. The details of the blank 11 will be first described in that the structural details of the carton 10 may be more readily understood after a description of the blank 11.

The blank 11 is of a generally rectangular outline and is preferably formed of paperboard, although it could be formed of other materials. The blank 11 is transversely divided into two identical halves 12 and 13. The two halves 12 and 13 are connected together by a pair of connecting straps 14 which are provided with centrally located weakening lines 15, the weakening lines 15 extending along the transverse axis of the blank 11 and also serving as fold lines for the connecting straps 14. The two halves 12 and 13 being identical, only the blank half 13 will be described in detail hereinafter. It is to be first noted that the blank 11 is symmetrical not only about the transverse center thereof, but also about the longitudinal center thereof. As a result, the blank half 13 is provided with a centrally located face panel portion 16 which is defined by a pair of longitudinally extending fold lines 17 and 18. A pair of side panel portions 19 and 20 are disposed on opposite sides of the face panel portions 16, with the side panel portions 19 being defined by the fold line 17 and a fold line 21 disposed parallel thereto. Another fold line 22, which corresponds to the fold line 21, cooperates with the fold line 18 to define the side panel portion 20. Each of the side panel portions 19 and 20, in the final shaping thereof to define the carton 10, is of a generally C-shaped cross-section and, accordingly, the side panel portion 19 is provided with a pair of longitudinal fold lines 23 disposed intermediate the fold lines 17 and 21, while the side panel portion 20 is provided with a pair of longitudinal fold lines 24 disposed intermediate the fold lines 18 and 22. It is to be noted that the fold line 21 does not extend the full length of the blank half 13 but terminates adjacent the strap 14 associated therewith and is continued by an arcuate out line 25 which intersects the adjacent fold line 23 at the intersection of the fold line 23 with the inner edge of the blank half 13. Similarly, the fold line 22 terminates in an arcuate cut line 26 which corresponds to the cut line 25.

A rear panel portion 27 is disposed adjacent to the side panel portion 19 and is defined along one edge thereof by the fold line 21 and the cut line 25, and along the opposite edge thereof by a fold line 28. A second rear panel portion 29 is disposed outwardly of the side panel portion 20 and has one of the edges thereof defined in part by the fold line 22 and in part by the cut line 26, with the opposite edge of the rear panel portion 29 being defined by a fold line 30. At this time, it is pointed out that the connecting straps 14 are hingedly connected to the rear panel portions 27 and 29 of the two blank halves 12 and 13 along transverse fold lines 31 and due to the provision of the cut lines 25 and 26, the connecting straps 14 are of greater width than the rear panel portions 27 and 29.

The edge portion of the blank half 13 set off by the fold lines 28 and 30 results in the formation of partition panel portions 32 and 33, respectively.

The inner part of the face panel portion 16 is provided with a transversely extending fold line 34 which does not extend the full width of the face panel portion 16 and which terminates at its ends in diverging cut lines 35 which extend to the intersections of the fold lines 17 and 18 with the inner edge of the blank half 13. The cut lines 35, together with the fold line 34, define in part an end panel .portion 36 which projects inwardly beyond the inner end of the face panel portion 16 and which is separated from the corresponding end panel portion 36 of the blank half 12 by an interrupted cut line 37. It is to be noted that the blank halves 12 and 13 are widely separated, with the material from which the blank 11 is formed being removed from therebetween with the exception of the connecting straps 14 and the projecting portions of the end panel portions 36.

The face panel portion 16 is provided adjacent the other end thereof with a transverse fold line 38 and diverging cut lines 39 which correspond to the fold line 34 and the cut lines 35, respectively. The fold lines 39 terminate at the intersections thereof with the fold lines 17 and 18 and the fold line 17 is interrupted by means of a cut line 40, while the fold line 18 is interrupted by means of a cut line 41, the cut lines 40 and 41 being coextensive with the fold lines 17 and 18, respectively, and extending inwardly from the intersections with the cut lines 39. Arcuate cut lines 42 extend in opposed relation from the inner ends of the cut lines 40 and 41 and intersect in a V formation 43. At the apex of the V formation 43, there is provided a longitudinal out line 44. It is to be understood that the fold line 38 and the cut lines 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43 combine to define an end panel portion 45.

Intermediate portions of the face panel portion 16 are provided with additional fold lines 38 and additional cut lines 39 through 44 to define intermediate partition panels 46. The partition panels 46, like the end panel portions 36 and 45, extend between the fold lines 17 and 18.

It is to be noted that the side panel portion 19 is provided with a plurality of openings 47 which extend between the fold lines 23. In a like manner, the side panel portion 20 is provided with a series of openings 48 which extend between the fold lines 24. In addition, the rear panel portion 27 is provided with a plurality of openings 49 which extend between the fold lines 21 and 28, while the rear panel portion 29 is provided with a series of openings 50 which extend between the fold lines 22 and 30. It is also to be noted that the openings in each series of openings are equally spaced and that in addition to the openings in each series of openings being longitudinally aligned, adjacent openings are disposed in transverse alignment and centered along transverse lines disposed substantially halfway between the fold line 34 and/or the fold lines 38.

At this time, it is pointed out that each of the end panel portions 36 is provided with a centrally located V-shaped notch 51 disposed along the longitudinal center line of the blank 11 and terminating in a cut line 52 disposed along the longitudinal center line of the blank 11. In addition, the partition panel portion 32 is provided with a plurality of V-shaped notches 53 in the free side edge thereof, with each notch 53 terminating in a transverse cut line 54 which is aligned with a respective one of the fold lines 34 and 38. Notches 55 similar to the notches 53 are formed in the free side edge of the partition panel portion 33 and terminate in cut lines 56 which extend transversely of the blank 11 and are transversely aligned with the cut lines 54. Additionally, finger receiving openings 57 are formed partially in the connecting straps 14 and partially in the respective ones of the rear panel portions 27 and 29 with the openings 57 interrupting the fold lines 31.

At this time, it is pointed out that since the blank halves 12 and 13 are identical, like numerals will be applied to corresponding parts of the two halves.

When the carton 10 is formed from the blank 11, the end panel portions 37 and 45 and the intermediate partition panel portions 46 are struck from the face panel portions 16 and disposed normal to the plane thereof. Each of the blank halves 12 and 13 are then folded along the numerous longitudinal fold lines thereof, with the partition panel portions 32 and 33 being brought into face-to-face engagement and with the notches of these panel portions interlocking with the notches of the end panel portions and the intermediate partition panel portions. This results in the formation of an elongated carton divided into two halves, generally referred to by the numerals 58 and 59, with the carton half 58 being formed from the blank half 12 and the carton half 59 being formed from the blank half 13. The carton 10 is readily folded along the weakening lines 15 of the connecting straps 14 so that the carton halves 58 and 59 are disposed in back-to-back relation, as best shown in FIG- URE l. The connecting straps 14, which are brought into side-by-side relation during the forming of the carton from the blank 11, may now be readily grasped by inserting ones fingers into and through the finger receiving openings 57 in the connecting straps .14 whereby the carton 10 may be readily carried as a package.

With reference to FIGURE 2, it is pointed out that it may not be desired to purchase the entire contents of the carton 10 at one time. Accordingly, the carton 10 may be readily separated into the individual carton halves 58 and 59 by severing the connecting straps 14 along the weakening lines 15. In this manner, the contents of onehalf of the carton 10 may be dispensed at a time. For example, the carton 10 may contain one dozen oranges, with each carton half 58 and 59 containing one-half dozen oranges. If a person desires to purchase only onehalf dozen oranges, then one-half of the carton 10 is torn off and taken away by that person.

It is to be understood that each of the carton halves 58 and 59 is divided into rows and columns of compartments each intended to receive a single orange, for example. However, at this time, it is again pointed out that the invention is not restricted to the packaging of oranges and that other fruit may be packaged within the carton 10, as well as vegetables and other similarly shaped articles, including nonedible articles. Also, if desired, two or more articles could possibly be packaged into a single compartment.

Reference is now made to FIGURES 3 to 5 in particular, wherein it will be seen that in the completed carton 10, face panels 60 formed by the face panel portions 16 are disposed outermost, side panels 61 formed by the side panel portions 19 and 20 are generally C-shape-d in cross-section and converge rearwardly, rear panels 62 formed by the rear panel portions 27 and 29 converge inwardly and forwardly, and longitudinal partitions 63 formed by the partition panel portions 32 and 33 are disposed in face-to-face relation and divide each of the carton halves 58 and 59 into two longitudinally extending halves.

The rear end of each of the carton halves 58 and 59 is closed by a lower end panel 64 which is formed by the end panel portions 45. At the same time, the upper end of each of the carton halves 58 and 59 is closed by an upper end panel 65 which is formed from the corresponding end panel portions 36. The intermediate partition panel portions 46 are in the form of transverse partitions 66 in each of the carton halves 58 and 59 so that each carton half 58 and 59 constructed from the blank 11 has six compartments, each compartment being referred to by the numeral 67. It is to be understood that the number of the compartments 67 may vary in accordance with the desired capacity of the carton 10.

Reference is now made to FIGURES 1 and 3 in particular wherein it will be seen that when the end panel 64 and the intermediate partitions 66 are struck from the respective ones of the face panels 60, enlarged openings 68 are formed in the face panels in alignment with each of the compartments 67. It will thus be apparent that visual examination of the contents of each compartment 67 may be had through the respective face panel 60, the respective side panel 61 and the respective rear panel 62. Further, the various openings through the carton and into the compartments 67 provide for the necessary ventilation.

In accordance with this invention, the articles packaged within the carton 10, whether the articles be oranges or other articles, are of too large a size to be removed through any of the openings in the carton. Accordingly, while the articles packaged within the carton 10 may be readily viewed, they cannot be individually removed from the carton without opening one of the carton halves 58 and 59. When the articles are being packaged within the carton 10, it is understood that the articles will be packaged therein prior to the completion of the erection of the carton 10.

It will be readily apparent that the carton halves 58 and 59 may be disposed in longitudinal arrangement. Also, because of the provision of the fold lines 31 between the connecting straps 14 and the carton halves 58 and 59, it will be readily apparent that the carton halves 58 and 59, when disposed in longitudinal alignment, may be brought into end-toend engagement with the connecting straps 14 folded therebetween so as to occupy a minimum of space within a large container holding a plurality of the cartons 10.

Due to the particular arrangement of the connecting straps 14, it will be apparent that the connecting straps 14 may be relied upon for ease of carrying of either a complete carton 10, or any one of the two halves thereof. When the carton 10 is intact, the two carton halves 58 and 59 are disposed in back-to-back relation, with the result that each of the carton halves aids in preventing the accidental opening of the other.

Although numerous advantages of the carton have been set forth herein, it is to be understood that many other 6 advantages thereof will become apparent through the use of the carton.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the desired end. However, attention is directed to the fact that variations may be made in the example carton disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being formed from an integral one-piece sheet material blank separated into two substantially tubular sections, and at least one connecting strap projecting axially from and connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, said connecting strap being folded upon itself and defining an integral extension of said two sections.

2. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being formed from an integral one-piece sheet material blank separated into two substantially tubular sections, each of said sections having at least one closure panel adapted to be opened to gain access to articles packaged in said sections, dividers separating each section into individual article receiving compartments, and at least one connecting strap projecting axially beyond the volume defined by said two sections and connecting together said sections whereby to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, said connecting strap being folded upon itself and defining an integral extension of said two sections, said connecting strap being folded upon itself, and said openable closure panels being in opposed face-toface relationship to prevent accidental opening of each of said two sections of the carton and the attended loss of articles packaged therein.

3. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, each of said sections having dividers separating each section into individual article receiving compartments, each of said sections having openings aligned with said compartments whereby articles disposed in said compartments may be inspected, and at least one axially projecting connecting strap connecting together said sections independently of said dividers and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton.

4. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being formed from an integral one-piece sheet material blank separated into two sections, and at least one axially projecting connecting strap connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, said connecting strap being intermediately folded upon itself and having an intermediate weakening line to facilitate the separation of said sections.

5. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being formed from an integral one-piece sheet material blank separated into two tubular sections, said sections having upper and lower end portions, said lower end portions being free and disconnected from each other, said sections being disposed in back-to-back facing abutting relation, and at least one connecting strap integral with and connecting together said sections at said upper end portions, said connecting strap being folded upon itself along a fold line substantially normal to the axes of said two sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton and means along said fold line for facilitating the severance of said handle into two handle portions for carrying said sections individually.

6. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being formed from an integral one-piece sheet material blank separated into two sections, said sections being disposed in back-to-back facing abutting relation, and at least one connecting strap integral with and connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, said oonnecting'strap being intermediately folded upon itself to projcct substantially parallel to an axis of at least one of said two sections and having an intermediate weakening line substantially normal to the axis of at least one of said two sections to facilitate the separation of said sections.

7. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, portions of said sections being disposed in back-to-back facing abutting relation, and at least one connecting strap connecting together said portions and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, said connecting strap being intermediately folded upon 'itself and having an intermediate weakening line spaced axially from said portions to facilitate the separation of said sections, said connecting strap having a grip facilitating opening on each side of said weakening line to facilitate carrying the entire carton and the individual sections separately as desired.

8. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said cart-on being separated into two sections, and at least one connecting strap connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, side panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, and a partition panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panels being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section and said one connecting strap connecting said sections together between said partial rear panels.

9. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, and at least one connecting strap connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, side panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, and a partition panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panels being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section, said sections being disposed in back-toback relation with said rear panels of said sections being in opposed relation.

10. The carton of claim 9 wherein there are two of said connecting straps, and each connecting strap extends between and is integrally connected to aligned ones of said rear panels.

11. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, side panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, at least one axially projecting connecting strap connecting together the partial rear panels of said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton and a partition panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panels being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section, said end panels and said partition panels being cooperatively notched and disposed in interlocked relation.

12. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, side panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, at least one axially projecting connecting strap connecting together the partial rear panels of said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton and a parti- .tion panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panels being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section, and transverse partitions intermediate said end panels further dividing said carton into individual article receiving compartments.

13. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, said panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, at least one axially projecting connecting strap connecting together the partial rear panels of said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton and a partition panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panel-s being disposed in face-to-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section, said sections being disposed in back-to-back relation with said rear panels of said sections being in opposed relation, said connecting strap being intermediately folded upon itself and having an intermediate weakening line to facilitate the separation of said sections.

14. A carton for articles of fruit, vegetables and the like, said carton being separated into two sections, and at least one connecting strap connecting together said sections and being adapted to serve as a handle for carrying said carton, each of said sections including a face panel having side edges and ends, said panels connected to each side edge, a partial rear panel connected to each side panel, and a partition panel secured to each rear panel, said partition panels being disposed in face-t-o-face relation intermediate said side panels and longitudinally dividing the respective section, and transverse end panels at opposite ends of said face panel closing ends of the respective section, said sections being disposed in back-toback relation with said rear panels of said sections being in opposed relation, sa'id connecting strap being intermediately folded upon itself and having an intermediate weakening line to facilitate the separation of said sections, said connecting strap having a grip facilitating opening on each side of said weakening line to facilitate carrying the entire carton and the individual sections separately as desired.

15. A one-piece blank for forming a carton, said blank being rectangular in outline and having transverse cut lines and longitudinal fold lines for facilitating the folding of the blank into a two-section carton with connecting straps between the sections, said blank having longitudinal and transverse center lines, and said blank being symmetrical about both said longitudinal center line and said transverse center line, said blank having longitudinal halves each on a respective side of said transverse line, each of said halves being foldable to form one of said carton sections and each longitudinal half including a central face panel portion, symmetrically arranged longitudinal fold lines on each side of said face panel portion defining on each side of said face panel portion a side panel portion, a rear panel portion, and a partition panel portion, and end panel portions cut from and hingedly connected to said face panel portion.

16. The blank of claim 15 wherein said connecting straps are integrally connected to opposed ends of said rear panel portions.

17. The blank of claim 15 wherein said longitudinal halves are spaced apart and adjacent ones of said end panel portions are in abutting relation.

1.
