FEED-REGULATOR FOR HEMP DRAWING AND SPINNING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,723, dated September 22, 1885.
Appiication filed December 3, 1894.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE DAVIS, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Feed-Regulator for Hemp Drawing and Spinning Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a hemp-drawing machine to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the brake-wheel, the side plate being removed, and the shaft and sleeve being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the brake-wheel and its attachments,taken through the line mm, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to provide feed-regulators for hemp drawing and spinning machines constructed in such a manner as to readily control the delivery of the sliver to the condenser.
The invention relates to a feed-regulator for hemp drawing and spinning machines constructed with the drive-shaft and the drive pulley connected with the condenser-standard by a train of gear-wheels, aloose brake-wheel, and a brake-strap.
The condenser-standard is provided with an arm, and the brake-strap is provided with an arm having a suspended weight and a projecting pin, whereby the said parts are connected and the movements of the condenser-standard are made to control the drivepulley of the machine, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A represents the frame of a hemp-drawing machine. B is the endless chain of gill-pins, by which the sliver is delivered or fed to the condenser O. The condenser O is attached to the upper end of a standard, D, the lower end of which is hinged to a bracket or arm, E, at tached to the frame A or to some other suitable support. The condenser ()is held against the pull of the sliver by a spring, F, attached at one end to the standard D, and at the other end to the frame A, and its movement or play is limited by aslotted stop, G, attached to the said frame A, and through the slot of which the said standard D passes.

The machine is driven from any convenient power by an endless belt, H, which passes around a pulley, I, rigidly attached to one end of the shaft J.
Upon the shaft J and side by side are placed two unequal gear-wheels, K L, the hubs of which are made long and project in opposite directions to serve as bearings for the hollow bral e-wheel M. The hub of the larger gearwheel K is secured, by a set -screw, N, or other suitable means, to the shaft J, so as to be carried around by and with the said shaft in its revolution. The teeth of the gear-wheel K mesh into the teeth of the gear-wheel O, which is made long and journaled on a stud or pin within the shell. The wheel 0 also meshes with a gear-wheel, P, journaled within the shell, which meshes in turn with the gearwheel L.
To the outer end of the hub of the gear-wheel L, at the outer side of the brake-wheel M, is rigidly attached a pulley, Q, around which passes an endless belt, R, which also passes around a pulley, S, attached to the driveroller T of the endless chain 13 of gill-pins.
Upon the face of the brake-wheel M rests a brake strap, U, one end of which is hinged to a standard, V, or other support attached to the frame A. The other end of the brakestrap U has a horizontallyprojecting arm,VV, formed upon or attached to it, which arm is provided with a number of perforations or notches to receive the suspending-link of the weight X, so that the said weight can be adj usted farther from or closer to the brakewheel M, according as it is required to have the said weight X apply the brake with more or less force.
To the outer end of the arm WV is attached, or upon it is formed, a pin,Y, which projects laterally above an arm, Z, attached to or formed upon the condenser-standard D.
The weight X is designed to be of sufficient gravity to hold the brake-wheel M stationary against the driving friction of the gear-wheels connected with it, so that the shaft J and the gear-wheel K, by means of the gear-wheels O P, will drive the gear-wheel and pulley L Q, and thus give motion to the machine. With this construction, should the sliver become too large and force back the condenser O, the backward movement of the standard D will cause the arm Z to act against the pin Y and raise the brake-strap U, releasing the brakewheel M. Then, as the friction of the said brakewheel M upon its bearings is less than the force required to turn the gear-wheel L and pulley Q and drive.t-he machine, the brakewheel M will turn the gear-wheel P, traveling around the gear-wheel L instead of turning it. As the change of the sliver in size is usually small, the outward movement of the condenser G will seldom be'sufficient to fully release the brake-wheel M, so that the effect will be to slow the machine more or less, as there may be more or less increase in the size of the sliver.
V With this construction the pulley I will alclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination,with the drive-shaft J, the loose brake-shell N, the gear-wheel K,
fixed to the drive-shaft, the loose gear L, the pulley Q, connected therewith, and the gears O P, connecting the said gears K L, of the condenser-standard, the inclined arm Z thereon, and thepivoted brakestrap U,having a pin,Y, resting on the said inclined arm, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the condenserstandard D and the inclined arm W thereon, of a brake-wheel, adrive-shaft therefor, a pivoted brake-strap, and a pin on the brake-strap resting on the said inclined arm, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the condenserstandard D and the inclined arm Z thereon, of the drive-shaft J, the ibrake-wheel M, the brake-strap U, having a horizontally-projecting arm, W, provided with a series of apertures, and a pin, Y, and the weight X, substantially as set forth.
