Definitions

  • the invention deals in a method of making sliders of this type and kind which will permit assembly of the scoops of the stringers with the slider, thereby eliminating conventional joining methods of assembling sliders with separable fasteners, so as to be able to permit for automation for this operation.
  • the invention deals with a method of forming sliders of the character defined, wherein one or both walls of the slider include side flanges retaining the scoops in operative engagement with the slider when assembled therewith in accordance with my method.
  • FIG. 1 is a side view of one form of slider made according to my invention, preparatory to assemblage of the slider with scoops of stringers and attachment of a pull therewith.
  • FIG. 2 is a plan view of the slider shown in FIG. 1, illustrating the cores used in formation of the slider, parts of the construction being broken away and in section.
  • FIG. 3 is a section on the line 33 of FIG. 2.
  • FIG. 4 is a partial section on the broken line 4-4 of FIG. 2 illustrating the slider shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
  • FIG. 4a is a broken section substantially on the same line showing a modified form of slider.
  • FIG. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the method of assembling the scoops with a slider, such as shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 4 of the drawing;
  • FIG. 5a is a view, similar to FIG. 5, showing the method of assembling scoops with a slider as shown in FIG. 4a.
  • the slider body consists of walls and 11 joined and spaced at the wide end of the slider in a connecting frog or web 12, generally of the contour illustrated in dotted lines in FIG. 2.
  • the wall 10 has side flanges 13, as clearly noted in FIG. 2, and one of which is partly shown in section in said figure.
  • the wall 10 also has projecting from the outer surface thereof a yoke-shaped member or clambucket 14, in the rounded portion 15 of which the pivot of a pull is adapted to be retained by bending the sides 16 inwardly in final formation of the slider. No pull is shown, as it forms no direct part of this invention.
  • the wall 10 is also preferably formed with an aperture 17 for reception of a lock element commonly employed on a pull.
  • two cores 18 and 19 are employed, the core 19 having a long tongue portion 20, having a V-recess 21 in its free end in partial formation Patented August 16, 1966 ice of the web 12; whereas, the core 18 is recessed, as at 22, to receive the tongue 20, as clearly indicated by the sectional portions of the slider illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing.
  • the two cores collectively form the channel or channels of the slider body and, considering FIG. 3 of the drawing, it will appear that the cores 18 and 19 have surfaces 18, 19' to form the wall 11 with outwardly flared sides, as indicated at 11' in FIG. 3 of the drawing.
  • This construction provides between 23 of the flanges 13 and the inner surface 24 of the offset walls 11' a clearance space suflicient for 'reception of scoops of a fastener stringer such, for example, as the scoop 25 on the stringer 26 illustrated in FIG. 5 of the drawing, in which figure the flare 11' of the wall 11 is indicated in dot-dash lines, preparatory to compressing 11' into its scoop retaining position, as shown in section in FIG. 5, this operation being performed by a punch 27 with the slider arranged upon a suitable support or anvil 28.
  • the core 18 has a cross-sectional contour, such as illustrated in FIG. 4 of the drawing, in formation of the wall 10 and the wall 11 in its flared state.
  • the broken section line 44 is to be kept in mind.
  • FIG. 4a and FIG. 5a I have shown the formation of a modified form of slider, in which 29 is a wall, similar to the wall 10, 30 a wall, generally similar to the wall 11, with the exception that 30 includes a flanged side, as at 31, and at 32 is shown part of the connecting web.
  • a core generally simliar to the core 19
  • a core similar to 18, will be modified in contour and such a core is indicated, in part, at 33 in FIG. 4a of the drawing.
  • This core is modified 'to the extent of forming the flange 31 and it will be apparent that a portion of the core 19 at the narrow end of the slider will be correspondingly fonmed.
  • the space between the inner edge 34 of the flange 31 and the edge 35 on the flange of the wall 29 will provide the admission passag for free positioning of a scoop, such as the scoop 25' of FIG.
  • FIG. 5a in the channels of the slider body, as diagrammatically illustrated, in part, in FIG. 5a; whereupon, a punch 27', similar to 27, in conjunction with 28', similar to 28, are utilized in compressing the wall 30 from the sectional position of FIG. 5a to the dot-dash position shown in said figure, as and when the scoop 25 has been positioned in the channel or channels of the slider body.
  • the method of forming a slider body to facilitate attachment of coupled stringers therewith and in compressing flared wall portions of the slider body in retaining the scoops of stringers against displacement from the slider body which comprises casting a slider body having walls spaced and joined by a web at a wide end portion of the slider body with one wall flared with respect to the opposed Wall to form wide admission passages at sides of the slider body for reception of scoops of separable fastener stringers, positioning the scoops of a pair of stringers in and between the walls of the slider body, and then compressing said flared wall to retain the scoops of the stringers against displacement firorn the slider body.
  • both walls of th slider body include side flanges.
  • the method of forming a slider body to facilitate attachment of coupled stringers therewith and in compressing flared wall portions of the slider body in retaining the scoops of stringers against displacement from the slider body which comprises [forming a slider body having walls spaced and joined by a web at a wide end portion of the slider body with one wall flared with respect to the opposed wall to form wide admission passages at sides of the slider body for reception of scoops of separable fastener stringers, positioning the scoops of a pair of stringers in and between the walls of the slider body, and then compressing said flared Wall to retain the scoops of the stringers against displacement from the slider body.
