SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 326,597, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed October 13, 1884. No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY G. SERGEANT, of the city and county ot New York, in the State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Rock-Drills and other Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates -in part to the devices employed for cushioning the blow of the piston upon either cylinder-head of a rook drill, whereby greater simplicity, durability, and efficiency are secured than in rock-drills heretofore used.
Theinvention also relates to a novel construed tion and combination of parts for rotating the piston, piston-rod, and drill, as hereinafter described, whereby simplicityT of construction and certainty of operation are secured.
The invention also relates to a valve of novel construction for controlling the admission of actuating-fluid to the drill-cylinder, and which is also applicable to other engines or Inachines, especially those wherein are employed a reciprocating piston working in a cylinder, such as chipping-machines,riveting-machines, and hammers operated by steam or air.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sect-ion ot' a drill embodying my invention, showing it adapted and adjusted for drilling holes at aslightinclination to the perpendicular. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the drill. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the cylinder, and an exterior view of the piston, piston extension, and rotating devices. Fig. is a sectional view on the line 0c x, Fig. 3. Fig. l is a side view of the drill lying nearly horizontal. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line *i iii, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line y y, Fig. l. Fig. 7 isa sectional view of a portion of a drill embodying a modification ot' my invention` Fig. 8 is ak sectional view similar to Fig. 6, but on a larger scale, of my improved valve and such parts of the drill-cylinder as are necessary to illustrate this part of the invention, and Fig. 9 is an end view of the valve.
Similar 'letters of reference designate corresponding partsrin all the gures.
A designatesa strongbut light frame, which be made of cast metal, and which in some respects 1s similar to the ordinary drill-backthat is to say, the drill-cylinder ll is afl/'HSM- the drill forward to the frame A is slotted longitudinally at Ait, and the sides of the slot form parallel guides a, to which are fitted gibbed slides b at the back of the cylinder B.
The feed-screw C is iitted to a bearing, o, in the top of the frame A, whereby its lengthwise movement is prevented, and engages a nut, bili, in one of the slides l). On the screw C is a crank or handle, C', and by turning the screw the cylinder may be moved in the back or frame A in a well-known manner.
The back or frame A is broadened near the lower end, and comprises sockets d. in which are fitted points or centers e, which bear on the rock and form two oi' the three bearing points or feet of atripod-support. The points or centers c are secured in place by set-screws e', which have, or may have, pointed or conical heads, as shown best in Fig. 5, and for a purpose hereinafter described. or bearing-point of the tripod-support is furnished by a back brace or leg, hich is pivoted to the drill-back A by means of a bolt, f, which passes through an eye in the head g of the brace, and through lugs or ears f on the back or frame A. The leg or back brace may be set at any angle desired, and may be there clamped by a hand nut, f2, as best shown in Fig. 6. The back-brace is extensible,or capable of elongation and contraction, and, as here shown, consists of an uppertubular section, D, and a lower section, D', sliding telescopically in the -upper section, and secured in any desired relation thereto by means of a collar or band, D2, sliding upon the exterior ot' the tubular brace-section D, and provided with a set-screw, h, the point of which passes through a slot, di, in the tubular section D. The point of the screw h enters a slight depression in the extensible section D of the brace, and hence the band or collar D`Z is caused to slide along the exterior of the tubular section as the section D slides in the interior thereof. Vhen the screw h is tightened, it forces the extensible section D' tightly against the inner side of the tubular section D and draws the band or collar IV tightly against the exterior of the tubular section D.
The three les or bearing-points form an adequate support ier the machine, and ii` Who/1 innig/i 1110i/ ro agent 0f rely lli'gli prati ble therein to feed work. The back or The third foot J, and hence acts as a nut to turn the piston and drill. I
The piston-extension in both examples of my invention has more spiral grooves n than are necessary for the engagement of the lugs on the ring J*, four grooves being here shown. The grooves which are not engaged'by the nutj serve for the passage of steam or motive tluid` to act upon the end of the piston or pistonextension. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire toj secure by Letters Patent, isl l. The combination, with the cylinder, piston, and cylinder-head of a rock-drill, of a; spring for holding the head in place with ai `yielding pressure, consisting of a steel plate bent or deflected betweenits ends and having,k a bearing against the outer side of the head,` substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, with the cylinder, pis@ ton, and cylinder-heads of a rock-drill, ot` bolts connecting the said heads, and a springy interposed between the upper head and the bolt-s, and consisting of a steel plate bent or `deflected between its ends and bearing on the upper head, substantially as herein described.
