(Cl. 49324) This invention relates to windows of the type wherein a sash or vent is mounted in a stationary frame for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis, and more particularly has reference to devices to retain the vent or sash in various open positions and to lock the vent or sash in closed position.
The devices for retaining the vent in various open positions and for locking the same in closed position of the prior art are rather cumbersome and their attachment or installation in the vent and stationary frame is often time consuming. Furthermore, where the devices have to be inserted in notches provided in windows of wooden or .metal construction, the various components of the windows are weakened. Moreover, the prior art devices for retaining the vents of pivoted windows in various open positions and for locking the same in closed position require considerable effort for operation due to large friction forces encountered by reason of the construction of the devices.
The principal object of this invention is to avoid the disadvantages of the prior art devices. 7
Another object of this invention is to provide a mechanism for adjusting a vent or sash, pivoted in a stationary frame to swing about an intermediate horizontal axis, to various open positions and retaining it in said positions, and for locking the vent in closed position wherein the actuating elements of said mechanism are housed in a U- shaped container that is applied along the bottom of the frame and extends upwardly from the bottom along the sides of the frame beneath the pivot and serves as a weathering section between the sash and frame.
A further object of this invention is to provide a mechanism as set forth in the preceding object in which the U- shaped container and weathering section is in the form of a unit removably mounted on the stationary frame of the window.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a mechanism for controlling the position of and for locking in closed position a vent or sash pivotally mounted, which mechanism includes grooved or slotted plates carried by the sides of the vent and a U-shaped unit attached to the frame and equipped with reciprocable rods, carrying means for entering and cooperating with the grooves or slots in the plates, means for guiding the rods, and means for reciprocating the rods.
These and other objects will appear more fully in the following description taken in connection with the annexed drawings.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar parts-are resignated by similar reference numerals, there is shown in FIG. 1 a stationary window frame 1 in which a sash or vent 2 is mounted to pivot about a horizontal axis 3 between the upper and lower portions thereof. The frame and sash shown in FIG. 1 are constructed of wood.
As clearly shown in the drawings, there is mounted on the lower inner portion of the frame 1 a U-shaped weathering section or unit 4 which is of hollow construction as indicated in FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings. The U- shaped weathering section 4, as indicated, has its lower portion 5a extending along the inner bottom portion of the frame 1 and has its vertical legs 5b and 50 extending upwardly along the inner sides of the frame 1. The upwardly extending legs 5b and 5c terminate just below the pivotal axis 3 of the window.
Not only does the U-shaped unit 4 serve as a weathering section or stop for the window, but it also serves as a housing for the actuating mechanism of devices for moving the sash or vent of the window to various opened positions and for locking the window in a closed position.
Slidably mounted within each of the upwardly extending side legs 5b and 5c of the unit 4 are rods 6. The rods 6 are maintained against the inner side walls of the U- shaped housing 4 by means of guides 6a which are secured at various locations within the housing 4, as illustrated in FIG. 7 of the drawings.
Each of the upwardly extending legs 5b and 5c of the housing 4 is provided with slots 10 in the inner wall thereof. These slots are provided near the lower portions of the legs 5b and 5c and also near the upper portions thereof.
Lugs 9 carried by the lower portions of the rods 6 extend through the lower slots 10 in each of the legs 5b and 5c of the U-shaped housing. In addition, lugs 12 are carried by the upper portions of the rods 6 and said lugs 12 extend through slots 10 in the upper portions of the legs 5b and 5c of the U-shaped housing 4.
In the lower central section'Sa of the U-shapedhousing there are provided two rods 7 that are slidably mounted and are guided against the upper wall of the section 5a by means of guides such as the guide 6a shown in FIG. 7.
As illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5, one of the rods 7 extends above a sprocket wheel 16 mounted intermediate the ends of the section 5a of the U-shaped housing. The other rod 7 is provided with an offset portion so that the end of the rod will extend below the sprocket 16 as shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 of the drawings. Each inner end of the rods 7 is provided with a series of spaced openings for cooperating with the cogs on the sprocket wheel 16. Upon rotation of the sprocket wheel 16 by means of the lever 17 carrying the knob 18, the sprocket wheel 16 may, when turned in one direction, move the two rods 7 to draw the same away from the ends of the section 5a. The outer ends of the rods 7 are connected to the lower portions of the upwardly extending rods 6 carried in the legs 5b and 5c of the U-shaped housing by means of a flexible connection indicated by reference numeral 8 in FIGS. 4 and 6 of the drawings. During longitudinal movement of the rods 6 and 7, the flexible section 8 will bend and conform to the corners formed between the lower section 5a and the upwardly extending legs 51) and 5c of the U-shaped housing. For this purpose, the corner portions of the U-shaped housing are provided with guide members 8a which are secured within the housing and serve to maintain the flexible connection sections aligned at all times against the innermost portion of the U-shaped housing.
With the construction just described, it will .be appreciated that by rotating the sprocket wheel 16 in a clockwise direction as shown in FIG. 4 of the drawings, the rods 6 which are mounted for vertical reciprocating motion in the legs 5b and 50 will be moved downwardly, and this will cause the lugs 9 and 12 carried thereby to move downwardly in their slots 10. Upon rotating the sprocket wheel 16 in a counterclockwise direction, the rods 6 and the lugs 9 and 12 carried thereby will be moved upwardly.
As clearly shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 8 of the drawings, there is mounted on each side of the sash or vent 2 a plate 11 provided with a groove or slot 11a which is disposed to receive one of the lugs 9 carried by the rod 6 when said lug is in a position approaching the lower end of its travel. It will be appreciated that when the vent 2 is moved to closed position, the open end of the slot or groove 11a will receive the lug 9; and then upon the lug being moved further downwardly, said lug will engage the lower edge of the slot or groove 11a and not only move the vent 2 to tightly closed position but will eventually engage the lower portion of said slot or groove 11a and thereby lock the vent in closed position.
On each side of the vent or sash, there is also secured a plate 15 which is provided with a stepped groove or slot 14 which opens through the inner edge of the plate 15 to receive a lug 12 carried by the upper portion of oneof the rods 6.
As clearly shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 8, the groove or slot 14 in the plate 15 contains several notches 14a, 14b and 140 in which the lug 12 can engage during its movement vertically so that the vent or sash 2 can be held or maintained at certain desired open ventilating positions, so that the desired ventilation through the window can be effected by the person manipulating the lever 17.
Whereas the plate 11 is near the lower portion of the vent 2 so that when the lug 9 is in locking position the window will be securely held in locked position, on the other hand the plate 15 is mounted as close to the pivot 3 as possible so that slight vertical movement of the lug 12 will effect a proportionately greater angular movement of the vent about its horizontal pivotal axis 3.
Each of the lugs 9 and 11 may be provided with a roller to facilitate movement of the lug into and through the slots or grooves 11a and 14. The plates 11 and 15 are so positioned with respect to the lugs 9 and12 that as the lugs 9 and 12 move upwardly through their respective slots or grooves 11a and 14, which serve as guides or tracks, the vent will first be unlocked and further upward movement will tend to shift the vent about its axis toward open position. The slot or groove 11a in plate 11 is so disposed that as the lugs move upwardly and the vent is opened, the lug 9 can leave the slot 11a and further upward movement of the lugs 12 will continue to move the vent 2 to further opened position. Due to the construction of the slot or groove 14 in the form of notches 14a, 14b and 140, a series of steps are provided whereby the vent can be opened a predetermined amount and be retained in said predetermined open position by means of the lug .12 engaging in the portions of slot 14.
In most instances it will be found that only a limited amount of opening of the vent 2 is necessary. When it is desired to free the lug 12 from the slot 14 so as to enable the vent to be swung further about its pivotal axis, the lever 17 is moved to bring the lug to the position whereby it will lie in the open mouth of slot 14. After the vent or sash has been swung to a completely opened position or position to enable cleaning of the exterior surface of the glass, then the vent or sash is swung about its axis 3 to bring the groove 14 again into register with the lug 12 and, by shifting the lever in the appropriate direction, the vent is moved through a series of positions bringing it to its closed position. During movement to its closed position, the slot 11a will register with the lug 9 to enable the lug to enter this slot, and continued movement of the lever 17 in the appropriate direction will fully close and securely lock the vent in closed position.
While the foregoing description pertains to a wooden sash and frame construction, the present invention is equally applicable to a metal window sash and frame construction. Such a construction is shown in FIG. 9 of the drawings wherein the vent or sash comprises an outside vent 2a and an inside vent 2b which are made of metal which is either formed or extruded, and the inner and outer vents move as a unit to swing about a horizontal pivotal axis within a metal frame formed of sections 1a and 1b. In this instance, the weathering section has been designated by reference numeral 4 and is associated with the stationary frame 1a, 1b. In the metal sash and frame construction, the operating mechanism is incorporated within the U-shaped weathering section 4' as in the case of the wooden structure shown in FIGS. 1-8. Furthermore, the plates 11 and 15 may be attached to the sides of the metal sash or vent 2b as in the case of the Wooden sash and window construction.
While two plates have been shown and described for the tracks 11a and 14, these tracks may be embodied in a single plate on each side of the vent.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that the present invention provides a construction wherein the vent between closed locked position and an open position alfording adequate ventilation will be under control of an actuating lever at all times. Furthermore, by reason of the simplified construction of the weathering section which houses the actuating mechanism of the positioncontrolling and locking device, the assembly and installation of windows constructed in accordance with the present invention will be expedited.

A window construction comprising a stationary frame and a vent mounted in said frame for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis intermediate the upper and lower portions of the window, a U-shaped unit extending along the bottom of the frame and up the sides thereof serving as a weathering section between the frame and vent, track-carrying means mounted on the sides of the two lugs on each rod engaging with said position-adjusting and -maintaining tracks to swing the vent about said axis, a second of said two lugs on each said rod cooperating with the closing and locking tracks to engage in said closing and locking tracks when the vent is adjacent to closed position, so that as said displacing means are actuated to reciprocate said rods in one direction vertically, said first lugs will cooperate with said position-adjusting and -maintaining tracks to swing the vent toward open position and said second lugs will leave said closing and locking tracks, and in the other direction of vertical reciprocation of said rods said first lugs will swing the vent toward closed position and said second lugs will enter said closing and locking tracks and lock the vent in closed position with a wedge action.
2. A construction according to claim 1, in which said position-adjusting and -maintaining tracks are stepped whereby said first lugs maintain said vent in any one of a plurality of predetermined vertically swung positions which are distinctively different from each other.

Claims (1)

1. A WINDOW CONSTRUCTION COMPRISING A STATIONARY FRAME AND A VENT MOUNTED IN SAID FOR PIVOTAL MOVEMENT ABOUT A HORIZONTAL AXIS INTERMEDIATE THE UPPER AND LOWER PORTIONS OF THE WINDOW, A U-SHAPED UNIT EXTENDING ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE FRAME AND UP THE SIDES THEREOF SERVING AS A WEATHERING SECTION BETWEEN THE FRAME AND VENT, TRACK-CARRYING MEANS MOUNTED ON THE SIDES OF THE VENT BELOW THE PIVOTAL AXIS AND PROVIDED WITH GUIDE TRACKS, SAID GUIDE TRACKS COMPRISING POSITION-ADJUSTING AND -MAINTAINING TRACKS ADJACENT SAID PIVOTAL AXIS AND CLOSING AND LOCKING TRACKS REMOTE FROM SAID PIVOTAL AXIS, MEANS CARRIED BY SAID U-SHAPED UNIT FOR COOPERATING WITH THE GUIDE TRACKS FOR DISPLACING SAID VENT ABOUT ITS PIVOTAL AXIS AND SECURING IT IN LOCKED POSITION, SAID DISPLACING MEANS COMPRISING VERTICALLY EXTENDING RODS EACH HAVING TWO VERTICALLY SPACED LUGS THEREON, MEANS FOR SIMULTANEOUSLY VERTICALLY RECIPROCATING SAID RODS, A FIRST OF SAID TWO LUGS ON EACH ROD ENGAGING WITH SAID POSITION-ADJUSTING AND -MAINTAINING TRACKS TO SWING THE VENT ABOUT SAID AXIS, A SECOND OF SAID TWO LUGS ON EACH SAID ROD COOPERATING WITH THE CLOSING AND LOCKING TRACKS TO ENGAGE IN SAID CLOSING AND LOCKING TRACKS WHEN THE VENT IS ADJACENT TO CLOSED POSITION, SO THAT AS SAID DISPLACING MEANS ARE ACTUATED TO RECIPROCATE SAID RODS IN ONE DIRECTION VERTICALLY, SAID FIRST LUGS WILL COOPERATE WITH SAID POSITION-ADJUSTING AND -MAINTAINING TRACKS TO SWING THE VENT TOWARD OPEN POSITION AND SAID SECOND LUGS WILL LEAVE SAID CLOSING AND LOCKING TRACKS, AND IN THE OTHER DIRECTION OF VERTICAL RECIPROCATION OF SAID RODS AND FIRST LUGS WILL SWING THE VENT TOWARD CLOSED POSITION AND SAID SECOND LUGS WILL ENTER SAID CLOSING AND LOCKING TRACKS AND LOCK THE VENT IN CLOSED POSITION WITH A WEDGE ACTION.
