AUTOMATIGEOILEE FEEDER. N. 326,143. i Patented Sept.,l5, 1885Q` UNITED STATES `PATENT OFFICE..
`VVIlliIiIAlMI H. PAGE, OF NORWICH, CONNECTICUT.
AUTOMATIC Boum-FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,143, dated September 15, 1885.
Application filed October 24, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and` useful Improvements in Automatic Boiler- Feeders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acc0mpanying drawings.
My invention relates to boiler-feeders, and` has for its object to automatically supply a steam-boiler with water when the water has fallen below the safetyline, and to so construct the feeding device that the several parts thereof can be readily detached when itis desired to clean the same; and the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially ashereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a boiler-feedcr embodying my improvements, and Figs. 2 and 3 are enlarged details of parts shown in Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, A designates the main chamber of aV boiler-feeder, suitably supported at a point about the height of the water-line of the boiler, and preferably cone-shaped or tapering from front to rear; and B designates the float, also made tapering or cone shaped, for a purpose hereinafter described.
The main chamber is provided, at the upper and lower portions of its front, with supplemental chambers A A, which connect with pipes A3 A4, in communication with the steam and water spaces, respectively, of the boiler, to which they are connected to maintain in the chamber A the same height of water, and steam-pressure to correspond, with that of the boiler. The chamber A is further provided atv its front and rear with openings orapertures C C, the former of which is protected by a cover, C2, secured to the front wall of the chamber A by bolts c c, while the aperture or opening C is closed by a plug, D, fitted therein, as shown.
The plug D is e'Xteriorly screw-threaded, as at d, and is provided with a chamber, E, in
5o which is fitted the end of the feed-water pipe I and an inlet-aperture, G, of smaller diameter than thesaid chamber E, and extending y therefrom through the plug. i
or tapering from front to rear, andat its rear end, is provided witha valve, F, rigidly connected thereto andhinged-to the plug. The
tween lugs d. d', formed with the plug D, and
the apertures in said lugs and valve. The valve F is provided with au upwardly and forwardly projecting arm, f, having a piece of rubber or other elastic material, f2, fitted in theface thereof, which is adapted to bear against the inlet-aperture of the plug, as will be readily understood. i
ered with a ring of rubber, as at h, against which the rubber block f2 of the valve is H designates a gage of any desired or suitable construction, the upper and lower arms of which communicate with the steam and water spaces of the chamber A, to indicate the height of water therein.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the water iu the boiler has fallen below the safetyline, the float B in the chamber A the waterfrom the chamber E of theplug'and supply pipe I to pass through the inlet-aperture of the plug into said chamber A, and thence to the boiler through the pipe A, as will be readily understood.
come iilled with water, and be rendered thereby inoperative or its efficiency seriously impaired. Io enable the float to be readily freed from water and -cleaned is one of the objects of my invention, and 'to this end I so construct the plug D as to permit of its ready disengagement from the main chamber.
When it is desired to cleanthe float, the feed-pipe I is detached from th plug and said plug disconnected from thecharnber and withdrawn therefrom until the valve is brought to valve removed, thereby permitting the lioat to be emptied of the water contained therein and cleaned. It will be observed. that the cone-shaped construction of the float will perheld in place by a cross-pin, e, passing through` will descend and open the valve F, allowingA It frequently occurs that the float will be` view, when the pin e is withdrawn and the- 'Ihe float B is made hollow and cone-shaped lower portion` f, of the valve is fitted be- J If desired, the inlet-apcrture may be covf l adapted to fit to secure a perfectly-tight joint.
IOO
mit its smaller end to be drawn through the aperture C', thereby permitting the Valve to be readily disconnected from the plug and the float to be quickly` and easily cleaned; or, if it is desired to remove the Heat from the chamber A, it can be passed through the aperture C, at the front end thereof, after having been disconnected from the plug.
The supply and feed water pipes and steampipe are provided with valves (not shown) located at suitable points, to cut off the steam and water when the float is to be cleaned.
It will be observed that my invention provides a simple, durable, and efficient automatic boiler-feeder. A
I am aware that it is knot broadly new to provide a boiler-feeder with a float connected by arms or rods ywith a valve to automatically supply a boiler with water, and hence do not claim such construction broadly.
`Modifications in details of construction and form and proportion of parts herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages thereof-as, for instance, other means than that shown for hinging the float to the valve may be employed-and I would therefore have it understood that I hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention7 what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination ofthe cone-shaped chamber and a cone-shaped lloat with an outwardlyremovable plug to which said ioat is hinged, whereby4 the pivotal connection between the plug and ioat can be exposed, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination rof the water-chamber and float With an outward1yremovable plug` having an inlet-aperture to which said float is hinged, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the cone-shaped chamber having supplemental chambers communicating with the steam and the water pipes, said conical chamber having openings in opposite ends thereof, the larger end having a gage and the smaller end an outwardly` removable plug to which the float is hinged and to which the watenpipeis connected, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PAGE.
