Description

FIC).
JOHN ADT, OF TATIGRBURIQ CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,605, dated June 25, 1861.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN ADT, of Vater- I bury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of my invention fitted in a door which is bisected in order to show the device. Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, taken in the line a', Fig. S3. Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the same, taken in the line y, y, Fig. 2. Fig. Ll, a transverse section of the saine, taken in the line z, e, Fig. Fig. .5, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line a, a, Fig. l, and looking upward.
Similar letters of referencepindicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
lThis invention relates to a small lock of simple construction designed for doors of buildings.
rlhe object of the invention is to obtain a lock which may be readily inserted in the door and without cutting away much of the latter, and one which may be constructed with but a 'little amount of' metal and in a very economical manner.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the case of the lock which is formed at its outer end of a hollow cylinder a, having a face plate Z), the back part of the case being formed of two parallel plates c, c, one of which, c, is cast with the cylinder a, and is provided with a longitudinal slot d, shown in Figs. l, 4L, and The other plate c, is cast separately and is secured to the case by a screw e, at one end and a lip -or projection f, at the other end7 the lip j,
fitting in the back part of the cylinder a, and the screw c, passing into a projection g, at the back part of the plate o, see Fig. 5.
B, represents the bolt, the outer part 71 of which is cylindrical and works within the cylindrical part a, of the case A. The inner part z', of the bolt is a rod which is fitted between the plates o, c, and has a lateral pin j, attached which works in the slot cl, of plate c, of the case A. The inner end of the rod i, of the bolt terminates in a U-shaped yoke C, and to the back part of the front part c, of' the bolt a` rod or wire I), is secured, said rod or wire performing the function of a spring and having its outer end resting on a shoulder j', at the outer part of the yoke C, the spring extending entirely across the yoke as shown in Fig. 3.
E, represents a hub which is formed of two circular disks connected by a crossbar Z, near their edges, which bar Z, has a circular button m, on it, said button fitting in the yoke C. The disks 7u, of the hub E, fit in recesses a, a, in the plates c, c, and each disk is provided with a central pin o, and two holes 2), p, to receive the key F, which may be inserted at either side of the door G, the lock being fitted in the door by simply boring a hole therein of a diameter equal to that of cylinder c, of the case, screws g, passing through the face plate o, into the edge of the door.
The bolt B, is shoved out and in by turning the hub E, the button m, acting on yoke C, and the hub E, making a half revolution ateach movement to throw the bolt either outward or inward. The casual movement of the hub E, when the lock is either in a locked or unlocked state is prevented by the spring D.
The pin j, fitting and working in the slot el, of the plate c, of the case A, forms a guide for the bolt, see Figs. 4 and The arrangement is extremely simple and compact the lock being capable of being made so as to be inserted in a three quarter inch hole.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: l
The bolt B, provided with the yoke C, at its inner end in combination with the spring D, and the hub E, having the but-ton fla, attached and fitted `in the yoke C; the above parts being placed in a case A, and all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN ADT.
