Description

(N0 Model.)
J. HUNTER1.
EXPLOSIVE PROJEGTILB. N0. 325,608. Patented Sept. 1, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICEQ EXPLOSIVE PROJECTILE.
SPECIFICATION forming pa.rt of Letters Patent N0. 325,608, c'lated September l, 1885.
Applieation filed July 17, 1884.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be if known that I JAMES HUNTER, a sub-. jeet of tl1e Queen of Great Britain and Irelancl, and a resident of Oamden, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Projeetiles, of which the following is a specification.
The object-ot' my invention is 130 effect the throwing of dynamite shells o1 other explo sive projeetiles withont the use of a speci al gun, and this objeci: I attain in the manner hereinafter sei; forth.
Projeetiles eontaining dynamite, nitro-glycerine ancl other powerful explosives, especially such as are intended to be exploded by coucussion, eannohbe fired from ordinary guns on aecounb of tl1e violent actaion upon the projectile caused by the firing of the charge 0f the gun; hence elubomte and expensive speeial guns have been devised f0r the pnrpose of lhrowing such projectiles. 'lhe use of a spe cial gun I dispense With by connecting the*explosive projeetile loy any suitable medium, such s a cord 01 clmin, tothe shot 0f an Ordi- 1mry gun, so thab when the shob is fired it will carry -bhe explosive projectile wibh ib, the flexible conneetion being preferably provided wit-h a coiled spring or other elastic portion, so as to lessen tl1e shoek upon seid projectile and less en the risk of premature explosion of the sarne.
The gun 1nny be an ordinary field-gnn, siegegun, mortar, o1 even a mnsket 01 llfl@, having a small explosive projecbile connected by a, flexible anti elastic medium to the bullet of the regular cartridge; or Ehe projectile may he conneeted t0 the l1ead of a roeket when this is more available than a gun.
In tl1e accompanying drawing, which shows one way 0f carrying ont my invention, A
by coating 1't With fulminate er igniting comu position held in eontact With an abrading surface, aeross which the fulminate is drawn, so as t0 be ignited when the Shell 00m mences its flighls.
I elaim as my invention- A projectile consisting of a Sh0' adapbed 130 a gun, a'n explosive bomb, und a flexible and elastic conneetion bebween the seid shot und bomb, es Set fo1th.
In testimony whereof I have signed my n2une t0 bhis speeification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
