Description

UNITED STATES ATENT Trice.
VILLIAM Y. THOMAS, OF VEST PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONF-"HIRD TO VILLARD B. CULVER, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,578, dated September l, 1885.
Application filed February 11i, 1885. (No morleh To @ZZ whom t 71mg/ concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Y. THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Pittston, in the county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lubricators, which iinprovement is fully set forth in the following speciiica-tion and accompanying drawings, iu which- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of a lubricator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof in line mx, Fig. l, and a section of a shaft or journal and portion of a pulley or wheel thereon.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two iigures.
My invention consists oi' a lubricator attachable to a pulley, wheel, roller, Ste., and provided with means whereby the centrifugal action is employed to direct the oils to the duct leading to the journal or axle.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a i journal or shaft, and B represents a pulley,
wheel, roller, Src., rotating thereon, said pulley having a duct, C, which receives the oildischarging tube D of the lubricator E, and leads to the surface of thejournal A, so that the oil from the lubricator is directed to said journal..
The lubricator E consists of a casing orbox provided with au inlet or supply nozzle, F, and the discharge or conveying tube D above referred to. rlhe bottom G of the casing is bent upwardly in inverted-V shape, so that the tube D joins the rise of the bottoni at the center thereof.
AWithin the casing is a dedector, H, which consists oi' a plate hinged or pivoted at one end to the bottom or sides of the casing and located above or ovcrhanging the top of the tube D, so as to open and close the same.- The deileotor is adjusted by a screw, J, which is inserted in thc top or cap ofthe easing and secured by a jam-nut, K.
It will be secu that when the pulley rotates in the direction of the arrow the oil in the chamber of the casing on the left side thereof is directed by a centrifugal action up the inclined portion of the bottom of the casing and crowded against the free end of the deiiector 5( H, thus lifting the same and opening the top of the tube D, so that the oil is positively directed into said tube, and so passed through the duct C to the journal to be lubricated, it being seen that the feed of the oil may be reg- 5f ulated with the greatest nicety, and the tendency oi' the oil to be driven by centrifugal action against the cap of the casing and thus away from the top ot' the tube is prevented, owing to the deiiector H, which is located as 6 it is between the cap and bottom of the casing and held as a stop atone end by its hinge or pivot over the tube D, so as to guide the oil to the top of said tube, as has been stated.
As the bottom of the casing is raised from 6 each side to the center, two chambers are formed in said casing, so that a large supply of oil may be provided in the casing, and the oil passes from the right to the left chamber f through the space above the dctlector during 7i the rotation of the pulley, whereby the left chamber is replenished. 1When the lubricator stands upright to any extent or above the center of the pulley, the deiiector closes on the tube D and prevents the oil from leaving the 7 casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A lubricator consisting of a casing at- 8 tachable to a rotating device having a detlector within the same whereby, by centrifugal action, the oil is directed by the detlector to the discharge-pipe or outlet of the casing and thus to the journal or shaft to be lubri- 8 cated, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A lubricator having a easing which is formed with a bottom bent upwardly, and provided with a discharge-tube communicating g with said casing at the upper end of said bottom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A lubricator having a casing provided with a discharge-pipe and a deector Within the casing ovorhanging the pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A iubricator having a dschargC-pipe, a movable defiector Within the same, and an adjusting-screw for said deeotor, substantially as and for the purpose seb forth.
5. In a iubrioator, a casing having a discharge-tube, a delector over the entrance end of said tube, an adjusting-screw for said -ro defieotor, and a jam-nut for said screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
