CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,518, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed July 13, 1885.
.To all whom. it may concern.-
Be i t known that I, AUGUSTINE W. EsLEEcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke,in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic car-couplers; and it has for its obj eat to provide a coupler which shall. be certain in operation, simple in construction, and easily manufactured.
The invention consists in a draw -head formed with the usual bell-mouthed opening for the reception of the coupling-link,and a peculiarly-sha-ped vertical recess extending from the top of the draw-head to the bottom of said opening, in combination with a right-angularly-bent coupling-pin, one arm of which is secured by a fixed pivotal bolt to the forward end of the draw-head, while its other arm swings in the vertical recess, the shape of which permits sufficient upward movement of the pin to clear the link, but not enough to permit its withdrawal from the recess unless detached at its pivotal point.

Fig. 2 is also a longitudinal section of the drawhead and coupling-link, the pin in elevation being pivotally secured to the top of the drawhead. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the couplingpin.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the draw-head, in the forward end of which is formed the usual flaring opening,B, for the reception of the coupling-link G.
Extending from the top of the draw-head to the bottom of opening 13 is a vertical recess, 0, the front wall, 0, of which is at a right angle to the top surface of the draw-head, while the rear wall, 0', has a gradual rearward inclination, thus producing a recess gradually enlarged from the top to its point of intersection with opening B. D represents the coupling-pin, constructed of a bar of suitable metal, preferably rectangular in cross-section, bent at a right angle, thus forming a horizontal arm, (I, and a vertical arm, (1. The lower end of the vertical arm is reduced in thickness on two opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 3, in order to allow it to enter the link; and the horizontal arm at its outer end is perforated, as shown, to receive a pivotbolt, (1. It is of course evident that the pin, instead of being rectangular in cross-section, may be round or of other desirable shape.
In the top of the draw-head is a depression, E, for the reception of the'horizontal arm of the coupling-pin, which is pivotally secured by a fixed pivot-bolt. This depression is just deep enough to allow the upper surface of the pin to lie flush with the top of the draw-head when the pin is down into holding position.
I may, however, dispense with depression E and pivot the horizontalarm of the pininlugs e on top of the draw-head, as shown in Fig. 2. With this construction it is of course necessary that the vertical arm should be somewhat longer than is required when the horizontal arm is pivoted in the depression.
For the purpose of elevating the pin in the act of uncoupling cars, any of the well-known systems of levers adapted to the purpose may be employed, the pin being provided on top with a ring, F, for attachment thereto of such elevating mechanism.
In operation the link in entering the drawhead strikes against the coupling-pin, moving it backward and upward in the are of a circle until it is sufficiently elevated to ride over the end of the link, and after passing that it drops by gravity into the link and takes bearing against the bottom of depression E,or top of draw-head, and also against wallc and offset 1), thus having support at every possible point, whereby the pivot is relieved of all strain.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a draw-head in which is formed an opening for-thereceptionof the coupling-link and a verticalrecess err-- tending from the top of the draw-headto the point of intersection with the rear end of thelink-opening, of a-right-angularly-bentcoupling-pin, one armof which issecured bya fixed.

A'draw-head in which is formed an opening for the reception of the coupling-link, a vertical recess extending from V the. top of the draw-head to the point of intersection with the rear end of the link-opening, the front wallof said recess being at a right angle to the top of the draw-head, and the rear wall having a gradual rearward inclination, and an offset in the lower wall of the link-opening on a line with the front wall of the recess, in combination with a right-angularly-bent couplingpin, one arm of which is secured by a fixed pivot-bolt to the forward end of the draw head,--'andthe other arm of whichoccupies and has a limited upward movement in the said 1 recess,- substantially as described.
