Description

. Wemmel.) I
. J. CLINE.
LADDER HINGE. No. 325,501. l Patente-d Sept.' 1, 1885.
WITNSSES v VEN 0R .2 ATTORNEYS NITED STATES GEORGE J. CLINE, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
STEP-LADDER HlNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,501, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed June 27, 1885.
To a/ZZ whom i may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. CLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladder Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itl appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked hereon, which form a part of this specificaion.
Figure l of the drawingsis a representation of side elevation. Fig. 2 is a section. Fig. 3 is a detail of the hinge.
This invention has relation to hinges which are particularly adapted to be used in the construction of step-ladders; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the top of a step-ladder, and B the rail. C is the leg-brace.
D is a metallic strap, which is usually made of a piece of strap-iron bent at its middle portion to form a loop-bearing at E, and provided with a short strap-brace, F, which is bent outward at right angles, and is perforated at its end, as indicated at G. The arms H H of the strap extend parallel to each other, as shown. Perforations K K are made in the said arms for the passage of the fasteningrivets L, whereby the arms are secured to the sides of the rail at its upper end, and for the. passage of the pivot-pin M.
A groove, N, is usually made in the under (No model.)
side of the top A, in which the upper end of the rail with the attached hingeisseated. The rail is then secured to the top by means of nails or screws, as at S. The short bracestrap F is bent over the edge of the top and secured by a nail or screw, V.
In the loop P, between the rail and the middle bearing, E, of the hinge, the head of the' brace-leg C is pivoted. This brace-leg is so pivoted in the hinge that when it is folded forward it can lie closely upon the rail, and when extended for use it will bear againstthe edge of the bearing E, and will be firmly braced in position thereby.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*n l. The strap-iron bent in loop form and provided with the short brace-strap at the bend, and with the perforations 7c t-,to serve in a step-ladder substantially as specied.
2. The combination, with the top and rails of a step-ladder, of the loop-forni strap D, having the short strap-brace extending over and secured to the edge of said top, and the GEORGE J. CLINE.
