FIRE-ESCAPE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 325,450, dated September 1, 1885.

Application filed April 14, 1885.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL SNYDER, of White Sulphur Springs, in the county of Meagher and Territory of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention consists in the combination, with a Windlass-drum journaled in a frame, of a rope secured on the same, a brake-pulley formed on the drum, a brakeband passed around said pulley, and a rope secured to the brake-band.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved fire-escape. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line as m, Fig. l.

A Windlass-drum, A, is journaled in a frame, 13, and has one end, 0, of its shaft squared to receive a key for turning the drum. On one end of the said drum a brake-pulley, D, is formed, around which a steel brake-band, E, is passed, which has one end secured to the frame 13, and has a rope, F, orwirc secured to the other end.

A rope or band, G, is secured on the drum A and wound on the same, and to the free end of the said rope a belt, H, is secured. The frame B is secured on the floor of the room at the window in such a manner that the top of the frame B and the drum A are about level with or slightly above the window-sill J. The free end of the brake-band E projects toward or over the sill J, as shown.

In using the fire-escape the person secures the belt II around his body and grasps the brake'rope F and steps out of the window. Under the action of the persons weight the rope G unwinds, the revolution of the drum being controlled by the brake-band E. When the person arrives at the ground he unfa-stens the belt and the ropeG is wound on the drum and the belt is raised and can be used by another person.

hen the device is not in use, both ropes G and F are in the room. By means of the rope F the descent can be regulated by the descending person, or bya person in the street below, or the brake can be controlled by a person in the room.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. In a fire-escape, the combination, with a frame adapted to be secured inside of a room adjacent toa window, of awindlass-drumjonrnaled in the upper part of the same, a rope secured on the drum, a brake-band passed around the drum, and arope attached to the free end of the band, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. In a fire-escape, the combination, with the stationary frame B, of the Windlass-drum journaled in the upper part of the said frame, the rope G, the belt H, the brake-pulley D, the brakeband E, and the rope F, substantially as herein shown and described.
