FREDERICK H. MEYERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA; MARGARET MEYERS ADMINISTEATRIX OF SAID FREDERICK H. MEYERS, DECEASED.
EMERY AND SAND-PAPER MACHINE FOR DRESSING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,431, dated Septem 885.
(X0 model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, FREDERICK H. Mnvnns, of Philadelphim in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Emery and Sandlaper Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved machine for pressing leather or other material against an emery or sandpaper wheel, or any other abrading-whcel, without injuring the said article.
The invention consists in the combination, with an ahradingwheel, of a pivoted lever, devices for moving it toward the wheel, and a cushioned support on the said lever.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding; parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved emery and sand-paper machine. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same on the line a: a, Fig. l.
The emery -wheel, sandpaper wheel, or other abrading-whcel,A,is rigidly mounted on a shalt, B, jonrnaled in a suitable support, and provided with the fixed and loose beltpulleys G C. The wheel A is arranged above an inclined table, D, provided with a longitudinal slot, E, through which a cushion can be passed, which receives and supports the article to be acted upon by the wheel. The said cushion is held on a lever, F, pivoted on an upright, G, and below the lever F a lever, H, is pivoted in an upright, J, one end of the lever I-I being adapted to act on the lever F, and the other end is connected by a rod, I,
[ with a foot-lever, K, pivoted on the bottom of the frame of the machine. The cushion is preferably formed of leather, but maybe made of any other suitable material. In the machine shown it consists of an endless belt, L, passed over rollers M in frames N N, projecting upward from the lever F, and the frames N being adapted to swing. Itcan be held in place to hold the belttaut by a hook, O, pivoted on the lever F.
The article to be acted upon is placed upon the cushion, and the foot-lever K is pressed down, the lever H acting on the lever F and pressing it upward. The cushion is moved up through the slot E, and the article is pressed against the wheel A. The article, resting on a cushion, can give more or less, and is not heated or burned by the wheel.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combinatiomwith an abrading-wheel, of the table D, having a slot, E, the lever F, rollers, means, substantially as described, for mounting them on lever F, and an endless belt passed over said rollers, and devices for moving the lever F toward the wheel, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with theabrading-whecl A, of the lever F, devices for moving it toward the wheel A, the frames N N, the rollers M, the endless belt L, and the hook O, substantially as herein shown and described.
Jan. 13, 1885.
FREDERICK H. MEYERS.
