PIANO ACTION.
Patented Sept. 1, 1885.
I INVE/VTOR (/mmue M7; By Attorneysv WITNESSES 7 M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK ENGELHARDT, OF NEW? YORK, N. Y.
PIANO-ACTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,401, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed March 9, 1885.
of which the following specification is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in piano-actions, and refers'more particularly to the buttflange of upright pianos.
The invention consists in the elements of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a piano-action embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of my improved butt-flange, showing it connected to the hammer-butt and the damper. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2.
The letter a represents the key of a piano. I) is the bottom rail, 0 thejack, d the hammerbutt, 0 the action-rail, andf the damper, all as usual. The damper carries the butt-flange g, to the forward end of which the hammer-butt is pivoted. Around this pivot the hammerbutt oscillates as the piano is played. The butt flange 9 is made of metal, and is of the form shown in Fig. 2that is to say,it is made in the form of a square plate provided with two projections,'h Ii, at its rear end to straddle the damperf, to which it is pivotally connected. At the front the plate 9 is cut away at the top to form astep,i,against which there is placed a small rigid binding-plate, j. This plate extends forward to the front edge of plate 9.
Beneath plate j the plate 9 is provided with a transverse groove, is, to receive a pivot-pin,
(No model.)
Z. This pin, which is the pivotpin of the hammer-butt, is introduced with its ends into two cheek-pieces, m m, of the han1mer-buttd,forming a slot between them, Fig. 2. The pivot is clasped between plates gj by means of a screw, it, which connects said plates. The pin Z is permanently attached to the hammer-butt,and in order to connect this butt to the butt-flange the screw a is loosened and the pin introduced into the groove 70. The screw n is then tightened up, and the pin is thus locked in position. In order to facilitate the introduction of pin Z between plates 9 j, I prefer to'bevel the front edge of the plate j, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The drawings show the invention applied to an action known as an American-style action. In the French-style action the buttfiange g is placed in an upright position, and is attached to the action-rail e instead of to the damper f. Otherwise the parts remain of the same construction.
This invention may also be applied to grand pianos.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of hammer-butt d and butt-flange q,cut away at the top to form step t, with rigid plate j, fitting against said step and with screw 12, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of hammer-butt d with butt-flange 9, plate j, having beveled front edge, and with screw 02, substantially as shown and described.
FREDERICK ENGELHARDT.
