Description

y 1966 H. LASKIN GOLF STANCE INDICATOR Filed June 26, 1963 OF FLAG? DIRECTION INVENTOR. Harlan Laskm ATTORNEY.
United States Patent 3,253,830 GOLF STANCE INDICATOR Harlan Laskin, Youngstown, Ohio, assignor of one-half to Morris D. De Vorkin, Youngstown, Ohio Filed June 26, 1963, Ser. No. 290,831 1 Claim. (Cl. 273187) This invention relates to a device for improving the game of golf and more particularly to a device for indicating the correct stance of the golfer with respect to the direction in which the golf ball is driven.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive golf stance indicator.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a golf stance indicator that is readily adjustable to meet the individual requirements of a player.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a golf stance indicator that may be used in practice and'in actual play. I
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a golf stance indicator that is verysmall and compact and may be disassembled and carried in the golf club bag of the player.
The golf stance indicator disclosed herein comprises a simple adjustable device that may be laid upon the ground and serve as an indicator of the desired direction in which a golf ball is to be driven. In such position, the golf stance indicator provides a ready indication of the proper positioning of the golfers feet or stance relative to the placement of the golf ball and the device upon being used two or three times by a player may be set by adjusting the ball indicator portion thereof to the particular setting that corresponds to the correct stance of the player with respect to the position of the ball and the desired direction of driving the same. The device is formed in two portions which are quickly assembled or disassembled and the entire device weighs only a few ounces making it easy to carry and inconspicuous in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being the intention to cover all changes and modifications of the example of the invention herein chosen for purposes of the disclosure, which do not constitute departures from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a top plan view of the golf stance indicator With broken lines indicating the position of the feet of the player and the golf ball.
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged cross section'on line 2-2 of FIGURE 1.
By referring to the drawings and FIGURE 1 in particular, it will be seen that the golf stance indicator comprises two elongated hollow body members and 11, the member 10 having a longitudinally extending slot 12 in its upper surface and a right angularly disposed projecting fitting 13 at one of its ends. The projecting fitting 13 is adapted to slidably engage so as to hold the body member 11 in right angular relation to the body member 10 when the device is assembled as seen in FIGURE 1. It will be seen that the adjoining ends of the body members 10 and 11 are cut diagonally and that the projecting fitting ice 13 is preferably an L-shaped member, one portion of which is permanently secured within the end of the body member 10. The friction fit of the hollow body member 11 and the projecting extension 13 are such that the device is held in assembled relation when the parts are engaged but may be readily disengaged so that the device can be carried in the hand or in the players golf club bag. The body member 10 which has the elongated slot 12 in its uppermost surface has indicia thereon comprising a directional arrow 14 which it will be noted is in effect a continuation of the longitudinal extending slot 12. The Words direetion of flag are also applied adjacent the arrow and the golf stance indicator therefore provides the elongated body member 10 with the slot 12 and arrow 14 as a visual indicator of the desired direction in which the golf ball is to be driven; in other words, toward the flag and hole on the green.
In FIGURE 1 broken lines indicate a golf ball 15 as being positioned forwardly onthe body member 10 and directly in front of a movable pointer 16 which is also illustrated in. FIGURE 2 of the drawings. The pointer 16 is pointed at its projecting end 17 and downwardly flanged at its opposite end 18 where the flange thereof engages a longitudinally extending groove 19 formed in the body member 10 in parallel relation to the slot 12. A threaded shaft 20 is attached to a knurled Y nut 21 and-extends through an aperture in the pointer 16 and through the slot 12 and threadably engages a secondary nut 22. Thus, by rotating the knurled nut 21 the pointer 16 may be located or freed as desired so that it can be moved along the slot 12 and the groove 19 and repositioned in whatever location along the body member 10 that is determined by the player.
In using the golf stance indicator, the player assembles the body members 10 and 11, positions the pointer 16 in the indicated location, places it on the ground in position with the pointer 16 indicating the center of the golf ball 15 and in spaced relation thereto and with the directional arrow 14 pointed at the desired objective. The player then positions his left foot alongside the body member 11 and the indicia on the body member 11 serves to remind the player to position the left foot against the inner side of the body member 11. The player then positions his right foot in spaced relation thereto with the toes of both feet in evenly spaced relation to the body member 10. After the pointer 16-of the golf stance indicator has been preferably set in accordance with a desired stance and direction of drive the same conditions and stance will therefore be indicated and recreated and the golf ball when driven will travel to its desired objective. If the golf stance indicator has not been preset, several trial drives Will readily determine the proper positioning of the pointer 16 relative to the players normal stance so that a proper setting can be obtained and used thereafter.
When the ball is driven the device is picked up, the body members 10 and 11 separated and the device positioned in the golf bag or carried in the hand of the player to the next location from which the ball is to be driven where it will be reassembled and reused to again indicate the proper stance relative to the desired direction of drive.
It will thus be seen that of a golf stance indicator has been disclosed which meets the several objects of the invention, and having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A golf stance indicator comprising a pair of elongated body members having a detachable right angular corner construction at one of their ends normally securing one of said body members in right angular relation to the other, one of said body members having a pointer adjustably attached thereto and extending -at right angles therefrom in a direction opposite to that of the other one of said elongated body members, said pointer being movable longitudinally of said body member to which it is attached, said body member carrying sa-id adjustable pointer having a directional arrow longitudinally thereof pointing toward said corner construction, said body member carrying said pointer having a longitudinally extending slot in the upper surface thereof and -a parallel longitudinally extending groove therein spaced with respect to said slot, and wherein said pointer comprises a body member having a downturned flange on one end, said flange engaged .in said groove and a manually separable clamp on said pointer engaged in said slot.
