sPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,356, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed January 15, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNZo NOTEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubrieators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in that class oflubricators known as condensingcup lubricators, and has for its object improvements in the arrangement for refilling the oiltank and for drawing the water therefrom. It has for further objects improvement in con structions, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my lubricator in vertical section.
In constructing my device I prefer to arrange the oil-tank A and the condensing-cup B in line, the one below the other. The condensingcup is surmounted by a nipple, G, with which the steam-pipeD connects. This nipple also has an opening, 0, through which it is connected with the other steam-pipe D, for the purposes presently described.
A tube, F, extends bet-ween the oil-tank and the condenser, and is provided with lateral openings f f The oil-supply pipe G connects with opening f, and is provided at its outer end with a plug, which may be conveniently removed for the purpose of refilling the tank A.
A-tube, H, depends from the condensingchambcr into the oil-tank, and has its lower end arranged close tothc bottom of such tank, as shown. This tube forms the only open communication between the condenser and the oil-tank, and its external diameter is smaller than the opening from the tank A into the tube F, so that oil may pass into tank A from the feed-tube G, and out of such tank through. the pi pc I, which connects with opening f, and conveys the oil to the sight-tube.
The oil-tank has a depending nipple, u, having a central opening formed in line below the tube H. The cut-oil and discharge tube J is (No model.)
turned through the nipple aand adj ustable to and from the bottom of the tube H. The upper end of the tube J is adapted to close the tube H when turned into contact therewith. This tube J is made withalongitudinal opening, j, extending from its lower nearly to its upper end, and is provided below the tank A with a cock, J, by which the opening j may be closed, and the said opening j has lateral ports j, opening out at one or more sides within the oil-tank. A button, J", may be formed or fixed on tube J to enable the turning thereof in order to attain the ends presently described.
The glass sight-tube K is supported at its lower end on the outer end of the pipe 22, through the upper side of which is formed a small opening, 1', for the passage of the oil. A valve, 1, is threaded through the bottom of the pipe I directly below the opening i. The upper end of this valve is fitted to enter the opening i, and regulates the amount of oil passed therethrough or totally cuts off same, and its lower end is suitably adapted for turning. The opening 5, it will be seen,is formed through a threaded nipple, 1 formed on the pipe.
The pipe D is provided directly above the nipple P with a depending threaded nipple, D through which is formed an opening into which the upper end of the glass tube K projects.
Nuts 1) I turn on, respectively, nipples D I", and have plates d t, which fit closely the sides of the tube K.
Stufiing-boxes may be formed by the insertion of packing L between the plates d and i audthe ends ofthe nipples on which they turn.
A plug, 1), is threaded into the pipe D directly above the opening through nipple D, and may be removed for the purpose of removing the tube K, when desired, for the purpose of cleansing or removing the same when broken.
In the pipe D,'between the glass tube K and the nipple O, I form a partition-plate, M, perforated at m near its upper end between the two steam-pipes, whereby a circulation and even pressure of steam are secured, which facilitate the flow of oil out of pipe D to the enginecylinder.
The operation may be described as follows: The steam from pipe D is condensed and accumulates in the chamber 13, and flows thence through pipe H to the bottom of tank A, where it passes under and floats upward the vbody of the oil which passes off in drops up through tube K, which is also filled by condensation with water, and thence the oil isfed in drops, which may be regulated by valve 1 to the steam-cylinder.
When it is desired to draw off the water from cup A prior to refilling same, the valve 1 may be turned up to close openingz' and pre vent the escape of the water from the glass tube. The valve J may be then turned up to close the pipe H, when by opening cock J the water will escape through openings 3'' When the water has passed out of cup A,the cock J may be closed and plug 9 removed and the tank A filled with oil, when, by turning valves 1 and J to the position shown, lubrication will proceed as before.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a lubricator, the combination of the oil-cup, the condensing-chamber, the pipe H, depending from the condensing-chamber into the oil-cup, and the valve J, having openings j j, and cock J, and turned upward through the oil-cup below the pipe H, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the oil-cup and the pipe H, of a valve, J, whereby the discharge of pipe H may be closed, the said valve J being provided with a second valve, J, and adapted to draw the water from the oil-cup when the valve J is open, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of the pipe D, the condenser, the oil-cup, the out feed-pipe through which the oil is conveyed to the cylinder, proper connections between said pipe and the oil-cup, an approximately horizontal pressureequalizing pipe connecting the out feed-pipe and the pipe D, and a partition located in the pressure-equalizing pipe and having an opening, m, substantially as set forth.
4. In a lubricator, the combination of the oil-cup, the condenser. the pipes D D, the pipe I, the sight-tube K, the valve I, and the valve J, having cock J, and openingsj andj, substantially as set forth.
