WAGON-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,355, dated September l, 1885.
Application filed May 12, 1884.

Be it known that I, NELsoN A. NEWTON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at- Kalamazoo, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, liaveinvented new and useful linprovenients injVagon Springs and Gear, of which the followings a specification.
This invention relates to springs and running-gear for vehicles; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a plan view ofniyiniprovcd springs and the adjacent parts of the Wagon-gear. Fig. 2 represents a detail side view, partly in section, of a portion of the gear, showing the manner of attaching one ofthe springs thereto. Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective View of one of the springs, and Fig. represents a bottom view of a part of the wagonbody with the springs attached thereto.
The same letters indicate the same parts in the several gures of the drawings.
A designates the axles of a vehicle, B, the bolster to which the front axle is attached; C, the hlth-Wheel, which allows said front axle to turn independently of said bolster; D, the reach, and D the brace-rods extending from said reach to the rear axle.
I make use of no side hars, but employ in stead four torsionsprings, E, of peculiar construction, two of which are attached to the bolster B and the other two to the rear axle.

Each springis made in one piece throughout, and passes near the bend in the cylindrical rod 9 through a block, f, which is attached to the side pieces oi' the Wagon-body frame I.
Each pair of springs will form at its end of the Wagon an approximately rectangular resilient supporting frame operating by torsional elasticity, and the combined effect of said springs is to etliciently support both sides and all corners of the Wagon-body, thereby making side bars superfluous.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A series of Wagonspringsin combination With the Wagon body and gear, each spring consisting of an outer rod, fr, and an angular inner bar which is attached to said wagonbody, this angular inner bar being composed of a dat longitudinal portion, c, anda Hat lateral portion, e, at right angles thereto, all parts of the spring being in one piece, substantially as described.
