HOUSE-FURNACE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,281, dates. September 1, 1885.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES SPEAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, business address 1016 Market street, Philadelphia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in House- Fnrnaees, of which the following is a specitt cat-ion.

My invention relates to the construction of the dust-fine and its connection with the ashpit and combustionchamber, and in providing a greater convenience for the removal of slate and clinkers from the grate-surface.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the furnace. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the lower head or bottom plate of the combustionchamber. Fig. 3 is a perspec ive view of the same with the dustfiue collar in section. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the top plate of ashpit base. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the same with dust fine collar in section to show the damper.

I construct my furnace with a base-plate, A, ash-pit sides a, ash-pit top plate, B, fire pot O, grate F, fire-pot lining D, dust-flue E, combustion chamber or drum H, lower drumhcad, h, top drum-head, h", upper drum, N, containing air-tubes, smoke-collar K, sheetiron casing M, feed-door h, ash-pit door a, clean-out doors P, for inserting a poker to remove the cinders through the anti-clinker opening S between the grate and fire-pot, dust-damper e, and cold air inlet collar R at the rear of the casing.

I construct the top plate, B, of the ash-pit separate from the sides a, and form in it a (No model.)

ring at I), as a seat or support for the fire-pot. The front of this plate Bis turned or inclined upward at 0 that a person may operate upon the slate and clinkers by means of a poker without stooping to the horizontal line of the said plate. In this inclined front plate is cast a collar, 6*, forming a portion of the dust-fiue E. The lower drum-head, I1, is inclined like a funnel toward the top of the fire-pot, so that the dust and ashes settling on it are easily removed into the firepot, and thence into the ash-pit through the grate. Upon this lower drum-head, h, is cast a collar, 71", and the collars c and 72? are connected by a sheetmetal sleeve, 0", forming an air passage, through which the dust that may rise in the ash-pit chamber is carried to the tire chamber above.

This dust-flue is a self-cleaning one, and does not become choked up, as do those fines which connect the ash-pit with the smokepipe, finally becoming useless unless cleaned out.
