ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN JUDAH GOLDSMITH, OF SARATOGA SPRINGS, NElV YORK.
VENTILATING ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,243, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed December 26, 1894. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,BENJAMIN JUDAH GOLD- SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Saratoga Springs,in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilating Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of ventilating attachments which are designed to be connected to stove-pipes or heating pipes or flues; and it consists in the peculiar construc tion, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which show the preferable forms of my invention, Figure 1 shows a stove with my attachment applied, partly broken away to show the interior. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of part of the attachment; Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the foot thereof. Figs. 4 and 5 show plans of the upper and lower parts of the register, respectively. Fig.6 represents a modification of the foot, partly broken away Fig. 7, a horizontal section of the same.
Referring now to the details of the construction, A represents a T, which may be made of any suitable material, and having secured therein in any approved way, but preferably by riveting,a frustum of a hollow cone, B, from which rises a tube or pipe, 0, perforated at top and provided with a cap, D, secured thereto by stays E, of any suitable material.
The top branch of the T and the side branch thereof are connected to the stove-pipe F and the stove G in the ordinary manner, and to its lower branch is connected a pipe, H, having attached thereto an enlarged portion, I, in the form of a hollow frustum of a cone, below which is a register consisting of the perforated plates K L, below which is a perforated base, M, which may be entire or provided with a door, as indicated in dotted lines, and should preferably have a bottom,N.
The lower plate, L, of the register is provided with a handle, Z, which passes through a slot, 0, in the base M, which slot has a series of notches to receive the handle Z, so that by setting the latter in either of the notches desired the amount of the opening in the register may be accurately gaged.
Instead of the register formed of the plates K L, I may sometimes use the perforated cylinder lvl, surrounding the base M, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 or any other known form of register may be used.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the fire is lighted and a draft created in the stove-pipe and chimney, I open the register, setting the handlelin one of the notches in the slot which experience has shown to be the most suitable to the draft of the chimney, and an immediate draft is created through the pipe 0 by means of the draft caused by the stove, which lastdraft acts (on the principle of the injector) on the air contained in the inner pipe, and thus the cold air and carbonicacid gas or other foul air or gases near the floor are rapidly drawn in through the perforated base M of the ventilator and carried off to the chimney, which causes the pure warmed air to be brought down from above to take its place, whereby the floor or that part of the room near the floor is kept much warmer than it otherwise would be, and thus the feet of the occupants of the room always kept warm and comfortable without having the upper part of the room excessively heated. This will not only cause a great savingof fuel, but will be of great benefit to those of sedentary habits, or the sick and infirm, or those troubled with cold feet, and will be of especial value to young children, who spend so much of their time on the floor in the cold air usually found there, and inhale the foul air there predominating, to the great detriment of their health.
The cap D prevents the'soot or other dust and fine ashes that may be drawn from the fire from passing downward to the base, and then through the perforations into the room, which might otherwise occur from back-drafts under some circumstances. The frustum B serves to connect the pipe 0 to the T, and to form a chamber to receive the soot, dust, and ashes before referred to.
If preferred, the T may be provided with a slide or door, as shown in dotted lines, to take out the material that may accumulate therein, although this is not usually necessary.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it may be varied by the exer: cise of the ordinary skill or good judgment of the mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware of the Patent N 0. 233,962, and make no claim to anything shown therein.
What I claim as new is 1. A ventilating attachment provided with three branches, one of which is connected to the stove, a second extends upward to connect with the stove-pipe, chimney, or fines, and the third extends downward to receive the cold air, and containing a central ventilating-tube open at its bottom, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with stove or other heating apparatus, of a T, one of whose branches connects with the stove or other apparatus, a second fits the stove-pipe, and the third extends downward, and is provided with a vertical ventilating-tube open at its bottom, and connected to said third branch near its bottom, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a stove or other heating apparatus, of a T, one of whose branches connects with said stove or heating apparatus, a second one fits the stove-pipe, and a third extends downward, and is provided with a ventilating-tube connected to a hollow frustum of a cone, whose lower end is fastened to said third branch near the bottom of the same, substantially as described.
4. The ventilating attachment herein described, consisting of a T having one branch adapted to be connected to a stove or other heating apparatus, a second branch adapted to be connected to the off-bearing stove-pipe, a central ventilating-pipe having a cap at its upper end, and an enlarged lower end connected to the lower part of the third branch of the T, the enlarged portion I, connected with the third branch and having at its lower end the register K L, the perforated base M, and abottom, N, allconstructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,in presence of two witnesses, this 24th day of December, 1884.
BENJAMIN JUDAII GOLDSMITH.
