JOSEPH O. HARDNVICK, OF COLORADO CITY, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO EDW'IN S. BUMSTEAD AND JOHN J. CORUM, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, RIDDLE REEVES AND SAMUEL ALSOP, JR., OF DENVER, COLORADO, AND DAVID SCULL, JR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,076, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed April 24, 1684.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosEPH O. HARDWIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Colorado City, county of El Paso, State of C010- rado, have invented certain Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improvements, fully described and claimed hereinaf- 1o ter, in the washingmachine for which Letters Patent No. 274,190 were granted to me March In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, is a vertical section of washing-ma- 1 chine with my improvements; Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a perspective view showing the rear of one of the rubber-frames with the rubber; Fig. 3,
a perspective view of the clothes-holder, and
Fig. 4 a sectional view of the upper bar of one of the rubber frames.
The wash'tub O is of rectangular form, is made by preference of sheet metal, and has a top, 0, forming a permanent part of the tub and of the flanged tray B. Each rubber- 2 5 frame is composed in the present instance of the two bars d d and transverse connectingbars 0, e, and c and each rubber consists of the two bars G G, transverse roundedslats h, and the upper transverse bar, t.
The two bars G G of each rubber are connected at their lower ends to the lower crossbar of a rubber-frame, the connections being in the present instance staples f but other devices which will permit the rubber 5 to be vibrated on the rubber frame may be adopted.
Two springs, m m, are interposed between each rubber and the frame to which it is connected, and the rubber and frame are further 40 connected together at the top by chains in, as
in my former patent.
The clothes-holder shown in Fig. 3, and the mechanism for operating it, are also the same as in my former patent; hence it will suffice therefor to remark here that the clothes to be washed are clamped to the holder, and
(No model.)
the latter reciprocated between the rubbers, between which the clothes are pressed by the springs m.
In the top 0 of the wash-tub there is an oblong opening, 92, which is just wide enough and long enough to permit the withdrawal from the said tub of a rubber-frame and rubher, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, this withdrawal being easily effected in the absence of the clothes-holder from the said opening, after first pressing the rubber and rubber-frame together at the top. For this purpose the boards a in my patent above cited, and which were secured to and remov- 6o able with the rubber-frames, are dispensed with, so that the tops of the said frames can be contracted, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It is important to prevent splashing of the water and suds as far as possible, and for this reason the wash-tub is permanently closed and water-tight at the top, excepting at the opening a, and this is contracted as far as the necessity for the occasional removal of the 7c rubbers and rubber-frames and the introduc tion of the holder and clothes into the tub will permit.
Whatever water may escape through this contracted opening, or may be withdrawn 7 5 with the clothes, will be caught by the flanged tray, and will find its way back into the tub.
It will be noted in referring to Figs. 1 and 4. that the upper bar, 17, of each rubber is so rounded that the two bars present a flaring entrance to the space between the two rubbers, and, as the rounded faces of these bars are subjected to great wear, I face them with sheet metal '20.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the rubber and removable rubber-frames with a wash-tub having a top, 0, forming a permanent part of the tub, and provided with a contracted opening, it, of a size to permit the withdrawal of the rubber and rubber-frames, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a wash-tub having a top, c, forining a permanent part of the tub,
and provided with a contracted opening, at,
with a rubber and rubber-frames, having 5 their upper ends free to be contracted to withdraw said frames from the tub through the opening 12, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
