J. F. THOMAS.
CHAIR SOCKET.
No. 825,026. Patented Aug. 25,1885.
- WITNESSES ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FREEMAN THOMAS, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
CHAIR-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,026, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed March 18, 1884.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES FREEMAN THOM- AS, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved OhairSoc-ket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved screw-socket to be used on furniture for holding the ends of chair-rounds in place in the legs, for holding drawerpulls and knobs in place, and for various like purposes.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofparls, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair having my improved socket. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the socket provided with a locking device on the line to to,
Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line 2 2, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the socket as used on a drawer knob or pull.
On each end of the chair-round A a ferrule, B, is held, and secured in place by a rivet, b, and on the end of the ferrule a screw, 0, is formed.
In the inner surface of each chair-leg D a circular hole, E, is made, and is provided in the sides with two diametrically-opposite grooves, E, which increase in depth from the outer toward the inner end of the hole. A screw-socket is formed of two semi-cylindric a1 sockets, G, having their inner surfaces screw-threaded, and each having a prong or rib, H, on the middle on the outer surface, the outer edges of the said ribs being beveledtl1at is, the height of the rib increases from the outer toward the inner end of the section.
(No model.)
The soeket'sections G are placed in the apertures E, the beveled ribs H passing into the grooves F to prevent the said sections from turning, and then the screws 0 are screwed into the sockets. The screws 0 on the opposite ends of a chair-round must be threaded in inverse directions, so that by screwing the screws into the sockets held in the legs the said legs will be drawn toward each other by the rounds.
The outer end of the ferrule B and the in ner end of the screws 0 are provided with a longitudinal slot, J, through which a metal strip or key, K, is passed, which is secured at its ends to a ring, L, held to slide on the ferrule. After the screw 0 has been screwed in the socket the ring L is pushed toward the socket so that the key K passes in between the socket-sections G, thus preventing the screw from being turned. If the screw is to removed, the key or plate K must first be withdrawn from between the soeketsections G.
If the socket is to be used for drawer pulls or knobs, the knob M is screwed or otherwise fastened on the outer end of the ferrule B, and the ring L forms the rosette for the knob, the socket-sections being held in the drawer N in the same manner as in the chair-legs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of an internally-screwthreaded socket having a notch on its outer end, with a ferrule havingathreaded portion, and a slot extending intoapartof the threads, and a ring having a key mounted loosely upon the ferrule, with the key in the slot of the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES FREEMAN THOMAS.
