COIL RETAINING ARRANGEMENT Filed Sept. 17L 1962 m 7 15. 4. WZT ZNEY United States Patent Office I 3,249,779 Patented May 3, 1966 3,249,779 COIL RETAINING ARRANGEMENT Russell B. Day, Longmeadow, Mass, assignor'to R. E. Phelon Company, Inc., a corporation of Massachusetts Filed Sept. 17, 1962, Ser. No. 223,981 1 Claim. (Cl. 310-153) This invention relates to new and improved fastening means for use in securing and maintaining a coil in operative position such as upon the core structure of a magneto.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fastening device of the type set forth which is both simple and economical in construction as well as simple and eflicient in operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fastening means of the type set forth which is external from the core structure of the device and which, thus, does not limit the amount of iron in that portion of the core structure passing through the center of the coil and, thus, which does not detract from the efiiciency of the core.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and improved device of the type set forth which prevents vibratory motion of the coil either axially or angularly about its center.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved fastening device of the type set forth which is simple and economical in assembly upon the coil and core structure which it maintains in relative positions.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will'be apparent from the following description taken in connec- Although the invention has been shown as applied to a magneto of the flywheel type, such is for purposes of illustration only as the invention will operate equally well on The magneto stator shown also includes the breaker plate 13 having the breaker points 14 mounted thereupon in the conventional manner.
A condenser 15 is likewise mounted upon said breaker plate 13 in the usual manner.
In the invention the said magneto is provided with a pivotally mounted spring clip or fastening member 16 for retaining the coil 12 in operative position on the core structure 10. Said spring clip 16, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention is pivotally connected at one end 16a to the core structure 10 of the magneto through the opening 10a in said core structure 10. Said end 16a could equally well in the present invention, however, be connected to the breaker plate 13 or other part of the magneto or device.
Said spring clip 16 has been designed to be of such a shape that, after the end 16a of said spring clip 16 has been located in said opening 10a in said core structure 10, the free end of said spring clip 16 includes the hook 1611 which rests in the recessed portion of the projection 17a of the coil housing 17 between the body of the coil and raised portion 17b. Through this engagement with the coil housing 17, the spring clip 16 holds the coil 12 firmly in operative position upon the portion 11 of the core structure 10. This unique shape of the spring clip 16 is illus trated in FIGS. 5 and 6.
magnetos and other devices of other types where a coil is employed.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a device embodying the invention; 7
FIG. 2 is a side view of the device shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the device embodying the invention shown in FIG. 1 taken on the side opposite to that shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a top view of the device shown embodying the invention;
FIG. 5 is an end view of the form of invention shown; and
FIG. 6 is a side of the form of invention illustrated.
Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the device shown embodying the invention comprises a magneto stator including a laminated iron core structure 10, said core structure including an opening 10a in one of its arms and having a portion 11 adapted to carry a coil 12 which may be in a cover or housing 17 or the coil may be potted without casing or housing and said coil 12 including a cut-away portion 12a in its center of such dimensions that said portion 11 of the core structure 10 can fit therein with a relatively close fit and with a minimum amount of gap being left between said portion 11 of said core structure 10 and said cut-away portion 12a of said coil 12. This prevents play between the parts.
The coil 12 is enclosed within the coil cover or housing 17. Said coil housing 17 includes a projection 17a; said projection 17a has a raised portion 17b.
The aforementioned positioning of the means for securing the coil 12 to the portion 11 of the core structure 10 external to said portion 11 permits gaid portion 11 to be made 'without any opening; thereby providing as much iron in the core structure as possible. Thus, the fastening means provided by the present invention does not reduce the amount of iron in the core portion passing through the coil and does not detract from the eificiency of the core.
Furthermore, the fastening means provided by the present invention through its aforedescribed manner of construction and attachment to the coil housing 17 prevents vibratory motion of the coil, either axially or angularly about its center.
Thus, it will be seen that I have provided new and improved means for accomplishing all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
1 claim:
A stator assembly for a flywheel magneto having a magnetic core comprised of three legs disposed in the form of an E, a coil enclosed in a core housing which encircles the middle leg of the core, said coil housing being secured on the core by means of a pivotally mounted clip, said clip having one end mounted in one of the outer legs of said core and the opposite end engaging said housing which has a projection to retain said opposite end of the clip.
