A. GELLER ARTIST'S KIT May 3, 1963 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed July 9, 1963 INVENTOR ALAN GELLER MM, GQJQEW ATTORNEYS.
United States Patent 3,249,383 ARTISTS KIT Alan Geller, 233 E. 32nd St., New York, N.Y. Filed July 9, 1963, Ser. No. 293,765 7 Claims. (Cl. 297-135) This invention relates in general to an artists paint kit, and more specifically to an artists paint ensemble complete with easel, stool, palette and means for containing and carrying paints, lbIllSllBS and other painting accessories necessary for painting, which can be readily set up for use or compactly stowed for ease of carrying or storing the same.
Heretofore, artists paint kits generally consisted of a carrying case made of either wood or metal which was constructed and arranged so as to be capable of Carrying or storing merely-the artists paints, brushes, and other tools of his art. Whenever an \antist was required to paint a canvas, as'for example, out-of-doors and away from his studio, it was necessary for him to transport in addition to his paint case, an easel and more than likely a stool in order to complete his ensemble of working equipment. Because easels are cumbersome and bulky in nature, the artist generally had difiiculty in transporting or moving all of his equipment from site to site.
Therefore it is an object of this invention to provide an artists kit complete with easel, stool, palette and means for containing and carrying paints, brushes, and other painting accessories and the like, which can be compactly stowed, stored or carried in a novel wrapper-type carrier which is relatively light in weight, easy to carry and relatively inexpensive to make.
It is another object of this invention to provide a novel antists kit complete with easel, stool, palette and means for containing and carrying paints and brushes wherein structure of the easel is such that it defines a rigid frame structure for the kit.
It is another object of this invention'to provide an artists ensemble complete with easel having telescopically adjustable legs which can be readily extended between retracted and protracted positions, and which can be readily knocked down between operative [and inoperative positions.
It is another object of this invention to provide an antists kit complete with stool which can be readily set up between stowed inoperative position and unstowed operative position simply and quickly without the use of any tools, and which in the stowed position complements the easel so as to define a rigid frame structure for the kit in the stowed position thereof.
It is another object of this invention to provide a novel wrap-around construction formed of foldable material constructed and arranged so as to be readily foldable about the easel and stool in the knockdown position thereof, to define the carrying case whereby the assembled kit can be readily carried with :a maximum of ease and occupying a minimum of space.
It is another object to provide an artists ensemble with a novel palette arrangement constructed and arranged so as to be carried in a pocket formed in the wrapper carrier, and which is constructed and arranged so as to facilitate the folding of the wrapper about the collapsed easel structure in the stowed position of the ensemble and thereby forming a rigid side structure for a portion of the kit.
It is another object to provide an artists kit in which, in the set-up position thereof, the wrapper forrning the carrier may be suspended from the easel in a manner so that the paints and accessories carried thereby are rendered readily accessible to the artist working upon the canvas positioned on the easel.
It is still another object to provide an easel construction which can be readily assembled and disassembled with a maximum of ease and without the use of any tools, and in its knockdown position defines a rigid frame structure for the kit.
Another object of this invention is to provide an easel and stool combination constructed and arranged so that in the respective knockdown position thereof, one can be readily nested within the other so as to define a compact frame structure about which a foldable wrapper is folded to define a compact kit.
Another object is to provide a novel wrapper-type carrier provided with pockets to receive tubes of paint, brushes, and other artist accessories and in which the pockets are located so that they fall between the rigid members of the frame about which the wrapper is folded.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a novel antists kit ensemble including a flaccid wrapper type carrier provided with pockets formed on one surface thereof, the pockets being adapted to receive and hold tubes of paint, brushes, and other artists accessories, the flaccid Wrapper type carrier being adapted to be wrapped around a rigid fnarne formed by the legs of an easel, the pockets lying on the interior of the wrapper in its Wrapped around condition and being protected by the rigid frame formed by the legs of the easel.
The foregoing objects, features, and other advantages are attained by an artists ensemble comprising a sheet of foldable material which is adapted to be wrapped about a rigid frame construction which is defined by the easel and a stool in the respective knockdown positions thereof. In accordance with this invention the inner side of the sheet is provided with means for defining a plurality of pockets for holding the respective tubes of paint, brushes or other painting accessories. Accordingly, the ensemble of this invention is complete with collapsible easel and stool used in conjunction therewith.
The easel comprises a tripod base construction having telescoping legs which are adapted to be extended between protracted operative position and retracted inoperative position with means [for securing the legs in their adjusted extended positions. Means are also provided for bracing the legs in the operative position thereof.
In accordance with this invention means are provided on the sheet whereby the sheet can be suspended from the brace which maintains the tripod base of the easel in erected position so that the paints may be positioned and held in place before the artist, and thereby be rendered readily accessible to him as he is working on the canvas supported thereon.
A collapsible stool is also included on which the artist may be seated and it comprises a frame to which three legs are pivotally connected for movement between operative and inoperative position. A readily removable seat is secured to the upper ends of the respective legs to form the body support. Accordingly, the easel and stool may be each knocked down so that the respective leg portions thereof are disposed parallel and substantially coincident to one another in which the respective legs are triangularly disposed. The arrangement is such that the diameter of the stool legs is greater than that of the tripod legs so that one may be nested in the other in the collapsed position thereof. Thus in the collapsed position of respective easel and stool, these nested within one another form a rigid frame structure. To stow the kit, the collapsed and nested easel and stool are disposed upon a portion of the expanded wrapper and the wrapper in turn folded about the legs of the easel and stool to enwrap the same to define a carrier whereby the easel and stool may be readily transported, the arrangement being such that the respective pockets receiving the paints are disposed within the side spaces between the nested leg structures of the easel and stool. A suitable fastening means is provided for securing the ends of the wrapper about the frame defined by the easel and nested stool. A means forming a pocket on the exterior or outer side of the wrapper is also provided, and it receives the palette. The palette of this invention comprises a plurality of hinged sections to facilitate the folding of the wrapper about the frame structure in the stowed position of the kit. A meansdefining a handle is also provided for facilitating the portage of the stowed kit.
A feature of this invention resides in the provision of a novel artists kit complete with collapsible easel, collapsible stool and the necessary artists accessories which are adapted to be compactly stowed in the inoperative position thereof so as to form a kit which is light in weight, readily portable, andeasy to operate.
Itis another feature of this invention to provide an artists kit in which the structure of the easel and stool utilized in the respective knockdown position thereof defines a rigid frame structure about which a wrapper is folded, the rigid structure protecting the artists paint supplies and accessories positioned within the folds of the wrapper.
Another feature of this invention resides in a novel easel construction which can bereadily assembled and disassembled without the use of any tools, and which easel-is sturdy in construction and simple in operation.
Another feature resides in a unique stool which is adapted to be folded between operative and inoperative position, and which in the inoperative position thereof can be stowed in conjunction. with the collapsed easel to define a rigid frame for the artists kit.
Another feature of this invention resides in the utilizationof the palette as means for reinforcing the side portions of the artists kit of this invention. 1
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent when considered in view of the drawings and description applied thereto in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the artists kit in accordance with this invention;
FIG. 2 illustrates a plan view of the artists kit in its opened position;

Referring to the drawings, there is shown in FIG. 1
the assembled view of the artists kit or ensemble 10 which constitutes the instant invention. In accordance with this invention, the artists kit 10 of FIG. 1 is complete with easel 11, stool 12 on which the artist may be sea-ted while working upon the easel, and all the necessary paints 13, brushes 14 and other artists accessories neatly stowed and compartmentized within the kit 10. In the operative position, the respective component parts of the kit can be readily set up so that every part of it is rendered useful.
In the illustrated embodiment the kit 10 comprises an outer wrapper 15, which can be formed of any flaccid or foldable sheet of material, i.e., any suitable fabric or foldable plastic material. For example, the wrapper 15 defining the kit 10 may be formed-of a rectangular sheet of canvas material. As shown, the wrapper 15 has on its inner surface means for defining a series of pockets 16 adapted to receiveand hold the painting accessories, as for example, the respective tubes 13 of varied colored paints, brushes and the like. While the means defining the respective pockets 16 for containing the tubes of paint 13 may be positioned along the inner side of the wrapper in any desired manner, in the illustrated embodiment a sheet of material, as for example, clear plastic to permit viewing of contents of pockets, is secured to the wrapper sheet 15 to provide a series of loops 16 as best seen in FIG. 3 to define the pockets 16. Pockets 16 maybe open or closed on the ends. The arrangement of thepockets or loops 16 on the inner side of the wrapper issuch that they will fall between the adjacent corners of the rigidvframe structure defining the kit 10 as will be hereinafter described in greater detail.
In the illustrated arrangement one series of pockets 16A is located adjacent one end of the sheet'and another series of pockets 16B at the other end with a series 16C disposed at an intermediate portion of the sheet. Extending longitudinally of the sheet and adapted to be located between the bottom members of the rigid frame structure is another pocket 17 for containing other artists supplies, as for example, brushes 14 and the like. If desired, a flap 17A, adapted to be fastened to the pocket, may be provided so as to prevent the accessories therein from becoming loose therefrom. Suitable fastening means 18 may be provided to secure the flap 17A to the pocket 17.
As best seen in FIG. 2, a slide fastener 19 is secured along the longitudinal edge portion of the wrapper 15. Intermediate the width thereof and adjacent the other longitudinal edge portion of the wrapper 15 is a comple mentary slide fastener 20. The arrangement is such that in the folded position of the wrapper 15, the respective slide fasteners 19, 20 have complementary engaging portions to secure the wrapper 15 in the assembled position thereof, as in FIG. 1. I
In accordance with this invention the kit or ensemble 10 is complete with easel and stool. The easel and stool are specifically constructed and arranged so that-in the knockdown positions thereof, they combine to define a rigid frame structure 21 for the artists kit. As shown in FIGS-2, 3, and 5 to 7, the easel 11 construction comprises a top plate 22' to which are connected brackets 23- which have pivotally connected thereto legs 24, 25, 26 defining a tripod base for the easel. As viewed in FIG. 3, the top plate 22 of the tripod base is hexagonal in plane view and forked brackets 23 are secured thereto. Pinned to each of the brackets 23. is a leg member of the easel. In the illustrated embodiment the respective leg members of the easel comprise telescoping leg sections which are adapted to extend between retracted inoperative position as viewed in FIGS. 2 and 5, and protracted extended position as viewed in FIG. 6. Means in the form of screw clamp 27 is secured to each of the outermost leg members so that the corresponding inner leg member may be retained in its extended position.
Slida'bly connected to two of the legs 24, 26 is a holding means 28 which may be adjust-ably positioned along the length of the outermost section of their respective leg members for receivingg a brace means 29. by which the respective legs may be rigidly positioned in the assembled position of the tripod base. As best seen in FIG. 5 the brace means 29 comprises a T-shaped element in which the stem 29A of the T element is hingedly connected to the crosspiece 29B of the element at a point intermediate the ends thereof so as to define a three-armed brace. A series of spaced notches 29C are formed along the ends of the crosspiece 29B. Thus as seen in FIGSJ6 and 7, in order to brace the respective legs 24,25, 26 of the tripod base in operative position thereof, the holding means 28 are slidably adjusted therealong to a suitable position for accommodating the T-shaped brace.
As seen in FIG. 7, the holding members 28 on two of the legs comprise a U-shaped slide 28A which has threaded in the web or base end thereof a set screw 283 for positioning the slide at a given position along the length of the leg members. An angled pin 28C is inserted through openings formed in the legs of the U-shaped slide28B for embracing the legs of the tripod. According to the invention the pin 28C extends beyond the slide 28B and it is provided with an angle offset at the end thereof.
The other leg 25 of the tripod is provided with an adjustable strap clamp or collar 30 which is tightened about the leg to fix the position thereof by a screw 31 having a flat head 31A. Accordingly the strap clampor collar 30 may be slidably adjusted by simply turning the screw 31.
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 7, the stern 29A of the brace adjacent the free end thereof is provided with a horizontally slotted hole 32 which is adapted to receive the flat head 31A of the screw when the flat head is horizontally disposed. Thus to brace the legs 24, 25, 26 of the tripod in an operative po-sition thereof, the respective holders or slides 28 and the collar strap 30 are adjustably positioned to a common level. The brace 29 is then positioned between the legs 24, 25, 26 of the tripod so that the crosspiece29B is seated on the-pins 28C of the slide 28 fixed to legs 24 and 26 by resting one of the notches 29C on the respective ends' thereof. The stem 29A of the brace 29 is aligned so that the head 31A of the strap clamp screw 31 is received in the slotted opening 32. By turning the flat head 31A vertically or 90 degrees the stem 29A of the brace 29 is fixed to the strap collar. Thus the three points of the brace 29 are fixed relative to the respective legs of the tripod base. With the brace 29 so fixed in position, it will be noted that the respective leg members of the tripod are firmly secured and fixed with respect to one another to provide a stable support for the canvas 33 supported by the easel.
In accordance with this invention, as seen in FIGS. 6 and 7, with the tripod erected in its operative position as described, the sheet 15 containing the respective artists colors and brushes may be suspended therefrom by threading the crosspiece 29B of the T-shaped brace member 29 through the loops 34 connected along the edge portion of the wrapper 15. Thus, as is shown in FIG. 6, the wrapper 15 may be dependently suspended from the cross-arm 29B of the brace to thereby render the colors stored within the respective pockets 16 thereof readily accessible to the artist as he works upon a canvas supported on the tripod.
To suport the canvas 33 upon the tripod base of the easel, a clamping means 35 is provided. As shown in FIG. 5 the clamping means 35 for supporting the canvas 33 upon the easel comprises a bar member 36 which has formed therein a series of holes 36A longitudinally spaced along the length thereof. Pivotally connected to one end of the bar 36 is a C-shaped clamp 37 and the C-clamp -is secured to the bar by a suitable screw and wing nut fastener. Connected intermediate the ends of the bar 36 is a second bar 38 and it is secured thereto by a suit-able fastener, e.g., a suitable screw and wing nut. A C-shaped clamp 39 is connected to the free end of the second bar 38. Thus the bracket 35 is constructed so that it is secured to the top of the tripod with one of the clamps and the other is positioned to engage the top of a canvas 33'. The bottom of the canvas is supported on the extended portion of the angle pins 28C of each of slide members 28, as seen in FIG. 6. In this manner by a simple bracket 35 or adaptor utilized in conjunction with the slides 28 there is provided a stable three point support for a canvas 33.
If desired, non-skid tips may be provided to the by the easel and the stool.
end of the innermost leg membersof the tripod telescoping leg members.
The kit 10 in accordance with this invention also includes a stool 12. In accordance with this invention the stool 12 comprises a substantially triangular brace or frame means 41, the corners or apexes thereof being squared or flat. Accordingly the leg members 42 of the stool 12 are pivotally connected to the frame 41 by means of a pin or pivot 43 about which the respective legs 42 can rotate.
In the illustrated embodiment the respective leg members 42 of the stool 12 are defined by hollow tubular members which have an internal diameter substantially greater than that of the outermost leg member defining the legs of the tripod base. It will be readily noted'that the legs 42 of the stool 12 can be rotated between operative and inoperative position with respect to its frame member so that in the inoperative stowed position the respective legs of the stool are disposed in substantially parallel relationship with the legs being disposed in a triangularly spaced relationship with respect to one another, and that in the assembled erected position of the stool the respective leg members 42 are rotated approximately 45 degrees counter-clockwise with respect to their respective points of pivots 43 so as to define a rigid trilegged stool.
Detachably connected to the upper ends of the respective stool leg members 42 is a seat 44 formed of a fabric material or the like. The seat has provided at the corners thereof a pocket 44A for receiving the upper ends of the respective leg members 42. Thus in the operative position of the stool, the seat. portion receiving the upper end ofthe stool legs limits the rotation of the respective legs about their pivots. As seen in FIG. 8, the stool 12 in the assembled position forms a rigid support capable of sustaining a considerable load. With the easel 11 erected, the stool 12 may be utilized in conjunction therewith so as to provide an artist maximum comfort during a painting session.
In accordance with this invention the entire kit or ensemble 10 including easel, stool, paints, brushes, acces sories and the like can be readily set up or stowed in a minimum of lost time or effort.
As shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the stool 12 in the collapsed position thereof defines a structure in which its respective legs 42 are disposed parallel to one another, and spaced one from another in a triangular relationship. The easel 11 construction, when disassembled, also has its legs 24, 25, 26 pivoted to a position where they extend parallel to one another and likewise disposed in substan tially triangular configuration. Thus both the stool and easel, in the disassembled position thereof, have their respective legs angularly disposed so that the legs of the easel can be received or telescopically nested -within the tubular portions of the stool legs 42, as is clearly evident in FIGS. 2 and 3. As noted in FIG. 2, the top plate 22 of the easel 11 defines one end of a rigid frame structure 21 and the triangular frame 41 of the stool 12 de-' fines the other rigid end structure of the frame 21, with the respective leg members of the easel and stool defining the rigid longitudinal members therebetween. In their knockdown position, the nested easel 11 and stool 12 are positioned on the expanded wrapper 15, as indicated in FIG. 2 so that the pocket 17 containing the brushes is disposed between two of the base legs which define the bottom portion of the rigid frame structure 21 formed The T-shaped brace 29 of the easel 11 and the bracket 35 are folded and disposed between the leg members which define the rigid frame structure 21 and between the top plate 22 and stool frame 41. Therefore with the nested easel 11 and stool 12 disposed in the manner described on the expanded wrapper 15, it will be noted that the wrapper 15 need only be folded about the rigid frame 21, defined, so that the entire kit 10 can be confined within the perimeter of the wrapper 15, as is evident in FIG. 1. With the sheet folded about the rigid frame structure, the slide fasteners 19, are secured to hold the wrapper about the frame. If desired the end portions of the wrapper 15 may be tucked flush against the respective ends of the kit and secured in place by end straps 46 which are provided for this purpose.
If desired a palette 48 may be also included as part of the initial kit. In accordance with this invention as shown in FIG. 9, the palette 48 comprises a substantially rectangular flat member formed of hinged sections. As shown a relatively narrow section 48A has hinged to each longitudinal edge thereof an outer end section 48B, 48C. In accordance with this invention the foldable wrapper 15 is provided on the external surface thereof with a flap 49 to define an open end pocket, as is shown in FIG. 3. With the sheet in its expanded position the palette 48 may be disposed within the pocket 50 and arranged so that the hinged sections 48B, 48C thereof fold with the portions of the wrapper which define two sides of the kit in a manner illustrated in FIG. 3. Thus, the respective hinged sections 48A, 48B, 48C of the palette form a rigid side portion for the kit in the stowed position.
To facilitate portage of the kit described, handle means 51 may be provided. As shown in FIG. 1 the handle means 51' comprises a carrying strap which has a handle grip 52. Connected to each end thereof is a loop 53 through which a wrapping strap 54 is threaded. One end of each wrapping strap 54 is provided with a buckle 55 through which the other end of the wrapping strap may be threaded and secured. From. the foregoing disclosure, it will be noted that the artists kit 10 complete with easel 11, stool 12, palette 48 and the necessary accessory equipment can be. readily set up or stowed in a neat, compact arrangement which'occupies a minimum of space, and which when stowed provides an arrangement which can be easily carried. The specific component parts of the easel and of the stool may be made of lightweight tubular aluminum or the like. Thus the completed carrying kit is light in weight andeasily carried :with one hand. An artist can move all necessary equipment from scene to scene With maximum ease and with minimum effort. The respective components of the artists kit can be readily set up without any tools, and can be readily set up and put away with a minimum of effort and in a minimum of time. It is to be further noted that the outer foldable wrapper 15 not only serves as a means for containing all the necessary artists accessory equipment, but it also serves as a means for maintaining the artists colors in position so as to be readily accessible to him during a painting session.
While the instant invention has been illustrated and described with reference to a particular embodiment thereof, it will be readily understood and appreciated that various modifications and variations thereof may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
