Now referring to the accompanying drawings, especially FIGURES 2 and 3 thereof; a toothed wheel 1 is fixedly on a rotatable upper drive shaft 2 extending as in the conventional manner longitudinally of the machine arm 98 and therewithin, said wheel meshing with a cooperating toothed wheel 3 mounted on a transverse shaft 99 arranged at right angles with the said drive shaft 2 and provided at its front end with a triangular earn 4. This cam 4 is slidably mounted in a recess or groove 101 formed in a rockable link 25, which is pivotally mounted on a connecting link 6 through the intermediary of a pin 7, said latter link 6 being fixed on a supporting shaft 5 by means of a set screw 10 as shown in FIGURE 4, said shaft 5 being pivotally mounted in the machine arm 98. A supporting portion formed integral with the machine arm 98 supports fixedly a supporting shaft 11 fixed thereto by means of a set screw 13, said shaft 11 being received in a recess 104 formed in a frame member 12. A supporting portion 102, which is seen at relatively lower place in FIGURE 3, mounts turnably a link 8 by a pivot 9, also shown in FIGURE 4, a tension coil spring 16 being arranged between the extension 103 of said link 8- and a supporting plate 15, which is fixed by means of a set screw 14 on to said stationary supporting portion 105. An amplitude adjusting link 17 having an engageable portion 106 is fixed by means of a set screw 18 on to said link 8 and a pin 19 is fixed on to said link 17. The said pin 19 slidably engages in a recess 109 formed on operating arm 23, which is fixed by means of set screws 24 on to a connecting rod 20, the latter being in turn pivotally connected by a pivot pin 22 to the conventional needle bar support 21 slidably guiding a needle bar 107. At the inner end of operating arm 23, there is provided a pin 27 fixed thereto, which supports pivotally a rectangular guide piece 26 (see, also FIGURE 7) engaging slidably in a groove 108 formed on said rockable link 25. The said supporting shaft 5 mounts an adjusting link 28 having a curved engageable projection 110, the said link being fixed by means of a set screw 29 to the said connecting link 6 and sewing the adjustment of the needle bar position. There is provided an amplitude adjusting knob or dial 30 on the front wall surface of machine arm 98 as illustrated in FIG- URE l and a turnably mounted hollow shaft 31 is fixed to said dial 30, which shaft is provided with a cam 32 serving for adjustment of the sidewise movement of needle bar 107. The already mentioned engageable portion 106 of said link 17 is urged to engage with the operating surface-of said cam 32. In the boss 112 formed as part of said machine arm 98, a recess 33 is provided and a cylinder 37 is fitted therein, and a slidable pin 36 is arranged in said cylinder 37 and urged outwardly by a compression coil spring 34, as illustrated by phantom lines in FIG- URE 4. A plurality of notches 35, of which only one is shown in FIGURE 4, are formed in the back surface of the amplitude dial 30 for stepwise engagement with said slidable pin 36 upon turning the dial in one or the other direction as desired and to a desired degree for stitch amplitude adjustment. The provision of said back-up spring 34 insures engagement of the any selected one of said notches 35 with the said engageable pin 36. A solid shaft 38 is turnably and centrally mounted in the hollow knob shaft 31 and provided at its inner end with a cam 39 fixed thereon, adapted for adjustment of needle-bar position. The working surface of cam 39 engages the curved projection of said link 28 (see, FIGURES 2 and 4).
As seen from FIGURE 4, a cylindrical piece 40 is partially embedded in the said boss 112 on the machine arm 98 and passes through a large enough opening 111 provided in the said amplitude dial 30 for allowing relative movement between the said both dials 30 and 41 to a substantial degree, said cylindrical piece 40 including therein a slidable pin 43 and a back-up spring 42 for allowing selective engagement in any one of notches 44 formed in the back surface of the said front dial 41.
The operation of the above mentioned stitch-amplitude and needle-bar position adjusting mechanism will be explained in detail hereinbelow:
Upon turning the said stitch amplitude adjusting dial 30 in one or the other direction to a selected degree for obtaining the desired amplitude, the said cam 32 on the inner end of the said outer knob shaft 31 is caused to rotate in unison therewith, thereby the said engaging portion 106 of said link 17 being caused to shift along the cooperating surface of said cam 32 for controlling the amplitude of needle bar, while the said link 8 is correspondingly pivoted about its pivot pin 9 to operate the said link 17, which causes thereby shift of the said pin 27 through the intermediary of said slide piece 26 along said groove 108 for adjusting the zig-zag stitch amplitude in dependence upon the thus modified distance between the said slide 26 and the said pivot pin 7 of said rockable link 6. The thus adjusted rocking motion of said link 6 is transmitted through engagement of said pin 19 on the end of the amplitude adjusting link 17 with said groove 109 of the said operating arm 23 thereto. In this way, the connecting rod 20 makes rocking motion about its pivot pin 7 with the thus preselected amplitude to operate the needle bar 107 in the corresponding manner for lateral oscillation. When it is desired to shift the needle-bar oscillating position, simultaneously with or separately from the above mentioned amplitude adjustment, the said dial 41 is turned manually in one or the other direction. For convenience of easy judgment of the direction as well as the degree of such manipulation, and the thereby attainable lateral shift of the needle, several markings such as L, M and R, which are the abbreviations of Left, Middle and Right, respectively, are represented on the said dial 41, as clearly shown in FIGURE 1. By turning the said dial 41, the said adjusting cam 39 is caused to rotate correspondingly through the intermediary of the said inner shaft 38 carrying the cam thereon. This manipulation operates the said link 28 in the corresponding manner, so that the said connecting link 6 is caused to correspondingly rotate about the said supporting shaft 5, thereby the said pivot pin 7 for both said links 6 and 25 being shifted correspondingly, namely the centre of rocking movement of said rocking link 25 is shifted. It will be clear from the foregoing, that in this case, the position of needle-bar oscillation may be varied accordingly through said operating arm 23, said connecting rod 20 and the like.
In addition to the above mentioned manually adjustable means for controlling the amplitude of stitch and the basic position of needle oscillation, the machine according to the invention is provided further with automatic control means utilizing a plurality of cams and the construction of the control means will be described in detail hereinbelow, with reference to, especially FIGURES 2-4.
A shaft 112 mounted in the said supporting portions 102 of said frame 12 mounts rotatably in turn a camshaft 45, which is provided with a driven gear 47 meshing a pinion 46 mounted on the aforementioned driving shaft 2, thus the said camshaft 45 being driven from the latter shaft 2 at a reduced speed. On the said camshaft 45, amplitude adjusting cams 48-50, needle oscillating position adjusting cams 51-55 and a feed adjusting cam 56 are mounted and fixed in a unit by suitable fixing means not shown so as to rotate in unison. For this purpose, a pin 113 passes through the set of said various cams and is held in position as shown in FIGURE 4. A plurality of cam followers 59 adapted to cooperate one-to-one with the aforementioned set of cams are pivotally supported through a pin 61 (FIGURE 2) by a supporting member 60, respectively.
These members 60 are mounted mechanically in parallel one after another on a supporting shaft 58, which is in turn mounted in the side walls of said machine arm 98.
For the cam followers 59, which cooperate with the said amplitude adjusting cams 48-50, there is provided a U-shaped motion-transmitting member 62. In the similar way, a similarly shaped motion-transmitting member 63 cooperates with the cam followers 59 of the needle-position adjusting cams 51-55. The transmitters 62 and 63 are movably mounted on supporting shaft 64 and said transmitters are formed with a motion-receiving part 115 and 115 adapted to cooperate with the lower ends 116 of cam followers 59.
On the other hand, however, the lower operating end 124 of the single cam follower 59 cooperating with the feed adjusting cam 56 is of a different construction and is pivoted to a link 126 so as to be operatively connected with a feed adjuster 88 as will be described in detail in connection with FIGURE 6.
On the side of said transmitting member 62, one end of a connecting link 65 is pivotally mounted by means of a pivot pin 66, while the opposite end of the link 65 is pivoted by means of a pivot pin '67 to the lower arm portion of said member 8. As shown in FIGURE 9, the said transmitting member 63 is formed with an arm 117, which is provided at .its free end with a roller 68, while a double arm lever 69 is fixedly mounted on said supporting shaft 5, one arm 121 of the said double arm lever 69 acting as working part thereof and kept in sliding engagement with said roller 68. The opposite arm 121 of lever 69 is tensioned by a coil spring 71, the opposite end of which is fixed to a pin 70 fixedly mounted on the machine frame, as illustrated in FIGURE 2.
A shaft 73 is mounted between the bosses 118 and 119 formed on the front and rear walls of said machine arm 98, and a turnable selector member 72, and two selector cams 78 and 79 are supported on the said shaft 73 as shown in FIG. 6. On the other hand, the shaft 73 is provided at its opposite end with a gear 74, which meshes with a further gear 77 fixed on the inner end of rotatable shaft 76 attached to a stitch pattern knob 75, which is arranged outside of the said machine arm 98, as clearly seen from FIGURES 1 and 3.
On the peripheral surface of turnable selector member 72, a plurality of selector projections 97 are fixedly mounted, each of said projections being adapted to act upon an engageable portion 122 formed on each of said supporting members 60 of cam followers 59 of the amplitude adjusting cams 48-50 and needle oscillation position adjusting cams 51-55.
While the said feed adjusting cam 56, which is the outermost cam of the relating cam group on the right of FIGURE 4, is arranged in the same way as any other cam of the group, that it cooperatively engages with the contact part 123 of the related cam follower 59' which is pivotally mounted on a supporting member 60', cam follower 59 thereof has, specifically in this case, a relatively elongated lower arm 124, as seen from FIG- URE 6 which is pivotably connected with one end of a link 126, pivoted by pivot pin 100 at its opposite end to cam follower 96, the latter being pivoted by means of a pivot pin 95 on the machine arm 98.
A bell crank 81 is pivoted by a pivot pin on the said machine arm 98, to the vertically arranged arm 125 of said bellcrank being pivoted a connecting link 83 by pivot pin 82 as its one end and the opposite end of the said link 83 being pivoted by pin 100 to the lower end of said cam follower 96. A supporting ;member 84 is mounted by means of a screw 87 on the free end of the horizontally arranged arm of said bell crank lever 81, as illustrated in FIGURE 6. A further supporting member 96 is fixed to the arm of operating link 89 operatively connected with a feed adjuster 88 as known per se, and a resilient plate 85 is connected to said both supporting members 84 and 9th The link 89 is operatively connected through connecting pin 91, link 92 and a further connecting pin 93 to a conventional bifurcated feed rod 94. On the other hand, the said pivot pin 80 is shown in FIG- URE 6 as eccentrically adapted for adjustment of zero position of said feed adjuster 88.
By manipulating the selector knob 75 for rotating the said attached cylindrical selector member 72 to a desired degree, any selected one of said projections 97 operates through the related supporting member 60 one of said cam followers 59 so as to bring the engageable portion 123 thereof into engagement with any selected amplitude adjusting cam 48-54) corresponding to indicia 1, 2 or 3 shown in FIGURE 8, with any selected needle position adjusting cams 5155 in correspondence to indicia 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8, as the case may be, depending upon the degree of the above mentioned rotation, thus producing any one of selected ornamental stitch patterns as illustrated in the figure. The projections 127, 128, 129 of cam 78 act on portion 122 of supporting member 6t) to shift cam follower 59 to cooperate with cam 56 when knob 75 is in the position 9 in FIG. 8.
On the said knob 75, there are represented a number of representations of stitch patterns, as illustrated in FIG- URE 12, for easy selection of desired ornamental stitching and-for easy manipulation of the said knob for the above mentioned kind of manipulation.
When the operator selects any desired one of stitch patterns represented on the said knob 75 and manipulates the said knob 75, the corresponding amplitude adjusting cam is caused to be engaged by the said corresponding cooperable cam follower 59, while all other cam followers 59 are kept idle.
For example, when it is desired to produce an ornamental stitch pattern designated by 1 in FIGURE 8, upon rotation of the selector knob 75 to a corresponding degree by the operator, said related amplitude adjusting cam 48 is caused to be engaged by said engageable portion 123 of the related cam follower 59 as described herein'above, and thus portion 116 formed on the lower part thereof will act upon the said motion-receiving part 115 of the said cooperating transmitter 62, thereby the latter being caused to oscillate about the said pivot 64 while the machine is running.
This oscillatory movement of said transmitter 62 is transmitted through said connecting link 65 to the said link 8, against the tension provided by said spring 16. The operation of said link 8 is in turn transmitted through already mentioned amplitude adjusting link 17, transversely oscillating link 25, connecting link 6 operating arm 23, connected rod 241 and the like to the needle bar 21 for oscillatory movement thereof.
By manipulating, under these conditions, the said needle position control knob 41 to turn according to its representation R, M or L, as the case may be, as already explained hereinbefore in connection with manual adjustment of needle oscillatory position, the stitch is laterally displaced and any selected various stitch as illustrated in line 1, of FIGURE 8, can be produced. By selecting the amplitude adjusting cam 49 in the similar way by knob 75, any one of stitch form R, M, L, as illustrated in line 2 can be also produced.
Next, effects obtainable by the combination of the aforementioned automatic amplitude adjustment with the automatic needle position adjustment by means of the needle position adjusting cam illustrated in representations 48 in FIGURE 8 will be described in detail herein'below.
For example, when an operator wants to get a pattern 14 represented in the line 1 by turning the said knob 75 the respective stitch patterns illustrated thereon ,the said amplitude adjusting cam 48 is operated upon correspondingly as described hereinbefore, and at the same time the supporting member 60 of cam follower 59 of the needle and stitch position adjusting cam 51 is shifted by the said related selector projection 97 of selector member 72 so that portion 123 of said cam follower 59 is brought into and kept in engagement with the peripheral surface of said cam 51. By this operation, the said operation portion 116 of the cam follower 59 acts upon the said motion receiving portion 115 of said transmitter 63 (-FIGURE 9) so as to oscillate the latter about said supporting shaft 64. Lever 69 is caused to turn about the said pivot 5 through the intermediary of said roller 68 carried on the said projection 117 of said transmitter 63.
The connecting member 6 fixed on the said pivot shaft 5 is thereby turned, thus the pivot 7 for said oscillatory member 25 mounted thereon being correspondingly and continuously shifted thereby in accordance with the pattern of cam 51.
The composite ornamental stitch pattern obtainable in this way with the combined and continuous adjustment provided by said amplitude adjusting cam 48 and said needle position adjusting cam 51 is illustrated by way of example as denoted 'by a representation 14 in FIGURE 8.
In the similar way, combined adjustment using amplitude adjusting cam 48 with needle position adjusting cam 52, a composite ornamental stitch pattern as illustrated by way of example in the same figure with a representation 15 will be produced, when the machine runs.
Various similar, but different stitch patterns can be produced with cooperation of another needle position adjusting cam 53 and the like.
It will be clear from the foregoing, that various composite stitch patterns as indicated by indicia 24, 25 in FIG. 8 can be produced by cooperation of said amplitude adjusting cam 49 with needle position adjusting cams 51, 52 selected by two axially aligned projections 97 of member 72.
Next, effects obtainable simultaneous operation of the needle position adjusting cam 55 with the single feed adjusting cam 56 will be explained in detail hereinunder.
In this case, the said cylinder 72 is rotated by manipulating the said knob 75 as in the previous manner, so that the selector cam 78 having camming portions 127, 123 and 129 shown in FIGURE 6, is turned. The related supporting member 66 is acted upon by the selector cam 78 whose portions 127, 128, 129 engage portions 122' and thus the said cam follower 59 with engageable portion 123' is operated by the feed adjusting cam 56.
In this way, the respective cam follower 59' is caused to oscillate as shown 'by a double arrow in FIGURE 6, which oscillatory motion is transmitted through said links 126 and 83, said bell crank 81, said supporting member 84, said spring plate and said supporting member to the said feed adjuster 88, thereby the feed being correspondingly adjusted in its direction, as well to the amount of feed. In accordance with the pattern of cam 56, the feed willbe forward or rearward.
The above mentioned adjustment is carried into effect simultaneously with an adjustment for rendering operative the needle position adjusting cam 55 by shifting its support 60 with the respective cam follower 59 by a selector projection 97 of selector member 72.
It is noted, that the stitch pattern illustrated with the representation 89 in FIGURE 8 is the fundamental stitch pattern in connection with said feed adjusting cam 56, being obtainable by eam 55 upon engagement of the said engagea'ble portion 127 formed on the said selector cam 7 78 with the motion-receiving end 122 of said member 60'.
Now describing the effects of the feed adjusting selector cam 78 on the above mentioned fundamental pattern 89 in detail, turning of said knob 75 according to the pattern representation 89 as illustrated in FIGURE 8, will cause the motion receiving end 122 brought into and kept in cooperative engagement with the second camming part 128 on said cam 78 (FIGURE 6), so that pivot 61 of cam follower 59 is further shifted in its position according to the configuration of said part 128 and thus the said link 126 operatively being changed in its motion.
This will modify the working condition of the feed adjusting mechanism operatively connected with said link 126 so as to produce a combined stitch modified from the fundamental stitch With the said needle position adjusting cam 55, which is operated at the same time, so that a combined ornamental stitch pattern as illustrated by way of example with a representation 89 in FIGURE 8.
When the knob 75 is turned so as to produce, for instance, a stitch pattern corresponding to the representation 89", a third camming part 129 formed, as beforedescribed, on said selector cam 78- will operate so as to further modify the operative results provided by the said feed adjusting cam 56, while the operation of the said needle oscillatory position adjusting cam 55 is effectively used simultaneously therewith. A desired third composite pattern such as illustrated by the representation 87" is thus obtained.
It will be clear from the foregoing, that in these cases the relation between the forward and rearward direction of stitching is modified according to the shape of the said selector cam 78, at the said parts 127, 128 and 129, In the last mentioned case 89" the speed of advancing stitching is rather increased relative to the reversing stitching in the case 89.
Next, formation of buttonhole stitch on the ornamental stitch sewing machine according to the invention will be explained hereinbelow: For this purpose, a special cam 50 of the amplitude adjusting cams and a specially selected one 51 of the needle position adjusting cams are employed, while specifically designed selector projections 130 and 134 formed on the said rotatable cylinder 72, as well as the aforementioned selector cam 79 are operative.
More specifically, the said operating projection 130 as illustrated in FIGURE 10, (A), is provided on the peripheral surface of the aforementioned rotational cylinder 72, corresponding to the said amplitude adjusting cam 50, and said projection 130 having three camming portions 131, 132 and 133 being so shaped and arranged to provide a /2 amplitude, full amplitude (a bar tack) and again a /2 amplitude, respectively, and the representations 1, 2 and 3, are denoted in FIGURE (A) respectively. On the other hand, the operating or camming projection 134 illustrated in FIGURE 10, (B), is equally provided on the peripheral surface of said rotational cylinder or drum 72, but, in this case, so as to cooperate with the needle position adjusting cam 51, and said projection 134 is so shaped and arranged that with the aforementioned representation 1, the needle will be positioned corresponding to the aforementioned L due to the displacement of the fulcrum 61 of the respective cam follower 59. In the similar manner, with the representations 2 and 3, the needle is positioned by cam 51 and linkage 59, 62, 65, 8, 18, 19, 26, 25 at positions corresponding to the marks M and R illustrated hereinbefore, respectively.
Next, the working or camming portion 138 provided on the aforementioned selector cam 79, corresponds to representation 1 on the said knob 75 is so shaped to give a forward feed at a fine pitch of the stitch. The intervening working or camming portion 139 is, on the other hand, so shaped as to provide a stitch without feeding motion such as Bar-Tack, while the similar portion 8 140 corresponding to representation 3 is so shaped as to produce a reverse feed at a fine pitch. The mode of operation for making a button hole will now be described more in detail hereinbelow:
At first, turn the said stitch pattern selector knob 75 until its representation 1 has brought into coincidence with the pointer not shown, the engageable portion 122 of the cam follower supporting member 60 corresponding to the aforementioned amplitude adjusting cam 50 is thereby brought into engagement with the specific camming projection 131 on the selector cam portion 130 and the respective cam follower 59 is also brought into pressure contact with the periphery of said amplitude adjusting cam 50. Thus, when the machine is running, rotation of said amplitude adjusting cam 50 is transmitted to the said transmitter 62, connecting link 65, link 3, amplitude adjusting link 17, oscillatory link 25, operating arm 23, connecting rod 20 and to the said needle bar 21 for traversely oscillating movement with a half amplitude, while by the cooperation engagement of the said motion receiving end 122 of the saidsupporting member 60 corresponding to the said adjusting cam 51 with the camming projection 135, the motion is transmitted from the said cam 51 through said cam follower 59, transmitting member 63, roller 68, operating arm 69, connecting link 6, pivot 7, oscillatory link 25, operating arm 23, connecting rod 20 and the like to the said needle bar 21 for lateral oscillation at the positions corresponding to L.
In addition to the amplitudeand needle position adjusting operations suitable for buttonhole stitching, the said selector cam 79 has been turned at the same time so as to engage a portion 138 of its peripheral surface with the engageable portion 135 of the said related cam follower 96 mounted on the eccentric pin for providing the desired advancing and finer pitch stitching. In this case, as seen from FIGURE 6, the thus realized shifting of the said cam follower 96 is transmitted through the said pivot 100 to the said connecting rod 83, which movement is further transmitted thence through the said bell crank 81, supporting member 84, spring plate 85, supporting member 90 and the like to the said feed adjuster 88 for modification of the operative mode thereof adapted for sewing the aforementioned advancing and finer stitches.
The results of the above mentioned series of operations bring, when the machine is running, the completion of one side stitching of a button-hole, as illustrated by reference numeral 1 at the lefthand side denoted L of FIG- URE 11.
Next, the said knob 75 is turned, until the representation 2 has been brought into registration with the cooperating identification mark. The said engageable portion 122 of said supporting member 60 corresponding to the said needle position adjusting cam 50, is brought into pressure contact with the said acting portion 132 on the peripheral surface of said rotatable selector cylinder or drum 72, FIGURE 10, (B), and at the same time the said engageable portions 122 of said supporting member 60 corresponding to the aforementioned amplitude adjusting cam 51 is brought into contact with the peripheral portion 136 of selector 72, and the said selector cam 79 turns with selector 72 so that portion 139 is operative to modify the operating mode of the said feed adjuster 83 to produce a nearly 0 pitch, Without any substantial feeding motion. In this manner full amplitude oscillation of the needle bar 21 at the central line denoted by M without feed (so called Bar tack) is obtained as shown by Way of example in the lower part of FIGURE 11.
Further, when the knob 75 is turned so as to bring the representation 3 into its effective position, the camming projection 133 is engaged by the cooperative end 122 of a supporting member 60 corresponding to the cam 50 to obtain /2 amplitude stitches and simultaneousl therewith the said neighboring part 137 of said rotor 72 is brought into cooperative engagement by the said engage- 9 able portion 122 of the said supporting member 60 corresponding to the said cam 51 to place the stitches on the right and further the feed adjuster 88 is operated by the said camming portion 144) of the said selector cam 79 so as to produce the desired reverse finer pitch stitching. Thus another longitudinal stitching is produced along the right hand reference line R as illustrated by way of example in FIGURE 11.
Finally, when the said knob 75 is turned back so as to bring the representation 2 thereon into its effective position, the full-amplitude and closing stitches having near pitch (so called Bar tack) as illustrated in the upper part of FIGURE 11, will be produced again and thus the desired buttonhole stitching has been completed.
It will be clear from the foregoing, that according to the invention a cam shaft adapted to be driven at a re duced speed from the main drive shaft is provided a plurality of amplitude adjusting, needle oscillatory position adjusting and feed adjusting cams, and a corresponding number of supporting members pivotally mounted on a supporting shaft. The supporting members are adapted to be acted upon by the corresponding number of projections or camming portions formed on a rotatable selector cylinder or drum, manually controlled by a knob. The thus obtained motion is transmitted through a plurality of transmission members for producing various composite stitch patterns, while at the same time the feed adjuster and the like are modified in their operation by an adjusting cam in the manner adapted for producing a buttonhole stitching.
According to this invention, the abovementioned formation of composite stitch patterns, or buttonhole stitching can be advantageously produced upon manipulation of one and the same control knob, thus providing considerable and unobvious improvements in the art to which the invention pertains.
Although substantially only one embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the foregoing specification, it is to be expressly understood that the invention is not limited thereto. It will be thus obvious that the principles of the invention may be carried into effect by means of a wide variety of specific structural embodiments, that various features be combined in different ways and that certain features may be employed to the exclusion of others. The invention is accordingly to be understood as embracing all forms of apparatus falling within the scope of the appended claims.
