(Cl. 29-238) This invention relates to improvements in plumbers tools, and more particularly to tools for setting lavatories, sinks, or other receptacles so that the upper face of the supporting flange thereof will lie in the same plane as the supporting table top, cabinet top, or the like.
Heretofore the setting of lavatories, sinks, or other receptacles, so that the top of the lavatory, sink, or other receptacle was in the same plane as the top of the table support- Then the workman may conveniently fasten the necessary securing clamps to the peripheral mounting mold so that the clamp will engage the under side of the table top or cabinet top on which the lavatory or sink is mounted, whereupon, the tool can then be removed and the necessary plumbing connections to the lavatory or sink may be made.
An object of this invention is-to provide a tool which may be used to bind the mounting mold of a lavatory or sink to the upper surface of a lavatory or sink in such I manner as to enable a workman, without assistance, to place the lavatory or sink through a previously prepared opening in a table top or cabinet top to enablethe -in stallation of the lavatory or sink therein by a single workman.
Another object of the invention is to providea tool which may be quickly attached to or. detached from a lavatory or. sink to hold a mounting mold in place while the lavatory or sink is installed within a prepared opening within the plane table top, cabinet top, or the like.
Still another object of the inventionis to provide a tool which is simple in construction, whichis easy toattach and detach from a lavatory or sink, and which is low in the cost of manufacture.
With these objects in mind and others which will become manifest as the description proceeds, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate like parts in the several views thereof, in which:

Operation of the first form of the invention In the setting of lavatories, sinks, or any receptacle, as indicated at 4, .within an opening 2 in a table top, cabinet top, or other plane surface 1, difficulty is often experienced in holding the receptacle 4 at the correct position within the opening 2, however, with the present tool, the peripheral mold 10 supports the lavatory, sink, or receptacle 4 within the opening 2, which peripheral mold 10" is usually known by such trade names as Hudee rim, Prodee rim, or Ardee rim. The present tool will enable the receptacle 4 to be used with any of these n'ms in such manner as to enable a workman, without an assistant, to accurately and expeditiously set the receptacle 4 within the opening 2 at the proper place so that the inwardly extending flange on the peripheral mold 10 may be bindingly engaged by channel 20 against the outturned rim 18 of the receptacle 4. The rod 22 is inserted through apertured member 32, through slot 24, and through drain pipe 26, until the rod 22 extends outward through the drain pipe 26 a sufiicient distance to enable the quickly attachable, longitudinally apertured coupling element 28 to be slid onto the lower end of rod 22, whereupon the movable, apertured dog 40 is released to cause compression spring 44 to move the apertured dog 46 into position, as shown in FIG. 4, which causes the teeth 42 of movable, apertured dog 40 to engage the surface of rod 22, whereupon, by rotating crank 38 in one direction, the screw threaded sleeve 34 will move downward on screw threaded rod 22 to engage apertured member 32 within channel 20, whereupon, 'by tightening the channel 20 into binding engagement with the peripheral mold 10, the peripheral mold 10 will be caught in binding engagement between the outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4 and the lower face of channel 20, whereupon the unit, comprising the receptacle 4 and the entire tool assembly, designated generally by the numeral 3, including the peripheral mold 10, may be lifted from a convenient place of assembly and placed within the opening 2 of the table top, cabinet top 1, or the like.
Since the under faces of peripheral mold 10 are coplanar, the upper face 6 of the receptacle 4 will be positioned in the same plane as the upper surface 8 of the table top or cabinet top 1, or the like. With the reeeptacle 4 positioned in the opening 2 in this manner, the workman can then go beneath the table or cabinet and engage hooks 17 of clamps 16 with hook 14 of peripheral mold 10. With a bolt 46 threadably engaging a portion of each clamp 16, the screw threaded bolt 46 is screwed into binding engagement with the lower surface of outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4, and with the downwardly extending hook 14 on stem 12 engaged with hooks 17 to form a fulcrum, the outer ends of the clamps 16 will bindingly engage the lower surface of the table top, cabinet top 1, or the like, to hold the peripheral mold 10 against movement. With the desired number of these clamps 16 installed around the peripheral mold 10 in this manner, the receptacle 4 is held in secure relation with respect to the table top or cabinet top 1, or the like.
Second form of the invention The form of the invention as shown in FIGS. through 8 utilizes the resiliency of a tension coil spring 51 to hold a channel 52 of the tool in binding engagement with the peripheral mold when the tool is assembled in place, however, the spring 51 is of greater strength than the weight of the lavatory or sink forming the receptacle 4 which is being set. The spring 51 is attached at one end to linkage 54, the lowermost part of which linkage 54 has a cross bar 56 attached thereto, which cross bar 56 is sufficiently narrow to pass through drain pipe 26, when positioned in the manner as shown in FIG. 7, and which is of sulficient length, when the cross bar 56 is passed through the drain pipe 26, to extend thereacross to prevent the upward movement of linkage 54 and spring 51 when an upward pull is exerted thereon. Links of chain 55 are attached to the upper end of spring 51 and are of a size to pass through keyhole apertures 58 within channel 52 when in one position, however, when moved into the narrow portion of the keyhole apertures 58, the chain links immediately above the keyhole apertures 58 will rest upon the upper surface of the metal of the channel 52, as will best be seen in FIGS. 5, 6, and 8.
With the peripheral mold 10 positioned around the receptacle 4 in the manner set out above for the first form of the invention, the channel 52 is positioned so that a portion of the peripheral mold 10 will overlie a portion of the outturned rim 18 of the receptacle 4, and with the linkage 54 extending through the drain pipe 26in such manner as to allow cross bar 56 to pass therethrough, the cross bar 56 will then extend transversely across the lower face of the drain pipe 26, as shown in FIG. 5. Whereupon, the links' of chain 55 are grasped by hand and moved upward through the larger portion of one of the keyhole apertures 58, and by maintaining the channel 52 pressed downward against peripheral mold 10, the chain 55 is moved laterally from the position within the enlarged portion of the keyhole apertures 58 into the slotted portion 59 and the tension on the chain 55 is released, which will cause the spring 51 to bindingly engage the lower surface of channel 52 with the upper surface of peripheral mold 10, which will hold the peripheral mold 10 in engaged relation between the upper face of the outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4 and the lower face of channel 52. v
This assembly operation may be performed at any convenient location, and when the peripheral mold 10 is held in binding relation with receptacle 4, the entire unit, comprising the receptacle 4, the tool designated generally at 50, and the peripheral mold 10, is placed within the opening 2 within the table top or cabinet top 1 until the coplanar faces on the under side of peripheral mold 10 come to rest on the upper surface 8 of table top or cabinet top 1. With the receptacle 4 positioned in this manner, the clamps 16 are secured in place in the manner as set forth in the above form of the invention.
With the clamps 16 secured in place at the desired intervals around the receptacle 4, the chain 55 is pulled against tension of spring 51 until links of chain 55 can be moved from slotted portion 59 into the enlarged portion of keyhole apertures 58 and pressure is released to enable the removal of the chain 55 from keyhole apertures 58 and from the drain pipe 26.
Third form of the invention The form of the invention as shown in FIG. 9 is to be used -for setting a receptacle, as indicated at 4, in the aforementioned forms of the invention, however, the present form of the invention is designated generally by the numeral 70 and utilizes a transversely apertured rod 71, which rod 71 extends through an apertured channel 72, the aperture in which channel 72 is elongated, as indicated at 74. A leaf spring 76 is fitted within channel 72 in position to abridge aperture 74. A bifurcated portion 78 of rod 71 extends upward through the aperture 74 and through slit portions 80 in leaf spring 76.
An eccentric, cam like member 82 is positioned on a finger 34 of the leaf spring 76, and a transverse aperture is formed through eccentric, cam like member 82 to receive a pin 86 through apertures within the upper end of the bifurcated portions 73 of rod 71 in such manner as to position the eccentric, cam like member 82 between the bifurcated portion 78 of rod 71.
The eccentric, cam like member 82 has an outwardly extending handle 88 thereon, and when the handle 88 is in one position, no tension will be applied to leaf spring 76, however, with a washer 90 surrounding rod 71. and with a pin 92 positioned through one of the holes 94 in such manner that the washer 90 will be in abutting relation with the lower end of drain pipe 26, the handle 88 may be moved from a position of less tensioning on rod 71 to a position of greater tensioning, whereupon with the peripheral mold positioned on outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4, the receptacle 4 will be drawn upward to bindingly engage the peripheral mold 10 intermediate the outturned rim 18 and the channel 52, which will hold the unit, comprising the receptacle 4, the tool 70, and the peripheral mold 10, to enable the receptacle 4 to be inserted through an opening, such as opening 2, in table top or cabinet top 1 until the outwardly extending portion of the lower face of the peripheral mold 10 will rest on the surface 8 of table top or cabinet top 1 to enable clamps 16 to be attached to the hook 14 on the peripheral mold 10 in the manner set out for the above mentioned form of invention.
Upon rotating the eccentric, cam like member 82 through an are by moving handle 88 approximately 180 degrees, the tension on the leaf spring 76 will be released to enable the removal of pin 92 from one of the holes 94,
Fourth form of the invention The fourth form of the invention is designated generally by the numeral 100 and has a rod 101 which extends through a slotted channel 102. The slot in channel 102 is designated by the numeral 104. A member 106 has an aperture therein, which aperture is adapted to register with the slot 104 in channel 102. The slot 104 enables the rod 101 to :be moved longitudinally along the channel 102 to enable adjustment of channel 102 in proper relation to the drain pipe 26, especially when the lavatory, sink, or receptacle 4 is being mounted in a close place, such as a corner of a room.
The rod 101 has a head 108 thereon. A washer 110 may he slid into abutting relation with the head 108 of rod 101 to provide proper support for the upper end of a helical spring 112. The lower end of helical spring 112 seats on apertured member 106 within channel 102 so as formed transversely through the rod 101 to receive a transverse pin 116 therethrough. A washer 118 may be positioned on rod 101 after the rod 101 has been inserted through the drain pipe 26 prior to the insertion of pin 116 through transverse apertures 114.
The present form of the invention may be readily and easily installed to hold a peripheral mold 10 on the outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4 by placing the peripheral mold 10 around the outturned rim 18 so that the inturned flange of peripheral mold 10 may be secured in binding relation between the upper face 6 of the outturned rim 18 and the lower face of channel 102. With the channel 102 positioned in this manner, a rod 101 is moved downward through drain pipe 26 until the helical spring 112 is compressed to the desired degree, whereupon the washer 118 is slid over the lower end of rod 101 and the transverse pin 116 is passed through an aperture below the washer 118, whereupon pressure is released from head 108 of rod 101 so as to' enable the channel 102 to hold the peripheral mold 10 binding engagement with the upper surface of outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4. The above operation may be performed by one man at any easily accessible place, whereupon, with the spring holding the channel 102 in binding relation with the outturned rim 18, the receptacle 4, peripheral mold 10, and the holding tool, designated generally by the numeral 100, can be moved so that the receptacle 4 will pass 'whereupon the tool 70 may be removed from the drain through a previously prepared opening 2 within the table top or cabinet top 1 so that the outturned rim 18 of the peripheral mold 10 will seat on the upper surface 8 of the table top or cabinet top 1, which will align the upper plane face 6 of outturned rim 18 with the upper plane surface 8 of table top or cabinet top 1. With the helical spring 112 having a greater tension thereon than the weight of the receptacle 4, the receptacle 4 will be suspended in the opening 2 until such time that hooks 17 of clamps 16 may be used to complementary engage hook 14 on the downwardly extending stem 12 of peripheral mold 10. The outwardly extending portions of clamps 16 will rest upon the underside of table top or cabinet top 1, and a screw threaded bolt 46 is screw threaded into binding engagement with the lower face of outturned rim 18 of receptacle 4 until sufficient pressure is applied through the complementary hook 14 on downwardly extending stem 12 of the peripheral mold 10 and hooks 17 on clamps 16 to support the receptable 4 within the opening 2.
While the receptacle 4 is supported in the opening 2, various clamps 16 are secured around the peripheral mold 10 so as to prevent movement of the receptacle 4. With the receptable 4 secured in place, the head 103 of rod 101 may be depressed until the helical spring 112 is compressed to allow the removal of transverse pin 116 and washer 118, whereupon the channel 102 and rod 101 may be removed from the receptacle 4.
Having thus clearly shown and described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent isi In a tool for supporting a flush type receptacle, having an attachable T-shaped, peripheral mold fitted thereon, within an opening in a plane surface, which receptacle has a hole formed in a side thereof;
(a) an apertured transverse support member adapted to extend across the receptacle and across at least a portion of the T-shaped peripheral mold to bindingly engage the attachable, T-shaped, peripheral mold with the upper face of the receptacle to be supported in the opening,
(b) an elongated member extending from said transverse support member and adapted to pass through the hole in a side of said receptacle,
(1) a portion of said elongated member being a chain,
(2) another portion of said elongated member being a coiled, tension spring which is positioned intermediate the length of said chain, to form a resilient actuator means within the length of said elongated member to selectively exert tension on said elongated member in excess of the weight of the receptacle,
(3) means on said elongated member opposite said transverse support member to engage the side of the receptacle surrounding the hole formed therein,
(c) said apertures in said transverse support member being of keyhole shape to enable said chain to be selectively engaged therein to arrest movement of said chain in one direction.
