Description
MPUEHS. PHUYO-UTNOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D4 Q NITED STATES PATENT onirica.
MORTON B. HILL,O]3` FAIRFIELD, OHIO.
FIRE-LADDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 3,245, dated September 1, 1843.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, MoRToN B. HILL, of Fairfield, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful machine for preserving life and property in case of fire originating` in the lower part of large buildings, called Hills life-preserver or ladder, which is described as follows, reference being had to the annexed draw ings of the same, making' part of this specication.
Figure l is a vertical section of the machine.
This machine consists of a pole A, from to 40 feet long 6 inches diameter at butt, and 4 in diameter at top, having secured at its top, an axletree and two wheels B, for conducting it freely up the side of the building-and two bearded prongs O, for fastening' it to the buildingin any desired position. A mortise is made in the pole, immediately below the axletree, in which a pulley D is placed, the axle of which, turns in boxes secured to the sides of the mortise. Another mort-ise is made in the pole near the lower end, or butt, in which is arranged a pulley G, around which is passed a rope or chain E. This rope extends from pulley G, to another pulley F, and after passing' around it once, extends to a pulley D passing over the same, and down the opposite side of the pole, and is fastened to a circular band L, loosely surrounding'` the poleh small friction rollers R being secured to the band L to prevent it in its up and down movement from touchingthe timber A.
A chair I of anydesired form, issuspended to the circular band L by means of chains or rods H, in which the person, or persons, to be raised, or lowered, sit. A grapple-hook K, is attached to said chair, by which it can be held stationary at any desired point.
The rope E attached to the circular band, may, after being' passed over the pulleys D, F and G be passed over a pulley J, secured to the top of the pole, and extend thence to the chair, by which arrangement the person in the chair may by his own exertions raise and lower himself.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention and which Idesire to secure by Letters Patent isi The combination and arrangement of the several parts of the before described machine for preserving` life and property in case of fire, and for other purposes-that is to say I claim the combination of the pole A, wheels B, pulleys F, G, D, rope or chain E, ring L, with the suspended chair I in the manner, and for the' purpose herein set forth.
MORTON B. HILL.
