Description
M. J AGOBSEN. ADJUSTABLE PATTERN FOR DRAPTING GARMENTS. No. 324,472.
Patented Aug N. PETERS, Photo-Lithographer, Washinglom D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
MARTHA JAGOBSEN, OF LYQN S, IOWVA.
ADJUSTABLE PATTERN FOR DRAFTING GARMENTS.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 324,472, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed November 24, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA JAOOBSEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lyons city, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pattern-Plates for Drafting Garments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw lugs.
My invention relates to adjustable patterns for cutting garments; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of such patterns, whereby the pattern may be adjusted to the desired size and proportions, and the cloth for the garment readily marked and cut in the required size and form, thus dispensing with mathematical calculations and saving much time.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan of an adjustable pattern for the front part of a garment having my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a pattern for the back part, and Fig. 3 a pattern for the side part.
- The same letters refer to like parts in the several figures.
The pattern for the front and underarm portions of the garment is constructed in parts A, B, O, and D, as shown in Fig. 1. The pattern for the back part of the garment (shown in Fig. 2) is also constructed in parts E F for the top and G H for the bottom portions.
In Fig. 3 is shown the pattern for the side part of the garment, made in parts I and K.
The parts of each pattern are adj ustably connected together by means of thumb-screws 0, arranged in vertical, horizontal, and in clined guides or slots at, a, and a The guides a (shown in Fig. 2) are in clined, as shown, in order to give the proper pitch to the shoulder of the back.
Extensions of the patterns are indicated by dotted lines .90 in the several figures.
In practice, first take with atape the shoul: der and bust-chest measure. Then take the bust-measure under the arm. Then measure (No model.)
the length of waist from neck corner 8, Fig. 1, down to the line indicated by 1;. Then measure around the waist and divide the length of this waist measurement into three equal parts, one part being allowed for the back and the other two for the two parts of the front, and
then add six inches to the measurement ofeach' of the front parts, which allows for the darts L. For the width of the back take the measure under the arm-scye on the bust-measure line o in Fig. 1 and o in Fig. 2. Now adjust the parts A, B, O, and D to the tapemeasure for the front, and the parts E F for the back, and parts I K for the side. Tighten the thumb screws and cutthe cloth for the garment by the pattern as adjusted. If the measurements are carefully taken, the fit will be perfect. I
The device is preferably constructed of tin; but any suitable material may be used.
I am aware of the patents numbered 70,621,
109,076, 158,191, 213,436, and 215,613 for charts and devices for measuring and cutting garments, which charts are different from mine in their curves, points, lines, figures, and let ters indicating the required measurements.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In adj ustable patterns for drafting garments, the combination of the front and under armplates, AB C D, having the vertical and horizontal slots a a, the measuring-point s, and the line 1), the back plates, E F G H, provided with the vertical and inclined slots a a and the measuring-line o, and the side plates,I K, having the inclined slot a, the said plates being adjustably connected together by means of set-screws in the slots, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTHA JACOBSEN.
