ROTARY ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,993 dated August 11 1885.
Application filed August 23, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ADNA WILDERN, of the village of Vienna, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotary Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In my improved rotary engine I employ two cylindrical cores 'or rollers fitted in contact and forming abutments. To each of these cores or rollers a piston is rigidly attached. Said pistons pass each other by means of a recess in each of the said cores or rollers. Steam is admitted through ports in heads of cylinder, and passes through grooves in ends of one roller to piston, and exhausts in a simi lar manner through grooves in ends of opposite roller, and then through ports in heads of cylinder, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the engine in the plane of the axis, and Fig. 2 is a side view with a side of the case removed.
The case A of the engine is of the form of two intersecting hollow cylinders, closed at their ends by heads B B. O G are solid rollers or cylindrical cores, formed with or rigidly fixed on shafts a a,that pass through boxes I) b on heads B. On the shaft of one roller is a balance or band wheel, 1), and the rollers are geared for simultaneous movement by the spur-wheels E E. The rollers or cylindrical cores 0 are sustained in contact with each other and permitted to be set up toward each other,in case of wear, by half-boxes d and set-screws e, and they are of smaller diameter than the cylinder or outer case, A, so as to form steamways. To each roller 0 is rigidly attached a piston, f, bearing against the inner surface of the case, and they are recessed at g, next to the pistons f, so that in the rotation of the rollers the piston on one roller enters the recess in the other, and they thus pass without obstruction.
For admitting steam the heads B are formed with ports opening at the inside of the case, and having steam-pipes z" connected thereto. The upper cylindrical core or roller is made with grooves in its ends, for conducting the steam to its recess 9 and into the steamway (No model.)
during about half the rotation. The lower roller has similar grooves, l, in its ends, for permitting exhaust of the steam to the passages in ports in heads B, connecting to pipes m. These grooves L are continuous.
From the position, as shown, the rollers turn in the direction of the arrows, and as soon as the grooves 70 coincide with ports in heads B the steam enters, and, pressing between the pistons f and the contact point of the rollers, forces both rollers around. After the grooves it pass the ports, steam acts by expansion until the pistons interlock and pass to the positions shown, and the steam then escapes by the grooves l. The movement of the balancewheel carries the rollers forward while the pistons are passing.
These engines may be constructed so as to work reversible by simply changing the course of the steam, which would necessitate the use of two ports in each end of each cylinder, which would be arranged in such a manner that the port in one cylinder would take steam, while the other port in the opposite cylinder .would permit the exhaust-steam to escape.
From the instant the steam is introduced to the cylinder D its full power is exerted on both the pistons until the engine commences to exhaust, and the steam may be cut oif at any point desired, according to the arrangement of the ports, the remainder of the stroke being completed by the expansion of the steam.
'Havin g thus described. my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of case A, having steam- 9c passages in its heads, and rollers 0, formed with pistons f and grooves g, and having passages lcl in their ends, substantially as described, for operation as specified.
2. In a rotary engine, the combination,with 9 5 the case A and the shafts a, carrying the cylindric cores, of the half-boxes d, adjustable upon the said shafts by adjusting or set screws 6, inserted through boxes of the heads of the case A, and bearing upon said half-boxes, 1c substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
