SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,919, dated August 11, 1885.
Application filed September 27, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI Dnso, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, WVilliams county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Powers and finding Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specitica tion.
This invention relates to improvements inhorse-powers and winding mechanism for elevating, hoisting, and hauling machinery and other purposes; and the invention consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, in which Figure l isaplan view of a horse-power and power transmitting mechanism constructed according to my invention. Fig. '2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of thepawlshifting device. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the double guide-pulley. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the brake.
The frame of the horse-power and winding or power-transmitting mechanism is designated by the reference-letter K. In this frame s mounted a horizontal winding-drum, I, which is constructed with a ratchet-wheel, I, at one end, and is provided with a brake, 1
The shaft J of the drum I is geared to a horse power, in the manner'hereinafter set forth, and from the drum a cable, b b, is conducted to the elevator or other apparatus to be raised or operated upon. The cable passes over the guidepulley L, which is mounted on a shaft, K, fitted in brackets Z Z, attached to and projecting from the frame K, as is seen in Fig. 1, and it also passes over two other pulleys, E E, as seen in Fig. 2. Pawls M M are located upon either side of the ratchet-wheel I, and adapted to hold the winding-drum in any given position, and thereby hold the elevator or other object at any desired point. A drive or master wheel, N, is mounted upon a perpendicular shaft having a hearing at the top'upon the frame K and at the base in a yoke, N.

] ions are constructed to engage with the sliding clutches P and P, also mounted upon said shaft with intervening splines or keys, the construction being such that they may be thrown into alternate engagement with either of said pinions or out of engagement with both. Theseclutches are provided with extended arms 19 and 1), said arms being engaged with an operating-shaft, Q, by means of set-screws, so that the clutches may be located upon the shaft J in any desired position. I prefer to arrange the location of the clutches upon the shaft and said sliding bar in its relation to the pawls in such a manner that the clutches may be thrown out of engagement with the pinions when said lever is thrown partially over, but still leaving the pawl in engagement with the ratchet-wheel until the lever is thrown back to the extent of its stroke. This construction and arrangement of the clutches and the sliding bar which operates the pawl enables me to hold the elevators at any desired pointas, for instance, to load or 'unload-while the clutches being out of engagement with either pinion, the horse may continue to travel, and yet the clutches be thrown into engagement with the pinions at any desired moment, thus saving time that It indicates a sliding cam engaged in the,

I prefer to locate traversewheels or anti-friction rollers X, so as to engage upon the top of the driving-wheel to hold it firmly in engagement with the pinions. This may be done in any suitable manner-as, for instance, the boxings X and X of the shaft may be extended so as to form suitable supports for said traverse-wheels.
Y is the brake-operating bar, provided with a bell-crank lever, Y, upon its outer end, said crank engaged with a bar, Y, having an operating-lever, Y The bellcrank lever is preferably weighted, as shown, so as to automatically throw the brake out of engagement with the sliding drum when pressure is relieved from the lever Y.

y" indicates the bearing for the inner end of the brake-opcrating bar Y. The inner end of this bar is ecceutrically connected with said sliding head, the construction being such that as said bar is operated by its lever the brake will be thrown into or out of engagement with the winding-drum.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, in empower-transmitting mechanism, of a shaft, pinions loose thereon, a master-wheel engaging the pinions, clutches mounted on said shaft for engaging and disengaging the pinions, a longitudinally-sliding shaft, and arms rigidly secured to the sliding shaft and engaging the clutches, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a shaft, pinions loose thereon, a master-wheel engaging the pinions, clutches mounted on said shaft for engaging and disengaging the pinions, a longitudinallysliding shaft, extended arms rigidly secured to the latter and acting on the clutches, acam engaging the sliding shaft, and a lever for operating the cam to move the shaft and operate the clutches, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a Winding-drum provided with a ratchet-wheel mounted upon a shaft, of pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, clutches mounted upon said shaft and adapted to be thrown into or out of engagement with said pinions, a driving-wheel to engage with said pinions, pawls to engage with said ratcl1et-wheel, and mechanism, substantially such as described, for operating said clutches and said pawls.
4. The combination, with a winding-drum provided with a ratchet-wheel and mounted upon a shaft, of pawls to engage upon either side with said wheel, pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, clutches mounted upon said shaft and adapted to engage with said pinions alternately and. to be disengaged therefrom, means, substantially such as described, connected with said clutches and adapted to operate said pawls, and a driving-wheel to mesh with said pinions, the construction being such that said clutches may be thrown alternately into engagement with said pinions and out of engagement with both, and the pawls to be operated correspondingly therewith, substantiall y as and for the purpose described.
5. The eombination,with a winding-drum having a ratchetwheel mounted upon ashaft, of pawls adapted to engage with said wheel, pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, a driving-wheel adapted to mesh with said pinions, clutches mounted upon said shaft adapted to engage alternately with said pinions and to be disengaged therefrom,said clutches connected with an operating-shaft, and mechanism connected with said shaft adapted to engage alternately with said pawls, substantially as described.
6. The combination, with a Winding-drum having a ratchet-wheel mounted upon a shaft, of pawls adapted to engage with said wheel, pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, a driving-wheel adapted to mesh with said pinions, clutches mounted upon said shaft adapted to engage alternately with said pinions and to be disengaged therefrom, an operating-bar connected with said clutches, a slide connected with said shaft and adapted to engage alternately with said pawls as said shaftis reciprocated, and mechanism for reciprocating said shaft, substantially as described.
7. The combination, with a winding-drum, of a guided and sliding brake having a head, the rocking-bar having one end eccentrically connected directly with the head to slide the brake to and from the drum, a weighted lever at the other end of the rocking bar, and a lever for operating the bar, substantially as described.
8. The combination, with a Windingdrum, of a guided and sliding brake having a head provided with a slot, the rocking bar having one end eccentrically engaging the slot in the brake-head, and a lever for rocking the bar, substantially as described.
9. The combination, with a windingdrum provided with a ratchet-wheel mounted upon a shaft, of pawls adapted to engage with said wheel, pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, a driving-wheel to engage with said pinions, clutches mounted upon said shaft adapted to engage alternately with said pinions and to be disengaged therefrom, and an operatingshaft connected with said clutches and provided. with means, substantially such as described, to alternately operate said pawls, said shaft connected with an operating-lever to reciprocate the same, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. The combination, with a hoisting-drum having elevator or hauling cables wound thereon in opposite directions, provided with ratchet mechanism and mounted upon a shaft, of pinions loosely mounted upon said shaft, a driving-wheel to engage with said pinions,
clutches to engage alternately with said pinions and to be disengaged therefrom, and mechanism, substantially such as described, to operate said clutches and said ratchet mechanism, the construction being such that the drum may be turned alternately in opposite directions while the driving-wheel is continuously operated in the same direction, substantially as described.
11. The combination of the shaft J,winding or rope drum 1, master-wheel N, bevel gearwheels 0 and O, sliding clutches P and 1?, shaft Q, sliding cam R, roller q, and sliding bar T, with the frame K and sweep U, substantially as described.
12. The combination of the shaft 3 having the cam 3 and weighted arm a and the sliding brake-shoe z, with the winding or rope drum having a rim adapt-ed to engage with the brake-shoe, substantially as described.
